Batteryless Nfc-Enabled Wireless Sensor Node: Design, Optimization, And Implementation, Rishin Patra
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
This thesis presents the design, construction, and testing of a batteryless Near-field communication (NFC) powered wireless sensor node intended for maintenance free, short range Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The work focuses on harvesting energy from a 13.56 MHz NFC field to power a very low-power sensing platform capa- ble of measuring temperature, pressure, and humidity without the use of batteries or wired power. The motivation behind this approach is the growing need for reliable, sustainable, and low-maintenance sensing systems that can operate in environments where battery replacement is impractical, undesirable, or environmentally costly. The prototype is built around a …
Visible Modulation Of Epsilon Near Zero Materials, Jonathan M. Weber
Visible Modulation Of Epsilon Near Zero Materials, Jonathan M. Weber
Theses and Dissertations
While Epsilon-Near-Zero materials have offered many benefits from their introduction to the field of nonlinear optics, those materials have also narrowed the range of wavelengths often studied. With reliable and proven enhancements to light-matter interaction in the ENZ region, many researchers have had little reason to extend the spectrum measured in experiments. The purpose of this work is to measure the intensity dependent refractive index of Indium Tin Oxide across a broad spectral range, from ultraviolet to near infrared, to improve the understanding of semiconductor nonlinearities far from Lorentz and Drude resonances. Furthermore, the visible region is naturally low-loss in …

Implementation Of Quantized Artificial Neural Networks With Spintronic Stochastic Computing, Saadi Sabyasachi Mr.
Theses and Dissertations
Artificial intelligence or machine learning is going through a rapid expansion. It also incurs significant costs for power and device footprints. Various approaches are being explored to design energy and hardware efficient machine learning models. Stochastic computing has been proposed for efficient machine learning implementation. It requires a source of random number generation which poses some practical challenges. So spintronic solutions such as magnetic tunnel junction has been used for random number generation. Again, spintronic random number generation to implement high precision circuit is prone to device-to-device variations. Hence we designed quantized artificial neural network with spintronic stochastic computing which …

Identification Of Potential Superconductor Quench Precursors Using Frequency Domain Feature Analysis, Benjamin C. Roehrig
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Superconducting magnets are important pieces of technology in the world of particle accelerators, allowing researchers to study atomic and subatomic phenomena, among other things. In some instances, superconductors can lose this non-resistive property in a phenomenon known as quenching, which can cause damage to the magnets. This potential danger prompts the introduction of systems to predict when a quench is imminent; one such implementation is through the use of acoustic sensors that detect vibrations within the magnet. Within these acoustic sensor signals, significantly above-noise disturbances (referred to as ”events”) can be identified. Our research applies the statistical framework of a …
Semantic Think-On-Graph (Semtog) : Enhancing Graphrag Through Semantic Community Detection, Sugam Mishra
Semantic Think-On-Graph (Semtog) : Enhancing Graphrag Through Semantic Community Detection, Sugam Mishra
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Graph-based Retrieval-Augmented Generation (GraphRAG) enhances large language models (LLMs) by grounding their reasoning in structured knowledge graphs, making them more reliable for multi-hop reasoning and factual QA. A central mechanism in Think-on-Graph systems such as ToG[14] and FastToG[7] is community detection, which groups locally related nodes into compact subgraphs so that LLMs can reason over focused, information-rich neighborhoods instead of traversing the entire graph. However, these methods rely purely on structural connectivity, often scattering semantically related entities across different communities and weakening the evidence provided to the LLM. We propose Semantic Think-on-Graph (SemToG), a semantic-aware extension of FastToG[7] that integrates …

Distributed Energy Resources (Der) Capacity Estimation With Spatiotemporal Downscaling For Transmission And Distribution Coordination, Abhilasha Suvedi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The primary objective of this thesis is to accurately estimate the capacity of distributed energy resources (DERs) using the spatiotemporally downscaled local solar irradiance for their efficient integration into transmission-level grid operations. Accurate estimation of DER capacity is crucial for their enhanced integration into real-time electricity markets. Different methods of spatiotemporally downscaling the solar irradiance are presented in this thesis, followed by their integration into the 12 house distribution network – a low voltage residential distribution system. Grid support functions (GSFs) like Volt-Watt Control, Volt-VAR control, and Frequency-Watt Control are applied to effectively regulate the frequency and maintain the voltage …

