Discrimination Of Volcano Activity And Mountain-Associated Waves Using Infrasonic Data And A Backpropagation Neural Network, Fredric M. Ham, Thomas A. Leeney, Heather M. Canady, Joseph C. Wheeler

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

An integral part of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty monitoring is an international infrasonic monitoring network that is capable of detecting and verifying nuclear explosions. Reliable detection of such events must be made from data that may contain other sources of infrasonic phenomena. Infrasonic waves can also result from volcanic eruptions, mountain associated waves, auroral waves, earthquakes, meteors, avalanches, severe weather, quarry blasting, high-speed aircraft, gravity waves, and microbaroms. This paper shows that a feedforward multi-layer neural network discriminator, trained by backpropagation, is capable of distinguishing between two unique infrasonic events recorded from single station recordings with a relatively …

Cascaded Neural Networks For Sequenced Propagation Estimation, Multiuser Detection, And Adaptive Radio Resource Control Of Third-Generation Wireless Networks For Multimedia Services, William S. Hortos

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

A hybrid neural network approach is presented to estimate radio propagation characteristics and multiuser interference and to evaluate their combined impact on throughput, latency and information loss in third-generation (3G) wireless networks. The latter three performance parameters influence the quality of service (QoS) for multimedia services under consideration for 3G networks. These networks, based on a hierarchical architecture of overlaying macrocells on top of micro- and picoells, are planned to operate in mobile urban and indoor environments with service demands emanating from circuit-switched, packetswitched and satellite-based traffic sources. Candidate radio interfaces for these networks employ a form of wideband CDMA …

Constructions Of Generalized Concatenated Codes And Their Trellis-Based Decoding Complexity, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Toru Fujiwara, Tadao Kasami, Shu Lin Mar 1999

Constructions Of Generalized Concatenated Codes And Their Trellis-Based Decoding Complexity, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Toru Fujiwara, Tadao Kasami, Shu Lin

Faculty Publications

In this correspondence, constructions of generalized concatenated (GC) codes with good rates and distances are presented. Some of the proposed GC codes have simpler trellis omplexity than Euclidean geometry (EG), Reed–Muller (RM), or Bose–Chaudhuri–Hocquenghem (BCH) codes of approximately the same rates and minimum distances, and in addition can be decoded with trellis-based multistage decoding up to their minimum distances. Several codes of the same length, dimension, and minimum distance as the best linear codes known are constructed.

Locally Optimal, Buffer-Constrained Motion Estimation And Mode Selection For Video Sequences, C. B. Peel, Scott E. Budge, K. Liang, C.-M. Huang Mar 1999

Locally Optimal, Buffer-Constrained Motion Estimation And Mode Selection For Video Sequences, C. B. Peel, Scott E. Budge, K. Liang, C.-M. Huang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We describe a method of using a Lagrange multiplier to make a locally optimal trade off between rate and distortion in the motion search for video sequences, while maintaining a constant bit rate channel. Simulation of this method shows that it gives up to 3.5 dB PSNR improvement in a high motion sequence. A locally rate-distortion (R-D) optimal mode selection mechanism is also described. This method also gives significant quality benefit over the nominal method. Though the benefit of these techniques is significant when used separately, when the optimal mode selection is combined with the R-D optimal motion search, it …

Sliding Mode Measurement Feedback Control For Antilock Braking Systems, Cem Unsal, Pushkin Kachroo Mar 1999

Sliding Mode Measurement Feedback Control For Antilock Braking Systems, Cem Unsal, Pushkin Kachroo

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

We describe a nonlinear observer-based design for control of vehicle traction that is important in providing safety and obtaining desired longitudinal vehicle motion. First, a robust sliding mode controller is designed to maintain the wheel slip at any given value. Simulations show that longitudinal traction controller is capable of controlling the vehicle with parameter deviations and disturbances. The direct state feedback is then replaced with nonlinear observers to estimate the vehicle velocity from the output of the system (i.e., wheel velocity). The nonlinear model of the system is shown locally observable. The effects and drawbacks of the extended Kalman filters …

