Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
A multi-technology high performance computing system based on the Open Parallel Architecture Design Specification (OPADS) platform is being evaluated for use as a graphics engine for spherical scene projection. This system is designed to make available the massive quantities of real-time processing power needed to support complete real time scene generation and projection of complex dynamical maneuvers for applications such as scientific visualization and three dimensional database creation and interaction. A comparison is also provided between head mounted projection systems and walk-in spherical scene projection systems.
Bayesian Defeat Of Camouflage, Rufus H. Cofer
Bayesian Defeat Of Camouflage, Rufus H. Cofer
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
A new technique is shown for refining and reducing incoming camouflage data based upon the Bayesian paradigm. Innovation is displayed in use of a statistical conditioning sequence that avoids the need to form target features from the data. The result is a simplified and more accurate probabilistic indication of actual target presence. This probabilistic indication can then be incorporated into a variety of target detection scenarios or, alternately, to form the basis of a theoretically optimal Bayesian target detector. Numeric simulation is presented to show the effectiveness of the technique against simulated camouflage
Explanation Mode For Bayesian Automatic Object Recognition, Thomas L. Hazlett, Rufus H. Cofer, Harold K. Brown
Explanation Mode For Bayesian Automatic Object Recognition, Thomas L. Hazlett, Rufus H. Cofer, Harold K. Brown
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
One of the more useful techniques to emerge from AI is the provision of an explanation modality used by the researcher to understand and subsequently tune the reasoning of an expert system. Such a capability, missing in the arena of statistical object recognition, is not that difficult to provide. Long standing results show that the paradigm of Bayesian object recognition is truly optimal in a minimum probability of error sense. To a large degree, the Bayesian paradigm achieves optimality through adroit fusion of a wide range of lower informational data sources to give a higher quality decision - a very …
The Management Of Replicated Data, Hsueh-Chi Shih, C. Y. Ho, S. Alptekin
The Management Of Replicated Data, Hsueh-Chi Shih, C. Y. Ho, S. Alptekin
Computer Science Technical Reports
Data replication, which has the benefits of improving system availability and read performance, proved to be indispensable to many database applications. In a replicated database, the one-copy serializability of transaction executions can be ensured by employing a replica control mechanism on top of the traditional concurrency control mechanism. This work contains two replica control algorithms and a read-only transaction processing algorithm. Both replica control algorithms handle multiple site, communication and partitioning failures. The replica control algorithms achieve read operation efficiency by always translating a logical read operation into one local physical read operation and by taking advantage of the locality …
Methanotrophic Bacteria For Nutrient Removal From Wastewater: Attached Film System, William J. Jewell, Yarrow M. Nelson, Mark S. Wilson
Methanotrophic Bacteria For Nutrient Removal From Wastewater: Attached Film System, William J. Jewell, Yarrow M. Nelson, Mark S. Wilson
Civil and Environmental Engineering
It was hypothesized that nutrient removal from wastewater could be achieved by using methane oxidizing bacteria (methanotrophs). Because methane is inexpensive. it can be used as an energy source to encourage bacterial growth to assimilate nitrogen and phosphorus and other trace elements. This initial feasibility study used synthetic nutrient mixtures and secondary sewage effluent as feed to a laboratory-scale methanotrophic attached-film expanded bed (MAFEB) reactor operated at 35°C and 20°C. The MAFEB system operated successfully at low nutrient concentrations under a variety of nutrient-limited conditions. Using a synthetic nutrient mixture with a nitrogen:phosphorus feed ratio (w/w) …

Field Calibration Of A Transient Model For Broiler Misting, Richard S. Gates, Douglas G. Overhults, Robert W. Bottcher, Shu Hui Zhang
Field Calibration Of A Transient Model For Broiler Misting, Richard S. Gates, Douglas G. Overhults, Robert W. Bottcher, Shu Hui Zhang
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
A transient model to predict temperature within a tunnel ventilated broiler house during misting is developed. The model is calibrated with field data to obtain steady-state constants; transient predictions are compared to measured temperatures during cyclic misting for two different size birds. Measured temperatures during cyclic misting are shown to swing between steady-state asymptotes predicted from the model. Transient response of the model was faster than measured temperature data, in part due to temperature sensor dynamic response. The model predicts the length-wise temperature profile within the building during misting, and can be used to investigate alternate misting strategies and designs. …
Co-Channel Speaker Separation, Thomas S. Andrews
Co-Channel Speaker Separation, Thomas S. Andrews
Theses and Dissertations
In the co-channel speaker separation problem, the goal is to recover two separate speech signals from a monaural channel which contains the sum of the two speech signals. A new methodology is developed that if given that a segment of co-channel speech is separated into a stronger and weaker segment, the correct assignment of these separated segments to the appropriate talker can be made using a Linear Predictive Coding (LPC) based minimum-prediction residual computation. The uniqueness of the developed technique is that no a priori information is required of the co-channel speech signal. The information needed to appropriately assign these …

