Relativistic Scattered-Wave Theory, Cary Y. Yang, Sohrab Rabii Aug 1975

Relativistic Scattered-Wave Theory, Cary Y. Yang, Sohrab Rabii

Electrical and Computer Engineering

A scattered-wave formalism based on the one-electron Dirac equation for a muffin-tin potential is presented. It is shown that the resulting relativistic secular equations reduce to their nonrelativistic counterparts in the infinite-rest-energy limit.

Resonance Raman Scattering And Collision-Induced Redistribution Scattering In I2, D. L. Rousseau, G. D. Patterson, P. F. Williams

P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications

We report the first experimental observation of broad-banded re-emission resulting from quasi-elastic collisional transfer processes. The data may be interpreted by the general theory of scattering of monochromatic light in gases. The connection between this theory and one derived for solids is discussed.

Electromagnetic Modes Of An Inhomogeneous Sphere, Lee W. Casperson Apr 1975

Electromagnetic Modes Of An Inhomogeneous Sphere, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Vector wave solutions are derived for the electromagnetic modes of a sphere having radial variations of the refractive index and gain. For some inhomogeneity models, confined-mode solutions exist. The results are applicable to the refracting atmospheres of stars and planets.

Integrated Circuits, Julio Garcia Mar 1975

Integrated Circuits, Julio Garcia

Graduate Research Papers

The technology of integrated circuits is_ almost new in Peru, writer's country-. It is being used mainly in black and white television sets and in some audio amplifier equipment. As any new technology, first, it is necessary to be very familiar with it in order to exploit it adequately and get all the benefits from it. The writer feels this lack of knowledge, and wants to take advantage of being here to learn the technology and techniques for using integrated circuits.

Ellipsometric Function Of A Film-Substrate System: Applications To The Design Of Reflection-Type Optical Devices And To Ellipsometry, R. M.A. Azzam, A.-R. M. Zaghloul, N. M. Bashara Mar 1975

Ellipsometric Function Of A Film-Substrate System: Applications To The Design Of Reflection-Type Optical Devices And To Ellipsometry, R. M.A. Azzam, A.-R. M. Zaghloul, N. M. Bashara

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The ratio ρ = Rp/Rs of the complex amplitude-reflection coefficients Rp and Rs for light polarized parallel (p) and perpendicular (s) to the plane of incidence, reflected from an optically isotropic film-substrate system, is investigated as a function of the angle of incidence ϕ and the film thickness d. Both constant-angle-of-incidence contours (CAIC) and constant-thickness contours (CTC) of the ellipsometric function ρ(ϕ,d) in the complex ρ plane are examined. For transparent films, ρ(ϕ,d) is a periodic function of d with period Dϕ that is a function of ϕ. …

Design Of A Yig-Tuned Oscillator, Tien Liang Jin Jan 1975

Design Of A Yig-Tuned Oscillator, Tien Liang Jin

Theses

A technique for designing YIG (yttrium-iron garnet) tuned transistor oscillators, tunable over the range of frequencies from 500 to 950 MHZ, is presented. The approach taken differs appreciably from that used in the design of conventional LC-tuned oscillators. One major difference is that the YIG tuning mechanism is electrically controlled. The YIG tuning element is treated as a single unit and is not resolved into an equivalent LC circuit. Instead, a direct method using reflection coefficients measured at network terminals to characterize various design stages is applied. The transistor is also characterized by reflection and transmission coefficients, i.e., S-parameters. Thus …

Creating The Electric Energy Economy, L. G. Hauser Jan 1975

Creating The Electric Energy Economy, L. G. Hauser

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

My remarks will be directed to four points:

First, that energy is the life blood of our economy, and that its use or conservation is far from a simple matter of personal habits of waste or frugality. In other words, the vital role energy plays in the production of goods and services should be distinguished from its use in their consumption.

Second, that our excessive dependence on our two scarcest energy resources -- oil and natural gas -- is the core of the energy problem, both U.S. and worldwide.