An Empirical Prediction Model Of The Performance Impacts Of Material Tolerances In Frequency Selective Surfaces Using The Monte Carlo Method, Matthew D. Craig Mar 1999

An Empirical Prediction Model Of The Performance Impacts Of Material Tolerances In Frequency Selective Surfaces Using The Monte Carlo Method, Matthew D. Craig

Theses and Dissertations

Standard computational tools predicting frequency selective surface (FSS) performance model periodic structures as an infinite-by-infinite array of perfectly placed elements with perfect, identical dimensions, and with dielectric layers of uniform thickness and material composition. These models do not address perturbations caused by manufacturing tolerances of elements and dielectric layers, nor do they address edge effects caused by finite-by-finite dimensional arrays. The Monte Carlo Method was used to determine the effects of random variations in element dimension, placement, dielectric thickness, and dielectric material on FSS performance. A full-factorial experimental design was applied, and eight hundred twenty-five unique finite arrays of elements …

Non Co-Operative Detection Of Lpi/Lpd Signals Via Cyclic Spectral Analysis, Andrew M. Gillman Mar 1999

Non Co-Operative Detection Of Lpi/Lpd Signals Via Cyclic Spectral Analysis, Andrew M. Gillman

Theses and Dissertations

This research proposes and evaluates a novel technique for detecting LPI/LPD communication signals using a digital receiver primarily designed to detect radar signals, such as a Radar Warning Receiver (RWR) or an Electronic Support Measures (ESM) receiver. The proposed Cyclic Spectrum Analysis (CSA) receiver is a robust detector that takes advantage of the spectral correlation properties of second-order cyclostationary signals. A computationally efficient algorithm is used to estimate the Spectral Correlation Function (SCF). Using state-of-the-art FFT processing, it is expected that the proposed CSA receiver architecture could estimate the entire cyclic spectrum m approximately 0.6 ms. The estimate is then …

Target Pose Estimation From Radar Data Using Adaptive Networks, Andrew W. Learn Mar 1999

Target Pose Estimation From Radar Data Using Adaptive Networks, Andrew W. Learn

Theses and Dissertations

his research investigates and extends recent work by J.C. Principe at the University of Florida in target pose estimation using adaptive networks. First, Principe's technique is successfully extended to estimate both azimuth and elevation using SAR images. A network trained and tested using MSTAR data yields mean errors of less than six degrees in azimuth and five degrees in elevation. Second, the technique is applied to high-range resolution radar (HRR) signatures. Ground target (azimuth only) testing yields mean errors of less than 11 degrees for most classes. Air target testing for networks trained and tested on the same aircraft class …

A Trade-Off Analysis For Quality Of Service In Real-Time Voice Over Ip, Tuncel Altunbasak Mar 1999

A Trade-Off Analysis For Quality Of Service In Real-Time Voice Over Ip, Tuncel Altunbasak

Theses and Dissertations

During the past several years, there has been a significant increase in interest in the use of packetized audio over packet-switched networks due to economic and technical feasibility. However, distribution of real-time voice traffic is basically different from traditional reliable data transfer since continuous voice is sensitive to end-to-end delays and variations of delays. The distribution of continuous voice across a packet-switched network requires consideration of encoding schemas, end-to-end network delays, delay variations, and packet loss, all of which significantly affect the playback quality at the receiving side. There is a trade-off among these factors that affects the quality of …

Performance Analysis Of Tcp Enhancements In Satellite Data Networks, Ren H. Broyles Mar 1999

Performance Analysis Of Tcp Enhancements In Satellite Data Networks, Ren H. Broyles

