Laminar Natural Convection In A Discretely Heated Cavity: I—Assessment Of Three-Dimensional Effects, Theodore J. Heindel, S. Ramadhyani, F. P. Incropera
Theodore J. Heindel
Two and three-dimensional calculations have been performed for laminar natural convection induced by a 3 × 3 array of discrete heat sources flush-mounted to one vertical wall of a rectangular cavity whose opposite wall was isothermally cooled. Edge effects predicted by the three-dimensional model yielded local and average Nusselt numbers that exceeded those obtained from the two-dimensional model, as well as average surface temperatures that were smaller than the two-dimensional predictions. For heater aspect ratios Ahtr ≲ 3, average Nusselt numbers increased with decreasing Ahtr . However, for Ahtr ≳ 3, the two and three-dimensional predictions were within 5 percent …

Laminar Natural Convection In A Discretely Heated Cavity: Ii—Comparisons Of Experimental And Theoretical Results, Theodore J. Heindel, F. P. Incropera, S. Ramadhyani

Three-dimensional numerical predictions and experimental data have been obtained for natural convection from a 3 × 3 array of discrete heat sources flush-mounted on one vertical wall of a rectangular cavity and cooled by the opposing wall. Predictions performed in a companion paper (Heindel et al., 1995a) revealed that three-dimensional edge effects are significant and that, with increasing Rayleigh number, flow and heat transfer become more uniform across each heater face. The three-dimensional predictions are in excellent agreement with the data of this study, whereas a two-dimensional model of the experimental geometry underpredicts average heat transfer by as much as …

Dynamic Simulation Of Crack Propagation With Dislocation Emission And Migration, N. Zacharopoulos, D. J. Rolovitz, Richard Alan Lesar
Richard Alan Lesar
We present a simulation procedure for fracture that self-consistently accounts for dislocation emission, dislocation migration and crack growth. We find that the dislocation microstructure in front of the crack tip is highly organized and shows a complex temporal-spatial evolution. The final dislocation microstructure and the number of emitted dislocations immediately proceeding fracture varies rapidly with the loading rate. For high loading rates, fracture occurs at smaller loads with increasing loading rate. However, the load at fracture shows a maximum with respect to loading rates.
Modeling Multiple Reactive Scalar Mixing With The Generalized Iem Model, Kuochen Tsai, Rodney O. Fox
Modeling Multiple Reactive Scalar Mixing With The Generalized Iem Model, Kuochen Tsai, Rodney O. Fox
Rodney O. Fox
An outstanding feature of the amplitude mapping closure is its ability to relax an arbitrary initial probability density function (PDF) to a Gaussian PDF asymptotically. Due to the difficulties in computing either the analytical or numerical solution, the mapping closure has never been applied to multiple scalars with finite reaction rates. In this work, the generalized IEM (GIEM) model is combined with the mapping closure to model the molecular mixing terms in the PDF balance equation. The GIEM model assumes a linear relationship between the rates of change of the reactive scalars and an inert scalar (shadow scalar) during the …

Study Of The Wear Behaviour Of Al-4.5% Cu-3.4% Fe In Situ Composite: Effect Of Thermal And Mechanical Processing
A.S. Md Abdul Haseeb
Wear behaviour of as-cast and heat-treated spheroidal graphite (SG) cast iron has been studied under dry sliding conditions using a pin-on-disc type apparatus. Wear tests were carried out at a linear sliding speed of 0.88 m s -1, under a constant load of 1.5 kg. All tests were performed in ambient air at room temperature. Extent of wear damage and wear mechanisms were investigated by means of weight loss measurement, optical microscopy, microhardness measurement and X-ray diffractometry on wear debris. The wear rate measured after 9500 m of sliding is found to be about three times higher in the as-cast …

Origin Of The 〈11/20〉 Atomic Short-Range Order In Au-Rich Au-Fe Alloys, M. F. Ling, J. B. Staunton, Duane D. Johnson, F. J. Pinski
Duane D. Johnson
We have calculated the atomic short-range order (ASRO) and paramagnetic susceptibility in high-temperature, chemically disordered Au75Fe25 and Au90Fe10, using a density-functional-based, electronic-structure method. For both alloys, we obtain 〈11/20〉-type ASRO, in excellent agreement with experiments performed on samples that have been fast quenched from high temperature. We also identify the underlying electronic mechanism responsible for this unusual ordering behavior. During annealing at high temperatures, we suggest that aligning local moments via an external magnetic field will produce interesting AuFe alloys with 〈100〉-type ASRO.