Third, that limiting our time horizon to this winter, next summer, …

Energy And Transportation Policy, James S. Sagner Jan 1975

Energy And Transportation Policy, James S. Sagner

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Energy shortages of recent years suggest a re-examination of national transportation policy. The lack of a coordinated approach to the solution of urban cogestion inhibits potential short-run responses to gasoline shortfalls. Longer-range policy, particularly in the context of severe financial constraints, must be carefully integrated with demonstrated patterns of urban travel and population and employment densities. Given these considerations, metropolitan areas now planning or constructing rapid rail facilities may be selecting inappropriate responses to the problem of urban access.

Energy, Environment And Incremental Decision Making, Jeff V. Conopask, Robert R. Reynolds Jr. Jan 1975

Energy, Environment And Incremental Decision Making, Jeff V. Conopask, Robert R. Reynolds Jr.

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

During the late 1960's and early 70's a variety of environmental/energy oriented legislation was enacted by the Congress. The most important of these acts, the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA), required that environmental impact statements be filed when various private and public activities have a potential for impacting man and his environment. (17) Impact statement requirements go beyond the currently practiced cost/benefit analysis, which is often just a production (direct) impact assessment. Heretofore, indirect or second round economic and social effects of consequence affecting other national goals were seldom counted.

Estimation Of Vehicle Transfer Functions., Leonard Francis Laskowski Iii Jan 1975

Estimation Of Vehicle Transfer Functions., Leonard Francis Laskowski Iii

Masters Theses

"This study is an investigation of several techniques used to estimate lateral control models for vehicles. The lateral control model that was identified related steering wheel angle input to lateral acceleration output. Two different order models were identified, one a biquadratic and the other a fourth order lowpass system with second order numerator dynamics. The two main approaches investigated were:

1) Regression analysis

2) Fast Fourier Transform Techniques These techniques were chosen because of their inherent immunity to noise.

A CSMP simulation of all identified models was then made to determine their validity. These checks were made using laboratory data …

Performance Evaluation Of Linear Systems Using The Fast Fourier Transform., Larry Leonard Lamano Jan 1975

Performance Evaluation Of Linear Systems Using The Fast Fourier Transform., Larry Leonard Lamano

Masters Theses

"In order for a computer simulation of a communication system to yield useful and meaningful results, a method for determining system performance is often essential. The computer postprocessor, described in this thesis, allows accurate determination of the mean-square-error induced by the system being simulated and the noise power at any point in the system.

Measurements of the mean-square-error induced by a system due to amplitude distortion, phase distortion, and amplitude and phase distortion, along with measurements of the power in a Gaussian noise waveform are performed. The values obtained using simulation are compared to the corresponding theoretical values in order …

Documentation Of A Short Circuit Program For Fault And Protection Studies., Alejandro Gonzales

Masters Theses

"For a given power system of no more than 100 buses and 400 line ends (source lines have one line end, radial lines have one line end and regular lines have two) a digital computer program is presented which determines the short circuit currents needed to implement a protective relaying design, The program uses the ZBUS method of analysis and calculates the currents at all buses, searches for the maximum and minimum values of the current contributed by the lines connected to the faulted bus under normal conditions (all lines in) and under single and double line outages. Maximum and …

A Design Of A High-Voltage Ionization Test Chamber., Jorge Anibal Chiriboga Jan 1975

A Design Of A High-Voltage Ionization Test Chamber., Jorge Anibal Chiriboga

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this thesis was the design and construction of a test ionization chamber which can be used in the teaching and research of several phenomena involving electrical breakdown of gaseous insulation materials.