Theses and Dissertations

This research examines two proposed enhancements to the well-known Transport Control Protocol (TCP) in the presence of noisy communication links. The Multiple Pipes protocol is an application-level adaptation of the standard TCP protocol, where several TCP links cooperate to transfer data. The Space Communication Protocol Standard - Transport Protocol (SCPS-TP) modifies TCP to optimize performance in a satellite environment. While SCPS-TP has inherent advantages that allow it to deliver data more rapidly than Multiple Pipes, the protocol, when optimized for operation in a high-error environment, is not compatible with legacy TCP systems, and requires changes to the TCP specification. This …

A Performance Analysis Of Dynamic Routing Algorithms In An Iridium-Like Low Earth Orbit Satellite System, Stephen R. Pratt

Theses and Dissertations

This research presents a first of its kind comparative analysis of the Extended Bellman-Ford and Darting algorithms, using the Iridium low earth orbit (LEO) satellite system configuration for the simulation environment. The algorithms are compared to one another via discrete-event computer simulation and evaluated based on their ability to route real-time voice communications under low, medium, and high network loading conditions. The algorithms' ability to meet real-time voice constraints is evaluated with a full and degraded satellite constellation using an algorithmic satellite removal method. The investigation results indicate that both algorithms are suitable for use in a LEO environment and …

Incorporating Scene Mosaics As Visual Indexes Into Uav Video Imagery Databases, Timothy I. Page Mar 1999

Incorporating Scene Mosaics As Visual Indexes Into Uav Video Imagery Databases, Timothy I. Page

Theses and Dissertations

The rise of large digital video archives has strengthened the need for more efficient ways of indexing video files an accessing the information contained in them. Reconnaissance platforms, such as the Predator UAV, are contributing thousands of hours of video footage that require analysis, storage, and retrieval. A process is proposed for converting a video stream into a series of mosaic and selected still images that provide complete coverage of the original video. The video mosaic images can be utilized as visual indexes into a video database. In addition, mosaic images contain information from an entire sequence of video frames …

Analysis Of The Applicability Of Video Segmentation To Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Surveillance Video, Bradley L. Pyburn

Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this research is to determine if applying edge detection segmentation (proposed by Ramin Zabih, Justin Miller, and Kevin Mai) to Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) video footage can provide meaningful segments for database storage and retrieval. The edge detection segmentation algorithm is applied to fifty-four UAV video sequences containing visual effects such as abrupt camera changes, camera zooms, motion (rapid and gradual), and cloud cover while varying the frame rate from 5 fps to 30 fps. An analysis of the results is performed to compare actual versus expected outcomes, similar sequences, and scenes with motion, along with explaining …

Integrated Ups/Ins Precision Approach Landing With M3ae Interference Avoidance, Stephan H. Chastain Mar 1999

Integrated Ups/Ins Precision Approach Landing With M3ae Interference Avoidance, Stephan H. Chastain

Theses and Dissertations

Several past research efforts have developed methods to take advantage of Global Positioning System (UPS) positioning and apply it to a precision landing system (PLS). There have been proposals to phase out the current Instrument Landing System (ILS) in favor of a more cost-efficient and effective system. Accomplishments have been made in detailing a system implementing an INS aided with differential UPS, a UPS pseudolite, and a radar altimeter to handle the critical PLS requirements. This research applies the newly developed Modified Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation (M3AE) architecture in an attempt to enhance the performance of a PLS in an …

Trade-Off Analysis Of Communications Capabilities Of Inter-Satellite Links, Andrew J. Feltman Mar 1999

Trade-Off Analysis Of Communications Capabilities Of Inter-Satellite Links, Andrew J. Feltman

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis designs, develops, and uses software Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) to analyze the communications capabilities of Radio Frequency (RF) Inter-Satellite Links (ISLs). The GUIs are geared towards analyzing the proposed ISLs of the Discoverer II program, but are general enough to permit analysis of any free-space RF ISLs. Discoverer II is a demonstration program of low-earth orbiting satellites and is primarily focused on satellite-based sensor technology. This thesis shows RF ISLs can meet the program requirement to broadcast the sensor data back to CONUS in near-real-time. The GUIs operate in real-time and explore trade-offs in the communications capability by …

