The Computer-Aided Generation Of Flow-Tables For Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Ronald Lee Altman
The Computer-Aided Generation Of Flow-Tables For Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Ronald Lee Altman
Masters Theses
"One step in the synthesis of asynchronous sequential circuits is the construction of a flow table. This paper discusses the requirements of a computer program to allow on-line generation of flow tables for asynchronous sequential circuits. Such topics as the form of the data entered into the program, the type of terminal required, the routines necessary for the designer to enter and correct data, and the internal data structure are discussed. An algorithm for the generation of these flow tables is also presented"--Abstract, page ii.
A Method Of Supervised Pattern Recognition By An Adaptive Hypersphere Decision Threshold, Darroll Steven Mccormack
A Method Of Supervised Pattern Recognition By An Adaptive Hypersphere Decision Threshold, Darroll Steven Mccormack
Masters Theses
"In this study the Bayes likelihood detector is combined with an adaptive decision threshold classifier to solve the multicategory pattern recognition problem. It is assumed that the pattern classes can be represented by an n-dimensional vector sample taken from a multivariate gaussian probability distribution. This study presents (1) the derivation of the A̲daptive H̲ypersphere D̲ecision T̲hreshold classifier (AHDT classifier) and shows (2) how the AHDT classifier minimizes the probability of error using the learning patterns. Finally the AHDT classifier is applied to the solution of a physical problem through computer simulation"--Abstract, page ii.

Neutron Radiation Damage In Silicon Transistors, C. A. Goben, F. M. Smits, J. L. Wirth
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In the investigation of base and collector current as a function of the emitter-to-base voltage, previous studies have shown that neutron-induced base current has components originating in the emitter space charge region as well as the neutral base region. This study shows that while the low injection level neutron-induced base current is dominated by the space charge component, the high injection behavior appears to be controlled by recombination in the neutral base region. Additional experiments performed in special tetrode transistors and van der Pauw-type samples indicate that changes in collector current are dominated by recombination in the neutral base, while …
Numerical Studies Of An Inverse Pinch Device, John Richard Freeman
Numerical Studies Of An Inverse Pinch Device, John Richard Freeman
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The inverse pinch configuration has been recognized as a possible means of producing stable, repeatable shock waves in a plasma for laboratory investigation. The simple geometry permits investigation of cases with or without an initial transverse magnetic field in an un-ionized or pre-ionized medium. Previous analytic work for this geometry has been restricted to a snowplow model, sometimes including coupling with the external circuitry. The solution presented here consists of a finite difference, Lagrangian coordinate system solution for a one-fluid hydromagnetic model. The hydromagnetic model chosen includes the effects of a variable degree of ionization, assuming a hydrogenic plasma. Complete …
Small-Signal Impedance Of A Junction Diode At High Injection Levels, John E. Lundy
Small-Signal Impedance Of A Junction Diode At High Injection Levels, John E. Lundy
Masters Theses
"A mathematical expression for the driving point impedance of a junction diode at high injection levels is developed. To evaluate the impedance versus frequency characteristic of a diode, it is necessary to know the minority carrier lifetime as a function of injection level and doping density in the base (lightly doped) region, the junction area, and the base width. The interesting characteristic of the diode impedance at high injection levels is the inductive reactance displayed by the diode.
The expression is developed by solving the differential equation for charge flow in the base region of a diode assuming space-charge neutrality …
A Multiple-Input Chemical 'Memistor' For Adaptive Circuits, Richard Franklin Crall
A Multiple-Input Chemical 'Memistor' For Adaptive Circuits, Richard Franklin Crall
Masters Theses
"A modification of Widrow’s "memistor" is made in a form suitable for extension to multiple-input devices. This modified form is extensively investigated using analog field maps, and through experimental testing. The multiple-input device presented exhibits good adaptive characteristics and reduces the number of interconnections required in the external circuitry"--Abstract, page ii.
A Class Of Pattern Recognition Machines, Shaw Yih Chung
A Class Of Pattern Recognition Machines, Shaw Yih Chung
Masters Theses
"The classification of signals through the use of pattern recognition techniques may be viewed as a statistical classification problem since at least some pattern classes are analog signals which have been contaminated by additive noise. In order to represent these signals at the input of a pattern classifier they are sampled and a vector and an m-dimensional vector space used to describe the pattern. Consequently, these pattern samples are processed to determine the parameters of the statistics. In this study the additive noise was assumed to be Gaussian in nature. This study was based on a priori knowledge of the …
A Shunt-Feed Antenna System On A Small Supersonic Aircraft, Larry Joseph Nanney
A Shunt-Feed Antenna System On A Small Supersonic Aircraft, Larry Joseph Nanney
Masters Theses
"A technique was developed which successfully predicted the reactance of a shunt cavity exciting the air frame of a small supersonic aircraft as an antenna. This was possible by the use of the wire above a ground place approximation which closely defined the characteristic impedance of the shunt fed cavity. A correlation was made between the maximum values of parallel resistance of the shunt fed cavity and the length of the air frame or portions of the air frame, which at this point were found to be a quarter wavelength in length. Measurements of the impedance of the shunt-feed system …
Fault Detection In Combinational Networks, Alexander Rahm
Fault Detection In Combinational Networks, Alexander Rahm
Masters Theses
"This paper presents an algorithm for locating a failure in combinational logic networks, which is a problem of importance in the maintenance of computer systems. The procedure is based on the "path sensitizing" idea for fault detection. The networks considered are non-redundant, consisting of AND, OR, and NOT elements. The class of faults investigated is that which causes a connection to appear to be logically suck-at-one or stuck-at-zero, and only single failures are treated. It is shown that the failure is generally located to a specific "fault group"--Abstract, page 2.