Principal electrical discharge laws and effects, as well as their performance, are discussed as bases upon which the chamber was designed. The chamber presents the necessary characteristics for being used as a "multi-purpose" test chamber; in other words, it has the conditions for being used in the study of many electrical discharge phenomena"-- Abstract, p. ii

"A Master Data Bank (MDB) is used to prepare the data sets of large power system networks for later study. The MDB program has been developed to be compatible with data and formats used in load flow and short circuit studies. The MDB can store up to six sets of base case data. Magnetic disk storage is used as the storage medium to obtain adequate data storage and faster access to the data. The size of storage can be expanded by modification of statements in the MDB source program and job control statements. The data sets in the MDB can …

An Optimization Method For Scheduling Nuclear Reactor's Refueling St. Louis County, Missouri., Abbas Razavi Jan 1975

An Optimization Method For Scheduling Nuclear Reactor's Refueling St. Louis County, Missouri., Abbas Razavi

Masters Theses

"This paper describes a method to optimize the refueling schedule of the nuclear units. The method finds a mid-range (five to ten years) optimum refueling schedule by varying the refueling date of the nuclear units. The cycles of the nuclear units are the variable parameters, with fuel enrichment and quantity being fixed.

An empirical technique is used to calculate the nuclear fuel cost. Seasonal constraints are taken into account, and no nuclear unit will be shut down while another is down"-- Abstract, p. ii

Generalized Likelihood Signal Resolution, John A. Stuller

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This Paper Defines an M-Ary Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (MGLRT) that overcomes Root's Early Objection to the Application of Generalized Likelihood Ratio Testing to the Resolution of Correlated Signals. the Proposed Test Extends the Form of a Conventional Binary Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (GLRT) in a Manner that Permits a Generalization of the Minimax Properties of the Binary Test to the M-Hypotheses Case. When the Estimated Signals Are Orthogonal, the Test Reduces to a Sequence of Conventional Binary Tests Duplicating the Performance of a Narrow-Band Matched Filter Envelope-Detector Receiver. © 1975, IEEE. Computer Modeling Of The Statistical Properties Of Transionospheric Scintillation Channels, W. F. Deckelman, Rodger E. Ziemer Jan 1975

Computer Modeling Of The Statistical Properties Of Transionospheric Scintillation Channels, W. F. Deckelman, Rodger E. Ziemer

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This concise paper shows that a bandlimited bivariate-normal time series is a useful model for the envelope of scintillating radio signals traversing the ionosphere. A software model is presented whose generated time series is compared to an actual block of scintillation data. A comparison of computer-generated and actual scintillation data shows that the fade-duration distribution of the simulated data fits that of the actual data closely through proper choice of model parameters. Discrete And Diffuse Emission Following Two-Photon Excitation Of The E State In Molecular Iodine, D. L. Rousseau, P. F. Williams Dec 1974

Discrete And Diffuse Emission Following Two-Photon Excitation Of The E State In Molecular Iodine, D. L. Rousseau, P. F. Williams

P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications

We studied the fluorescence spectrum of E →B transitions in molecular iodine following two-photon absorption. Discrete re-emission lines terminating in B-state levels ranging from ν = 0 to the dissociation limit were observed in addition to a series of broad diffuse lines. These diffuse lines represent the first observation of Condon "internal diffraction” resulting from a single vibronic state, and therefore the variation of the bands directly displays the variation of the Franck-Condon factor.

Self-Consistent Dielectric Response Of A Quasi-One-Dimensional Metal At High Frequencies, P. F. Williams, Aaron N. Bloch Aug 1974

Self-Consistent Dielectric Response Of A Quasi-One-Dimensional Metal At High Frequencies, P. F. Williams, Aaron N. Bloch

P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications

We present the results of a calculation of the frequency- and wave-vector-dependent longitudinal dielectric function of a quasi-one-dimensional electron gas. The electrons are taken to be localized to the chains and both the tight-binding and free-electron extremes are considered along the chain axis. Local-field effects are included. Dispersion curves for plasmons and single-particle-excitation spectra are presented. We find that the plasmon modes are not Landau damped and that for long wavelengths these modes have eigenfrequencies ranging continuously from the usual three-dimensional plasma frequency for propagation along the chain axis to zero for propagation perpendicular to it. Finally, we discuss the …

Electronic Color Scanners, Kenneth Francis Hird Jun 1974

Electronic Color Scanners, Kenneth Francis Hird

Graduate Research Papers

Process color photography has been continually developing for many years. In fact, color printing techniques are still benefiting, through additional sophisticated requirements, and from a discovery made about 300 years ago. At that time Sir Isaac Newton, British scientist, mathematician • and philosopher, placed a glass prism in the path of a narrow beam of sunlight entering his room through a pinhole in an opaque window shade. He determined that ordinary white light is a mixture of colored lights.