Estimating The Operating And Support Cost Difference Between Royal Australian Air Force C-130e And C-130h Hercules Aircraft, Terrence J. Sidey
Theses and Dissertations
This research investigated the operating and support cost (O & S cost) of Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) C-130E and C-130H aircraft. The purpose was twofold: to provide information about the relative O & S cost of the RAAF's old and "new" C-130 aircraft; and to increase knowledge and understanding of aircraft O & S costing within the RAAF. Preliminary research indicated that RAAF O & S costing was rudimentary and that suitable O & S data would be difficult to obtain. Accordingly, an analogous O & S cost system -- the U.S. Air Force (USAF) SABLE cost model and …
Review Of Factors Impacting Warranty Cost-Benefit Analysis For The Sensor Fuzed Weapon System, Donna E. Kehrt
Review Of Factors Impacting Warranty Cost-Benefit Analysis For The Sensor Fuzed Weapon System, Donna E. Kehrt
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research effort was to identify factor that affect the warranty cost-benefit analysis for the Sensor Fuzed Weapon (SFW) system since an essential performance requirement (EPR) warranty waiver was under consideration. Defense funding has become scarce, and the limited dollars must be spent wisely. A cost-benefit analysis should provide a relevant projection of cost-effectiveness based on the best available data. The SFW and other dormant weapon systems present difficulties in determining cost- effectiveness because the systems most probably will be non-operating, non- reusable, and non-restorable. Three recommendations were made, relevant to dormant weapon systems, that pertained to …

An Analysis Of Strategic Planning To Support The United States Special Operations Forces' C3 Interoperability, George M. Pierce Ii
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to analyze the strategic plans of USSOCOM to determine its role in resolving the C3 interoperability issues. A model using strategic controls and Theory of Constraints was used as a standard to evaluate USSOCOM's management plans. A literature search revealed that hardware and new technology were the primary concerns of previous studies. However, the literature did not address whether the lack of a formal strategy contributed to the C3 interoperability problems. Therefore, the determination was to adopt a fresh approach to the C3 interoperability issues and analyze the strategic process. The data analysis of …
The Development Of An Expert System For Hazardous Cargo Compatibility, Douglas A. Furst, Ronald E. Smith
The Development Of An Expert System For Hazardous Cargo Compatibility, Douglas A. Furst, Ronald E. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
This research demonstrates the application of expert system technology to automate the aircraft load selection process performed when transporting hazardous cargo. The resulting computer program is an expert system named HAZARD. This system incorporates the regulations governing hazardous cargo compatibility with the heuristics used by experts in loadplanning operations. The impetus to develop such a system is the January 1993 conversion of regulation guidelines for hazardous cargo classification and management in Air Force Regulation 71-4, to a universal international standard. The Cargo Operations Division of Headquarters Air Mobility Command at Scott AFB, was concerned that this change in procedures and …
Issues Affecting Acquisition Strategies For Remedial Action Projects At Installation Restoration Program Sites, John E. Keoshian, William A. Kolakowski
Issues Affecting Acquisition Strategies For Remedial Action Projects At Installation Restoration Program Sites, John E. Keoshian, William A. Kolakowski
Theses and Dissertations
Most, if not all, of Air Force IRP restoration work is accomplished through contracting avenues. The present system of cleanup and close out of these IRP sites is inefficient, time consuming, and costly. Expedient cleanup of contaminated sites will depend in large part upon on how effectively the USAF manages its restoration contracts. Difficulties are encountered due to differences in interpretation and/or vagueness of contracting and environmental information by all parties involved. Additionally, numerous conflicts arise when different agencies apply different acquisition strategies to similar remedial actions. To compound the problem, there are few definitions and little guidance from the …

Prioritizing Pollution Prevention Projects Using The Displaced Ideal Model For The Allocation Of Limited Funds, Scott W. Mcpherson, Debra J. Watts
Theses and Dissertations
This research developed a model to prioritize pollution prevention projects for the distribution of limited financial resources. This model was designed for use at the major command (MAJCOM) level. Each MAJCOM is allowed to select the attributes believed to be most appropriate for evaluating pollution prevention projects. The system also allows the flexibility for MAJCOMs to weight the attributes in accordance with requirements. The model uses "fuzzy logic" and the Displaced Ideal Model (DIM) to prioritize projects that currently do not have an imminent compliance deadline, but are important due to potential noncompliance with future regulations. These projects also are …

An Analysis Of The Air Force Enlisted Performance Feedback System, Dee J. Jackson, Mark A. Ward
An Analysis Of The Air Force Enlisted Performance Feedback System, Dee J. Jackson, Mark A. Ward
Theses and Dissertations
This research evaluated the effectiveness of the enlisted evaluation performance feedback system. The Air Force created the feedback system because many airmen, especially those in lower ranks, did not know or did not understand their duties. Therefore, for the purpose of this study, effectiveness was defined as the degree to which the Air Force model mimicked the ideal feedback model as formulated by the researcher's analysis of the literature. The researchers found evidence that the new Air Force feedback system is an improvement over the old design. Under the old system, the only regulated means of providing feedback was a …

Cost/Schedule Control Systems Criteria: A Reference Guide To C/Scsc Information, Erik G. Cummings, Kirk A. Schneider
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis effort provides a valuable tool for contract performance measurement (CPM) analysts to use both while attending formalized Cost/Schedule Control Systems Criteria (C/SCSC) training, and while on the job. Research indicated a large amount of written material existed on contract performance measurement and the more specific topic of C/SCSC, yet this information was hidden in a wide array of unindexed professional journals, master's thesis, and texts. Further, while many professions have a reference guide of annotated bibliographies, CPM had none. Through an extensive literature review using several search and retrieval methods, the authors were able to amass a bibliography …