Negative Resistance In Cadmium Sulfide., John William Mohr
Negative Resistance In Cadmium Sulfide., John William Mohr
Masters Theses
"A light-sensitive, negative-resistance phenomenon has been observed in a special two-terminal CdS device fabricated from selected single crystals. The device differs from those used in previous investigations in that one end of the device was masked to keep out visible light and that the phenomenon was observed at room temperature. A method is described which enables the phenomenon to be observed on a reproducible basis. It was found that the CdS single crystal must have a relatively high density of traps. Possible mechanisms which may contribute to the phenomenon are discussed"--Abstract, page ii.
Mode Analysis Of The Unsymmetrically Fed Ground-Plane Aperture, John G. Hemmann
Mode Analysis Of The Unsymmetrically Fed Ground-Plane Aperture, John G. Hemmann
Masters Theses
"The problem of radiation from a waveguide-fed ground-plane aperture perturbed with a wedge-shaped dielectric insert was examined more carefully. The work initiated by Blumberg was continued, using a greater range of dielectric constants and smaller increments of angle.
Aperture field measurements were made over a range of dielectric constants for each wedge angle, in order to determine the change in amplitude distribution as a function of permittivity. Aperture phase measurements were also taken for selected angles. These were used with the amplitude data to predict, using numerical integration, the far-field radiation patterns of the perturbed aperture. Far-field patterns were then …
The Realization And Application Of Parallel Linear Feedback Shift Registers, Ross K. Heitzmann
The Realization And Application Of Parallel Linear Feedback Shift Registers, Ross K. Heitzmann
Masters Theses
"Two methods for serial-to-parallel transformation of linear feedback shift registers are briefly discussed. A third method for transformation is rigorously developed using a next-state and output equation representation of the linear feedback shift register. An algorithm is developed for simplifying the parallel machine resulting from serial-to-parallel transformation, where simplification is defined as reduction in the required number of modulo 2 adders. A computer program incorporating serial-to-parallel transformation and the simplification algorithm is provided "--Abstract, page ii.
Design Of A Nonparametric Detector For Fm Signals, James Charles Fowler
Design Of A Nonparametric Detector For Fm Signals, James Charles Fowler
Masters Theses
"The communication engineer has in the past treated the detection problem from a parametric point of view. That is, the signal has been assumed to be of a known deterministic form and the noise of a known statistical form. This approach has proved valuable in many cases, but it is subject to severe limitations, e.g., if either the noise or signal change form, a new detector must be designed. Because of these limitations there is a need to find a more general form of detector.
This study looks at a specific statistic (the Cramér-von Mises statistic) and designs a detector …
A Study Of Probability Of Error Calculations For Baseband Multi-Level Digital Transmission Systems Using The Fixed Threshold Decision Rule, Don J. Popp
Masters Theses
"This study is an investigation into analytical techniques used in deriving probability of error expressions for baseband multi-level digital transmission systems. A fixed-level decision rule is used to solve this statistical detection problem together with some simple concepts from probability theory. To illustrate these techniques, probability of error expressions are derived for the general uncoded system, a simple coded system, and a complex coded system. Curves of probability of error versus signal-to-noise ratio are plotted for the various systems considered"--Abstract, page ii.
Scanning Properties Of Unsymmetrically Loaded Aperture Arrays, Gary Dean Brunner
Scanning Properties Of Unsymmetrically Loaded Aperture Arrays, Gary Dean Brunner
Masters Theses
"Radiation patterns resulting from an array of waveguide-fed apertures, filled with assymmetrically [sic] cut dielectric inserts, in an infinite ground plane were investigated. The results of Blumberg and Hemmen concerning single apertures were applied to a two-aperture array, with emphasis upon obtaining an array capable of scanning in the far field through changes in the permittivity of the assymmetrically [sic] cut dielectric inserts. Scanning was shown to be possible with up to a 60⁰ scan angle with a "push-pull" method of varying permittivities, in which the permittivity of one insert is raised while the other is lowered. The aperture field …

