Hand mobility is commonly impaired in stroke victims. Treatment for hand impairment range from therapist-guided physical exercises to robotically controlled exoskeletons. However, A more effective treatment which actually restores hand mobility is by encouraging patients to carry out hand movements themselves. We have designed an Arduino based hand therapy device in which the user interacts with a computer graphic interface (CGI) game controlled by a glove was embedded with a force sensing resistor (FSR) at each of the fingertips except for the thumb. The interactive therapy guides the user through exercises and provides live, quantitative information by which the stroke patient …

Biomedical Engineering Western Regional Conference
The purpose of this project is to build a model, which mimics physiological conditions of the human cardiovascular system in order to simulate the parameters of the human heart in vivo. For this project, it was developed a flow phantom with vessel mimicking material, as well as blood-mimicking and tissue-mimicking fluid. Phantoms in general are specifically designed objects involving dedicated biomaterials to simulate special realistic circuits of human beings. To develop the flow phantom, low-priced biomaterials for blood mimicking fluid, tissue mimicking, and vessel mimicking material was researched.

Analysis Of Biofouling Effect On The Fatigue Life And Energy Performance Of Wave Energy Converter System, Shun-Han Yang, Jonas W. Ringsberg, Erland Johnson
MARENER 2017
This study presents an analysis of a wave energy converter (WEC) system consisting of a buoy, a mooring system, and a power cable connected to a hub. The design service life of the investigated WEC is 25 years. During this long period, its service life will be influenced by marine biofouling due to the biological activity in the water.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of biofouling with regard to the energy performance of the WEC and the fatigue lives of the mooring lines and power cable. The marine biofouling is modelled by an increase in …

Compliant Strategy For Shipowners: A Decision Framework For Air Emission Reduction Measures, Fabio Ballini Dr., Aditya Srivastava, Aykut Ölcer Dr.
MARENER 2017
The main aim of the paper is to develop a decision framework for ship owners to comply with the emission reduction regulations. Various measures available to ship owners will be analysed. This paper will discuss the need of Carbon Tax or Market Based Measures in the maritime market. A comparison between the market-based measures, operational measures, carbon tax and abatement measures for averting air emissions of carbon equivalent will be made.
An overview of air emissions caused by the shipping sector will be given along with the methods to keep records of air emissions. There are no uniform standardised methods …

High-Order Mooring Simulations For Increased Accuracy In Wave Energy Applications, Johannes Palm, Claes Eskilsson, Lars Bergdahl
MARENER 2017
The prevailing simulation technique for floating wave energy converters (WECs) is to use the linear hydrodynamics in convolution form to solve for the motion of the floating structure. This allows for very fast time domain simulations with the possibility to include non-linear reaction forces from e.g. moorings and power take off (PTO). Although its accuracy for very large motion amplitudes is debated (Yu and Li 2015, Palm 2015), it is the best method available to make long-term simulations of WEC response.
Brown and Mavrakos (1999) showed a big difference in mooring response depending on how the mooring cables of marine …

Energy Consumption Of Small Scale Fishing Vessel Operations In Indonesia: A Case Study In Palabuhanratu, Indonesia, Vita R. Kurniawati, Richard W. Birmingham, Alan J. Murphy
MARENER 2017
About 79% of the global fishing fleet is small motorized boats typically operating in coastal areas, supplying local markets, and contributing to human well-being through food supplies and economic development. For example, Indonesian fisheries which predominantly are artisanal fishing, have supported 54% of animal protein intake, accounted for 2% of employment level and increased the fishermen’s prosperity index by 2.44%. However, they cause significant environmental impacts including fish resource depletion and intensive energy use. Balancing the benefits and challenges, sustainably managing these fishing operations is an important yet complex task given the requirements to proportionally account for fish resources, fishing …

Computational Studies Of Grain Boundary Behavior In Uranium Dioxide Nuclear Fuels, Eric Nelson, Lan Li (Mentor), Simon C. Middleburgh (Mentor)
Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research
Nuclear power is responsible for the production of 380,000 Megawatts of energy worldwide, which results in over 11% of the world’s energy production [world-nuclear.org]. Pellet-cladding interactions (PCI) are a key nuclear fuel failure mechanism which presents formidable challenges to researchers due to extreme nuclear fission conditions. Although PCI interactions have been reduced due to fuel additives, understandings of PCI interactions remain elusive. We propose new approaches to increase understanding of nuclear fuel interactions; specifically, uranium dioxide and the effects of dopants. This study focuses on amorphous uranium dioxide and fission products, while benchmarking new methods with previous computational studies. Results …

Many traditionally used low cost alloys are easily corroded in steam or supercritical CO2. An effective solution is to utilize ceramic heat exchangers that are often integrated with metallic components which result in a significant thermal expansion mismatch. The goal of this project is to develop a sealing method to create a hermetic joint between the ceramic and metal alloy. Proposed is a seal ring containing a cermet powder with a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) higher than the ceramic and metal to produce a high temperature compressive seal. Cermets of Ag and MgO have been selected to …

Verifying The Implementation Of An Anisotropic Grain Boundary Energy Model In Idaho National Lab’S Marmot, John-Michael H. Bradley, Evan D. Hansen, Jarin C. French, Yongfeng Zhang (Mentor)
Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research
This work aims to verify the correct implementation of an anisotropic grain boundary (GB) energy model for face-centered cubic (FCC) and fluorite materials in Idaho National Laboratory’s phase field fuel performance code MARMOT. The model was recently implemented in MARMOT with the purpose of enabling higher fidelity simulations of UO2 nuclear fuels. As part of verification, tests were performed to measure the energy dependence on misorientation of high symmetry GBs in an FCC metal (Cu). The energies of the [100], [110], and [111] twist boundaries result as predicted, as do the energies of the [111] symmetric tilt boundaries. However, …

ENERGY Research and Lesson Plans
Students will participate in a Solar Panel Cricket lab to determine which environmental condition would allow for the solar panel to produce the most power. The three conditions are inside, inside with a flashlight, or outside in the sun. The students will complete a correlating lab worksheet. Students will also ask questions and hold discussions with the guest speaker. Students will actively participate while the guest speaker is presenting.