Unfortunately, in practice, ideal pigments for three-color inks do not exist and this impasse greatly complicates the job for the photo-processor. …

Steady State And Dynamic Performance Of Anisotropic Reluctance Motor, S. Chandrasekhara Rao May 1974

Steady State And Dynamic Performance Of Anisotropic Reluctance Motor, S. Chandrasekhara Rao

Theses

The paper deals with a special type of reluctance motor called Anisotropic rotor reluctance motor. As the name implies, advantage is taken of the internal anisotropy of the rotor magnetic structure. Axially laminated grain oriented silicon steel is used in the rotor. This unconventional configuration of assembly of rotor laminations results in a high ratio of direct axis to quadrature axis reluctance. Compared to the conventional reluctance motor, pull out torque of more than three times and a power factor as high as in an induction motor is obtained. Several motors of ratings up to 60 HP. were built and …

Asynchronous Logic Design With Flip-Flop Constraints, David Franklin Cox May 1974

Asynchronous Logic Design With Flip-Flop Constraints, David Franklin Cox

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Some techniques are presented to permit the implementation of asynchronous sequential circuits using standard flip-flops. An algorithm is presented for the RS flip-flop, and it is shown that any flow table may be realized using the algorithm (the flow table is assumed to be realizable using standard logic gates). The approach is shown to be directly applicable to synchronous circuits, and transition flip-flops (JK, D, and T) are analyzed using the ideas developed. Constraints are derived for the flow tables to meet to be realizable using transition flip-flops in asynchronous situations, and upper and lower bounds on the number of …

Resonance Fluorescence And Resonance Raman Scattering: Lifetimes In Molecular Iodine, P. F. Williams, D. L. Rousseau, D. H. Dworetsky Feb 1974

Resonance Fluorescence And Resonance Raman Scattering: Lifetimes In Molecular Iodine, P. F. Williams, D. L. Rousseau, D. H. Dworetsky

P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications

We report a significantly shortened scattering lifetime in molecular iodine when the frequency of a single-mode 5145-Å incident laser is tuned away from resonance with a discrete transition. This observation of a shortened scattering time is indicative of what has been conventionally called a Raman process. Off-resonance lifetime measurements, as reported here, may provide a means of determining the relative contribution to the absorption line-width of homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening.

An Economical-Digital Interface For Multiplex Recording Of Analog Signals, Samuel Knoles George Jan 1974

An Economical-Digital Interface For Multiplex Recording Of Analog Signals, Samuel Knoles George

Masters Theses

"In measuring and evaluating performance of an automobile and driver combination it is necessary to record data from the vehicle and driver while both are in the field.

The University of Missouri - Rolla Transportation Research Program performs this type of evaluation. The present method of recording data in the field is with a large, bulky, and somewhat fragile strip chart recorder.

The digital recording interface described in this paper is designed to permit replacement of the strip chart recorder with an audio tape recorder. The interface will allow simultaneous recording of two analog channels which may be reproduced as …

An Asynchronous Circuit Design Language (Acdl), Gregory M. Bednar, James H. Tracey

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This correspondence describes a special purpose Asynchronous Circuit Design Language (ACDL) for specifying the terminal behavior of asynchronous sequential circuits. The language is a valuable tool for formalizing and documenting asynchronous designs, as well as providing a user interface to a completely automated synthesis system. The language includes many special features which permit quick and precise specification of terminal behavior and is best suited for problems that are currently being described informally by word statements.