An Analytic Model For The Fluxgate Magnetometer, Stanley V. Marshall
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The output voltages from various fluxgate probe types are found to have the same general form, and an analytic model has been developed with which the output may be calculated. In the saturation region where the output pulse is developed, the differential permeability can be closely approximated by an exponential, dB/dH = k1Hk2, where kl and k2 are on the order of 100 and -2.0, respectively, for cores of Supermalloy or Permalloy 80. Using this model, the effect of the nature of the excitation function on output pulse amplitude and width and the effect …

Analysis Of Time-Varying Linear Multipole Filters With Sampled Nonstationary Random Inputs, Ming-Chwan Chow
Analysis Of Time-Varying Linear Multipole Filters With Sampled Nonstationary Random Inputs, Ming-Chwan Chow
Masters Theses
"In this thesis an analytical method is developed to determine an optimum time-varying linear filter in order to satisfy the following specifications. The filters are of sampled data multipole form with n inputs and m outputs. The signal of each input is a member of a nonstationary random process, and the signal is corrupted by stationary noise.
The statistical optimization theory developed by Wiener is extended to a linear time- varying filter with nonstationary input. Correlation functions are defined for nonstationary ensembles. The mean- square error is calculated in terms of these correlation functions. By minimization of the mean-square error, …

Masters Theses
"This thesis shows that reaction jet thrust pulses, each of constant amplitude and time duration, in conjunction with sampled data error information can provide satisfactory position and/or attitude control for space vehicles.
Incremental phase-plane analysis of the system yields a technique for determining system response and suggests a means of compensation. Control system response for the vehicle under the influence of external forces is shown to be satisfactory by digital computer simulation"--Abstract, page ii.
An Ac Method Of Measuring The Conductivity Of Dielectric Liquids., Henry E. Fischer
An Ac Method Of Measuring The Conductivity Of Dielectric Liquids., Henry E. Fischer
Masters Theses
"The problem undertaken in this thesis is the presentation of a method of measuring the conductivity of dielectric liquids in which the liquid is used as the parallel tank circuit of a modified Wien-bridge oscillator. The main advantage of this method is that the frequency of the voltage applied to the liquid can be varied by simply varying the oscillator frequency. This allows the selection of a frequency which is best suited to the liquid in regard to polarization and relaxation time.
An oscillator was designed, built and used in the laboratory to measure the conductivity of the dielectric liquids …