This paper reports the details of a high-pressure and -temperature in situ transmission infrared reactor cell and experimental approaches for investigation of the nature of adsorbates in CO hydrogenation and NO-CO reaction on Rh/SiO2 catalyst. The infrared cell used in this study allows easy assembling and reliable operation up to 773 K and 6.0 MPa. The structure and coverage of adsorbates during reaction are determined by an infrared spectrometer, and the composition of gaseous effluent from the infrared cell is monitored by a mass spectrometer. The steady-state (CO)-C-13 step transient shows that gaseous CO rapidly exchanges with adsorbed CO, which …

Results Of A Delphi Study On Transport Research Needs, Marcus Ramsay Wigan
Results Of A Delphi Study On Transport Research Needs, Marcus Ramsay Wigan
Marcus R Wigan
A Delphi survey was undertaken with a selection of professionals in academic, government and consulting across the world. The objective was to identify the application areas where priorities should be placed, and the current status of the research and information tools needed to address them. For this reason both modelling and application experts were included. The shifts in priorities over the last five years, and the differences in view between the three sectors are presented. The attitudes towards a range of specific research and development directions were also assessed. Later republished in the Journal of Transport Statistics, but without this, …
A Unified Topological Approach To Electromagnetic Environmental Effects Protection, George H. Baker, J. Philip Castillo, Edward F. Vance
A Unified Topological Approach To Electromagnetic Environmental Effects Protection, George H. Baker, J. Philip Castillo, Edward F. Vance
George H Baker
The presentation recommends an approach for unifying electronic system protection designs for a wide spectrum of electromagnetic environments. A general electromagnetic topological construct is developed as the basis for a consistent shielding and terminal protection methodology. Spectral characteristics of multiple interfering electromagnetic sources, both internal and external, are described. Effects addressed include EMI/EMC, lightning, nuclear EMP, and RF weapons. Protection practices for individual effects are discussed and means for integrating these into a single protection topology.

The paper presents the implementation of air pollution monitoring in the province of Kielce (Poland), associated with verification of the location and the measuring range of points to measure the concentrations of air pollutants. For this purpose were used calculations of the pollutants dispersion and statistical analysis of measurement results obtained on existing measuring stations. In the statistical calculations were used analysis of variance homogeneity, based on Cochran, Bartlett and Hartley tests. As a result of analysis and calculations, it was found that the original location is not always correct and does not reflect the spatial differentiation of pollutant concentrations. …

The Spectral Relaxation Model Of The Scalar Dissipation Rate In Homogeneous Turbulence, Rodney O. Fox
The Spectral Relaxation Model Of The Scalar Dissipation Rate In Homogeneous Turbulence, Rodney O. Fox
Rodney O. Fox
A model for the effect of scalar spectral relaxation on the scalar dissipation rate of an inert, passive scalar (Sc>1) in fully developed homogeneous turbulence is presented. In the model, wave-number space is divided into a finite number [the total number depending on the turbulence Reynolds number Re, and the Schmidt number (SC)] of intermediate stages whose time constants are determined from the velocity spectrum. The model accounts for the evolution of the scalar spectrum from an arbitrary initial shape to its fully developed form and its effect on the scalar dissipation rate for finite Re, and Sc>1. …

Van Hove Singularity Induced L11 Ordering In Cupt, J. F. Clark, F. J. Pinski, Duane D. Johnson, P. A. Sterne, J. B. Staunton, B. Ginatempo
Duane D. Johnson
We describe an ordering mechanism that arises due to coupling between electronic states at van Hove singularities. This novel mechanism, which naturally leads to ordered structures with small unit cells, couples states near the Fermi energy which are localized at high-symmetry points in k space, in contrast to the conventional mechanism which relies on large parallel sheets of Fermi surface. Using first-principles calculations of the electronic structure of ordered and disordered alloys, we show that this mechanism drives the unusual short- and long-range order found in fcc CuPt.