Traditional bathymetry measures require a large number of human hours, and many bathymetry records are obsolete or missing. Automated measures of bathymetry would reduce costs and increase accessibility for research and applications. In this paper, we optimized a recent machine learning model, named CatBoostOpt, to estimate bathymetry based on high-resolution WorldView-2 (WV-2) multi-spectral optical satellite images. CatBoostOpt was demonstrated across the Florida Big Bend coastline, where the model learned correlations between in situ sound Navigation and Ranging (Sonar) bathymetry measurements and the corresponding multi-spectral reflectance values in WV-2 images to map bathymetry. We evaluated three different feature transformations as inputs …

The accuracy of Power-Supply-Induced Jitter (PSIJ) simulation in Input/Output Buffer Information Specification (IBIS) models is critical for ensuring robust high-speed signal integrity analysis, but it lacks accuracy in predicting the PSIJ when the pre-driver exists in the model. Previous studies have proposed methods to improve IBIS PSIJ simulation accuracy with pre-driver effect included in the IBIS switching coefficients modification process. However, these methods fail to accurately model the output waveform slew rate change with varied power noise. In this work, an improved modification method was proposed to incorporate power-aware characteristics into the modified IBIS model, thereby improving the accuracy of …

Normalization of medical concepts to an ontology is a key aspect of the natural language processing of biomedical text. It enables the mapping of medical expressions to standardized ontology terms and their identifiers, thereby enhancing the interoperability and computability of medical concepts. Although large language models (LLMs) can identify and standardize medical terms, they may struggle to accurately map ontology terms to their corresponding ontology identifiers. These challenges arise from the stochastic nature of LLMs, their limited exposure to uncommon ontology identifiers during training, and their lack of an integrated lookup mechanism. We generated test sets of synthetic terms to …

In automotive systems, a metal chassis protects the components against the external environment. However, the metal chassis is conductive, which results in unwanted conducted emission (CE) coupling to electric components. An inductor used for power factor correction (PFC) is one of the affected components. When the inductor is mated with the metal chassis, the impedance of the inductor changes. It is also hard to predict the CE coupling due to the structure-dependent characteristics. That is, the CE coupling is not negligible and hard to clarify. Therefore, this article proposes an efficient modeling method for the inductor which is mated with …

The voltage regulator module (VRM) impacts the power distribution network (PDN) impedance in the low frequency range. The effect of VRM is essential for reliable PDN analysis and simulation. However, the existing VRM models for power integrity (PI) simulation lack an in-depth understanding of the effect of the feedback control in the VRM. In this paper, the impact of the VRM control loop on the PDN impedance is investigated. The relationship between the VRM output impedance and the PDN impedance at the IC input pin is derived. The output impedance of a VRM is analyzed using small signal analysis. Eventually, …

Power and return planes are part of the power delivery network of almost all modern high frequency printed circuit boards. These power and return planes can form the basis of unintended radiated emissions from, or radiated coupling to, these boards. Predicting coupling to complex systems is a difficult problem and typically reserved for full wave simulations. Recent works have introduced segmentation approaches that are able to predict coupling to complex printed circuit board designs by using pre-rendered segments and cascading these segments through a circuit solver approach. The extended S-parameter models used by the segmentation approach currently do not include …

Radiated emissions from the noise-generating components in modern electronic devices are a significant concern for both electromagnetic interference and RF interference. Shielding cans are commonly used to suppress emissions from noise sources, but accurate shielding effectiveness evaluation requires a clean, well-defined radiation source that can reliably mimic real emissions for repeatable measurements. Slot-backed microstrip antennas provide a practical alternative to loop antennas, offering zero height, low parasitic radiation, and seamless printed circuit board integration. This article proposes an analytical model for estimating the magnetic dipole moment of slot-backed microstrip structures. The model captures both the discontinuity effects and radiated characteristics …

Low-voltage distribution networks often suffer from incomplete or outdated network records, making it challenging to obtain the topology and line parameters under actual operating conditions. To address this issue, a joint identification method is proposed based on the propagation of load transient characteristics. First, the principle of load characteristic propagation is elaborated, and the concept of coupling impedance is introduced. Second, a set of linear regression equations is established based on the changes in current and voltage of the terminal measurements before and after load switching, and then these equations are solved using the least squares method to form the …

Structural Observability (SO) and Structural Monitorability (SM) are structural properties utilized to determine the state and fault-free operation of components, respectively, in a bond graph (BG) model. BGs enable qualitative system analysis, evaluating whether existing sets of sensors and actuators ensure Structural Observability (SO) and Structural Controllability (SC) without knowledge of parametric values. Furthermore, the analysis determines whether there are sufficient sensors available to identify component faults accurately. This work provides a framework for automated sensor placement in a multi-domain physical system while analyzing the SO and SM properties. The MATLAB Structural Analysis Toolbox (MATSAT) conducts sensor placement in a …

The Dual Active Bridge (DAB) is a reliable and efficient converter capable of providing bi-directional power transfer and galvanic isolation. An ac-ac DAB can control both active and reactive power flow. The present work introduces a combined feedback/feed-forward current control system, utilizing the calculated and measured converter currents translated into the dq reference frame, to control the output power. The system was simulated in PLECS to demonstrate the control algorithm's ability to track the dq currents and provide the necessary output power.