Space-Charge Effects As Determined By Initial-Field Conditions, Tsing-Yih Wang
Masters Theses
"A method for calculating the current density passing between two parallel plane electrodes for different values of positive charges as a function of " field at the emitter to field for no charge ratio " is presented.
The problem of the potential distribution between the electrodes has been solved for one particular case in which the positive charges are assumed to be proportional to the field at the emitter. The expressions for the electric field, the velocity of charges, and the charge density as a function of the potential are also presented and plotted as a function of the distance. …

An Application Of The Variable Gradient Method Of Generating Liapunov Functions To Discrete Systems, Henry N. Peterson
Masters Theses
"The variable gradient method of generating Liapunov functions has been used only for continuous systems. This thesis presents an application of the variable gradient method to non-linear sampled data control systems.
Certain modifications to the variable gradient method are developed and several examples are presented which demonstrate the application. An attempt was made to synthesize the control system parameters, but due to the complexity of the ΔV functions, the synthesis in general cannot easily be obtained . To circumvent the problem of determining if the ΔV functions are negative definite, a set of computer programs were written to determine a …
Optimum Linear And Adaptive Polynomial Smoothers, Stanley Bruce Alterman
Optimum Linear And Adaptive Polynomial Smoothers, Stanley Bruce Alterman
Dissertations
The design of optimum polynomial digital data smoothers (filters) is considered for linear and adaptive processing systems. It is shown that a significant improvement in performance can be obtained by using linear smoothers that take into account known a priori constraints or distributions of the input signal. The procedure for designing optimum (minimum mean square error) adaptive polynomial data smoothers is then discussed and analyzed. The optimum smoother makes use of a priori signal statistics combined with an adaptive Bayesian weighting of a bank of conditionally optimum smoothers. Use of this technique permits large improvements in performance with a minimum …
Determining And Telemetering Snowpack Water Content In Mountainous Terrain, Stephen Davis Clarke
Determining And Telemetering Snowpack Water Content In Mountainous Terrain, Stephen Davis Clarke
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Snowpack water content is an important parameter in streamflow forecasts. At the present time water content of the snowpack is determined by manual methods, which are often expensive and time-consuming. The use of a pressure pillow to determine water content has shown promise in experimental applications.
The design and analysis of a pressure transducer suitable for use with remote telemetry equipment is presented. The transducer uses changing fluid pressure to vary an inductor.
Telemetry techniques suitable for use on Utah snow courses are analyzed. Emphasis is given to the passive and active remote radio relays.
The Electrical Conductivity Of Some Cryogenic Fluids, Walter L. Willis
The Electrical Conductivity Of Some Cryogenic Fluids, Walter L. Willis
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Cryogens (liquefied gases with low boiling points) are, in general, excellent insulators. Prior to this investigation, no measurements of conductivity in cryogens had been successful. An upper limit of conductivity in the range 10-15 to 10-17 mho/cm had been established for some cryogens. Data from the organic chemicals and petrol m industries indicated that fluids with conductivities in the 10-11 to 10-15 mho/cm range could present electrostatic potential hazards, particularly in situations of large volume storage and high flow rates. The advent of large capacity dewars and associated high flow rates of cryogens in the aerospace …
A Computer Approach To Transistor Circuit Design, Kwok Chee Hong
A Computer Approach To Transistor Circuit Design, Kwok Chee Hong
Masters Theses
"The design of amplifiers is usually approached through experimental study. This thesis proposes a mathematical approach, using a digital computer to predict the performance of an active transistor circuit (a frequency equalizer circuit to compensate for the RIAA recording frequency characteristics) prior to the actual construction of the physical system. The simple but powerful computer analysis method will be based upon the nodal equations of the complete circuit. The primary aim is to design a circuit which would give a desired frequency-gain characteristic. The complete set of simultaneous complex nodal equations describing the circuit operation is then written. Based on …