Graphical User Interface And Microprocessor Control Enhancement Of A Pseudorandom Code Generator, John M. Kos Mar 1999

Graphical User Interface And Microprocessor Control Enhancement Of A Pseudorandom Code Generator, John M. Kos

Theses and Dissertations

Modern digital communication techniques often require the generation of pseudorandom numbers or sequences. The ability to quickly and easily produce various codes such as maximal length codes, Gold codes, Jet Propulsion Laboratory ranging codes, syncopated codes, and non-linear codes in a laboratory environment is essential. This thesis addresses the issue of providing automated computer control to previously built, manually controlled hardware incorporating the Stanford Telecom STEL-1032 Pseudo-Random Number (PRN) Coder. By incorporating a microcontroller into existing hardware, the STEL-1032 can now be conveniently controlled from a MATLAB Graphical User Interface (GUI). The user can quickly create, save, and recall various …

Low Grazing Angle Terrain Backscattering Coefficient Generator, William N. O'Connor Mar 1999

Low Grazing Angle Terrain Backscattering Coefficient Generator, William N. O'Connor

Theses and Dissertations

A near-horizon probabilistic terrain backscatter coefficient generator is introduced, combining modified sea-state curves with Weibull-type probability density functions. A total of nine terrain type classifications (soils & rocks, trees, grasses, shrubs, short vegetation, roads, urban areas, dry snow, and wet snow) are supported, for seven radar bands (L, S, C, X, Ku, Ka, and W), and both linear (HH, VV) and cross (HV, VH) polarizations. The Weibull functions are based on measured sigma and match the published data. The functions also provide a probabilistic nature to the generator. Modified sea state curves are used in place of the Weibull functions …

Antenna Gain Enhancement Using A Photonic Band Gap Reflector, Karl C. Schloer Mar 1999

Antenna Gain Enhancement Using A Photonic Band Gap Reflector, Karl C. Schloer

Theses and Dissertations

Scientists have long known that periodic structures can filter electromagnetic (EM) waves. In the last decade, extension of one- and two-dimensionally periodic structures into a third periodic dimension has produced photonic band gap (PBG) structures. A PBG structure is characterized by its omnidirectional stop band at a set of frequencies determined by the structure's periodicity and permittivity. In the present research, we investigate such a structure as an antenna reflector. We aim to develop a modeling approach that provides accurate computations of PBG behavior without relying on massively parallel processing. We also construct and measure the bulk reflection and transmission …

Ultra-Wideband Tem Horns, Transient Arrays And Exponential Curves: A Fdtd Look, Troy S. Utton Mar 1999

Ultra-Wideband Tem Horns, Transient Arrays And Exponential Curves: A Fdtd Look, Troy S. Utton

Theses and Dissertations

This research investigates the possibility of applying exponentially curved conducting plates to single-element Transverse Electromagnetic (TEM) horns and their transient arrays to enhance the UWB characteristics already experienced by these radiators. The first part of this study demonstrates the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method's ability to duplicate experimental data, and establishes the baseline models used throughout the remainder of the research. The baseline models consist of the typical flat-triangle shaped conducting plates. The exponential taper models incorporate the exponential curves in the height, the width, and both the height and width directions. One, two- and four-element baseline configurations are compared to …

Application Of The Finite Element Method To The Scattering Of A Two-Dimensional, Semi-Infinite Periodic Structure, Perry N. Villanueva Mar 1999

Application Of The Finite Element Method To The Scattering Of A Two-Dimensional, Semi-Infinite Periodic Structure, Perry N. Villanueva

Theses and Dissertations

Infinite periodic structures have been studied heavily because of their efficient filtering capabilities. They generally exhibit sharp frequency roll-offs at the frequency band of interest. In the RF region of the electromagnetic spectrum, periodic structures find applications such as radomes and photonic bandgap materials. Most studies have been done with infinitely periodic arrays because it is convenient to collapse an infinite array into one representative period using Floquet Analysis. Truncating an infinite array introduces an edge and invalidates Floquet analysis over the entire array. This thesis formulates a Finite Element Method (FEM) solution of a semi-infinite periodic array consisting of …