This study evaluates the ability of large language models (LLMs) to map biomedical ontology terms to their corresponding ontology IDs across the Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO), Gene Ontology (GO), and UniProtKB terminologies. Using counts of ontology IDs in the PubMed Central (PMC) dataset as a surrogate for their prevalence in the biomedical literature, we examined the relationship between ontology ID prevalence and mapping accuracy. Results indicate that ontology ID prevalence strongly predicts accurate mapping of HPO terms to HPO IDs, GO terms to GO IDs, and protein names to UniProtKB accession numbers. Higher prevalence of ontology IDs in the biomedical …

This paper addresses the infinite horizon optimal tracking control problem for partially uncertain control-affine nonlinear discrete-time (DT) systems, where the control input dynamics are known. Multi-layer critic and actor neural networks (MNNs) are utilized for online estimation of the infinite horizon value function and optimal control input. The NN weights are tuned online using a direct temporal difference error (TDE)-driven learning approach, which modifies the singular values of the gradient with respect to the NN weights to accelerate their convergence. The critic NN uses a novel experience replay technique to improve sample efficiency without introducing biased TDEs and guarantee the …

Active Microwave-Thermographic Signal Reconstruction, Logan M. Wilcox, Emma T. Bohannon, Kristen M. Donnell
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Active microwave thermography (AMT) is a coupled electromagnetic (EM) and thermographic nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E) technique. AMT utilizes a radiating EM source (e.g., an antenna) that induces dielectric/magnetic heating on a specimen under test (SUT) which is subsequently spatiotemporally imaged with an infrared (IR) camera. As all antennas have spatial variation in their radiated power density, a nonuniform thermal excitation results within (or on the surface of) the SUT. This nonuniform heating causes uncertainty in defect detection and has the potential to lead to false positives and/or negatives. To this end, thermographic signal reconstruction (TSR), a well-established thermographic signal …

frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) are periodic arrays of conductive elements or apertures that reflect and/or transmit incident electromagnetic energy. Their response depends on parameters, such as element shape, unit cell dimensions, dielectric properties, and the local environment, making them suitable for structural health monitoring (SHM) applications. This article presents a dual-parameter FSS-based sensor design capable of measuring small-scale uni-directional longitudinal strain (0%–0.5%) and temperature (23 ◦C–223 ◦C). The sensor integrates two-unit cells: 1) a patch-based cell on a thin substrate for strain sensing, offering enhanced strain transfer and superior sensitivity (~16–18 MHz/0.1%) and 2) a loop-based cell with a temperature-sensitive …

This paper develops an analytical model of the bidirectional AC-AC Dual Active Bridge (DAB) converter. The passive components of the AC-AC DAB are subject to grid, switching, and sideband harmonics. Thus, it is impossible to model via the conventional Generalized Average Method (GAM). It has been numerically shown that Extended GAM (EGAM) can be used to model the AC-AC DAB converter. In this paper, an analytical sixteenth order EGAM-model has been developed that considers only grid harmonics at the filter components and only sideband harmonics for the transformer leakage inductor. A closed-form expression is developed for the 2D convolution product. …

Active microwave thermography (AMT) is a coupled electromagnetic (EM) and thermographic nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E) technique. AMT utilizes a radiating EM source (e.g., an antenna) that induces dielectric/magnetic heating on a specimen under test (SUT). Fiber optic inline interferometers are widely used for high-precision sensing due to their sensitivity, compactness, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. Traditional optical spectral analysis methods suffer from limited dynamic range due to free spectral range (FSR) constraints, while microwave photonic filtering (MPF) techniques based on dispersion Fourier transform (DFT) provide an alternative by mapping optical signals into the radio frequency (RF) domain. However, conventional passband frequency tracking in MPF systems has limited sensitivity, and the recently demonstrated phase-based methods, though highly sensitive, are constrained by phase wrapping beyond 2π. In this work, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an integrated magnitude–phase …
