Study Of The Wear Behaviour Of Al-4.5% Cu-3.4% Fe In Situ Composite: Effect Of Thermal And Mechanical Processing

Wear behaviour of as-cast and heat-treated spheroidal graphite (SG) cast iron has been studied under dry sliding conditions using a pin-on-disc type apparatus. Wear tests were carried out at a linear sliding speed of 0.88 m s -1, under a constant load of 1.5 kg. All tests were performed in ambient air at room temperature. Extent of wear damage and wear mechanisms were investigated by means of weight loss measurement, optical microscopy, microhardness measurement and X-ray diffractometry on wear debris. This paper reports the details of a high-pressure and -temperature in situ transmission infrared reactor cell and experimental approaches for investigation of the nature of adsorbates in CO hydrogenation and NO-CO reaction on Rh/SiO2 catalyst. The infrared cell used in this study allows easy assembling and reliable operation up to 773 K and 6.0 MPa. The structure and coverage of adsorbates during reaction are determined by an infrared spectrometer, and the composition of gaseous effluent from the infrared cell is monitored by a mass spectrometer. The presentation recommends an approach for unifying electronic system protection designs for a wide spectrum of electromagnetic environments. A general electromagnetic topological construct is developed as the basis for a consistent shielding and terminal protection methodology. Spectral characteristics of multiple interfering electromagnetic sources, both internal and external, are described. Effects addressed include EMI/EMC, lightning, nuclear EMP, and RF weapons. Protection practices for individual effects are discussed and means for integrating these into a single protection topology.

The grain boundary regions of nanophase Cu metal are investigated using the x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) technique. Typical samples made by standard techniques need to be greatly thinned if measured in transmission in order to eliminate experimental artifacts which erroneously lower the apparent coordination number. To avoid this problem the samples were measured by the total electron yield technique. The results indicate a grain boundary structure which, on the average, is similar to that in conventional polycrystalline Cu, contrary to previous XAFS measurements made in transmission which indicated a lower coordination number.

Chain conformational distribution of a biodegradable polyester elastomer, poly(p-hydroxy­octanoate) (PHO), has been analyzed using vibrational spectroscopy in conjunction with normal vibrational analysis. For the as-prepared, mainly amorphous materials, side-chain conformation distribution is extremely broad and is consistent with the expected three-state rotational isomeric model. On the basis of our vibrational analysis, we have established that side-chain conformational distribution transforms to one containing mainly the extended form after thermal annealing. In contrast, the conformational distribution of the side chains remains unchanged as a function of strain. Segmented liquid crystalline polyurethanes (LCPUE) have been studied by infrared
spectroscopy. The nematic liquid crystalline hard domains act as physical cross-links and can be oriented
by the application of mechanical strain. The orientation function achievable in the hard segments results
from the combination of mechanical strain and stress-softening. Furthermore, elastic deformation induces
the rearrangement of some hard segments in the mesophase into a more ordered packing. Hightemperature
infrared spectra have been correlated with thermal transitions of the LCPUE, and a liquidliquid
microphase-separated morphology above the isotropization of the mesophase appears to exist.

Potentials And Prospects For Application Of Supercritical Fluid Technology In Bioprocessing, Andrzej B. Jarzebski, Janusz J. Malinowski

Recent investigations on the application ofsupercritical (SC)Jluid technology in bin- andfood chemistry are reviewed. The gas-antisolvent crystallization and rapid expansion of SC&id emerge as attractive methods for micron-size particle formation. Also gainingground is enzymic catalysis in SC CO,, which offers the possibility of integrated synthesis-product recovery processes. These processes, successfully tested on a lahoratoly scale, need further scale-up and optimization. Supercritical CO, has proven to be unfriendly, or even toxic, for living microorgcmisms, which precludes direct fermentation in dense CO, but does not rule out other useful applications.