Analysis Of Radio Frequency Interference Effects On A Modern Coarse Acquisition Code Global Positioning System (Gps) Receiver, Kenneth D. Johnston Mar 1999

Analysis Of Radio Frequency Interference Effects On A Modern Coarse Acquisition Code Global Positioning System (Gps) Receiver, Kenneth D. Johnston

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the performance of a twelve channel Standard Positioning Service (SPS) based (Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver using an eight state Kalman filter in a hostile radio frequency (RF) environment and to develop instructional tools for teaching RF interference on GPS receivers. The two types of jamming signals generated included Continuous Wave (CW) and Swept CW. Actual GPS and jamming signals were used in the research. The signals received from GPS satellites exhibit a Doppler shift which vary between approximately plus six Kilohertz. The Doppler shift frequency can be reasonably predicted for a …

Long-Term Memory Motion-Compensated Prediction, Thomas Wiegand, Xiaozheng Zhang, Bernd Girod Feb 1999

Long-Term Memory Motion-Compensated Prediction, Thomas Wiegand, Xiaozheng Zhang, Bernd Girod

Electrical Engineering

Long-term memory motion-compensated prediction extends the spatial displacement vector utilized in block-based hybrid video coding by a variable time delay permitting the use of more frames than the previously decoded one for motion compensated prediction. The long-term memory covers several seconds of decoded frames at the encoder and decoder. The use of multiple frames for motion compensation in most cases provides significantly improved prediction gain. The variable time delay has to be transmitted as side information requiring an additional bit rate which may be prohibitive when the size of the long-term memory becomes too large. Therefore, we control the bit …

Fundamentals Of Linear State Space Systems, John Bay Jan 1999

Fundamentals Of Linear State Space Systems, John Bay

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Scholarship

This book addresses two primary deficiencies in the linear systems textbook market: a lack of development of state space methods from the basic principles and a lack of pedagogical focus. The book uses the geometric intuition provided by vector space analysis to develop in a very sequential manner all the essential topics in linear state system theory that a senior or beginning graduate student should know. It does this in an ordered, readable manner, with examples drawn from several areas of engineering. Because it derives state space methods from linear algebra and vector spaces and ties all the topics together …

Sonar Three-Dimensional Image Formation For Underwater Vehicular Collision Avoidance, Gary Robert Boucher Jan 1999

Sonar Three-Dimensional Image Formation For Underwater Vehicular Collision Avoidance, Gary Robert Boucher

Doctoral Dissertations

The last ten years have shown a marked increase in research into Autonomous Underwater Vehicles. A key component of this research is the ability to “look” ahead of the vehicle's projected path and translate active sonar returns into three-dimensional (3-D) computer data structures used to navigate and avoid obstacles. This need to avoid obstacles is also common to other underwater vehicles including submersibles.

Of special interest to this research is the “Occupancy Grid Framework.” This technique divides the forward looking sonar field into cells. These cells can be maintained either in spherical or cartesian coordinate systems.

This research demonstrates a …

Multiple Stochastic Learning Automata For Vehicle Path Control In An Automated Highway System, Cem Unsal, Pushkin Kachroo, John S. Bay Jan 1999

Multiple Stochastic Learning Automata For Vehicle Path Control In An Automated Highway System, Cem Unsal, Pushkin Kachroo, John S. Bay

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

This paper suggests an intelligent controller for an automated vehicle planning its own trajectory based on sensor and communication data. The intelligent controller is designed using the learning stochastic automata theory. Using the data received from on-board sensors, two automata (one for lateral actions, one for longitudinal actions) can learn the best possible action to avoid collisions. The system has the advantage of being able to work in unmodeled stochastic environments, unlike adaptive control methods or expert systems. Simulations for simultaneous lateral and longitudinal control of a vehicle provide encouraging results
