A Comparative Study Of The Reponses By Varying Socioeconomic Groups On General Knowledge And Categorization Tasks, Margo I. Keller

Dissertations and Theses

This study sought to determine if there are any "cultural" or economic level patterns of behavior in responding to tasks involving categorizing pictures and recalling general knowledge. The Daberon School Headiness Device (1972), which contains subtests for general knowledge and categorization, was used to assess four groups of children: 1) lower-SES white, 2) lower-SES black, 3) middle-SES white, and 4) middle-SES black. This study involved thirty black and thirty white children between the ages of five years and five years, eleven months. All subjects were screened to determine race, age, auditory acuity, speech intelligibility, subject cooperation, and socioeconomic status (SES). …

The Teaching Of History In The Secondary Schools Of Australia, Richard Townley Blaine Feb 1975

The Teaching Of History In The Secondary Schools Of Australia, Richard Townley Blaine

Dissertations and Theses

Australian students terminating their secondary education with completion of Form Four provided the major stimulus during the last decade for new curriculum developments in an organized study of man. To provide these fifteen-year old pupils with the necessary exposure to life for social adjustment underscored the debate between many social scientists and history teachers on the ability of their respective subject's focus.

Where in the middle of the last decade Australia found herself in the middle of a communication revolution, many students, ending their educations during mid-adolescence, did not finish the normal sequence of history courses. History's dominance in the …

The Relation Between A Teacher Evaluation Checklist And Actual Student Course Gains, Thomas Michael Ozee Jan 1975

The Relation Between A Teacher Evaluation Checklist And Actual Student Course Gains, Thomas Michael Ozee

Masters Theses

The relationship between student gain, as measured by pre and post achievement test measures, and a teacher evaluation checklist, the Student Evaluation of College Teaching Behaviors Instrument (SECTB), was examined in an attempt to validate the eight factors in the SECTB. Sixty seven students in three sections of introductory psychology were measured on both instruments. Results of this study do not support a relationship between student gain and the SECTB. The only significant correlate of gain was a factor measuring nature of presentation (r = -.468) and this correlation was found in only one section. In this section there was …

The Effect Of Attending Behavior Training Upon Learning, Martha Sue Peden Dec 1974

The Effect Of Attending Behavior Training Upon Learning, Martha Sue Peden

Dissertations and Theses

Various studies have been implemented concerning the physiological and psychological components of attending behavior, particularly in the area of the exceptional child. Little has been done, however, to develop specific behavioral definitions of attending behavior and to incorporate these into treatment-based research programs involving normal children attending a regular public school.

The purpose of this investigation was to discover if children from a regular public elementary school who are deficient in attending behavior skills can be taught these skills in a short-term behavior modification program and to determine if the skills thus learned facilitate learning within the regular classroom setting.

At the present time we are all dissatisfied with intelligence testing. And we have been so, more or less, for the past twenty years. Tests have been criticized by researchers involved in experimental studies of intelligence, by administrators concerned with the applications of intelligence tests, and most importantly, by the users of these tests. So you may well ask 'Why haven't test constructors done -something about these criticisms?' And of course there is no really crushing retort to this. However the problem that has faced, and still faces, people trying to construct intelligence tests is the very diversity of the …

Recommendations include comparison of experimental program with other than the basal reading approach and suggestions for additional research.

A Study Of The Effect Of Varied Amounts Of Oral Reading On Reading Comprehension In A First Grade Classroom, Melinda Anne Dickson Jan 1974

A Study Of The Effect Of Varied Amounts Of Oral Reading On Reading Comprehension In A First Grade Classroom, Melinda Anne Dickson

All Master's Theses

In this study an experimental group was compared with a control group to determine what effect, if any, varying amounts of oral reading would have on the comprehension scores of first grade pupils. The two groups received identical reading instruction with the expectation of oral reading. The control group read aloud twice as much as the experimental group during each oral reading session. Using standard statistical procedure no significant difference was found between the two groups. Therefore, a reduction of the amount of oral reading could be initiated into the reading program described while still maintaining an acceptable level of …

Forty-two of forty-four t tests showed the program had …

A Study Of The Academic Effect Of Non-Promotion In Yakima Elementary Schools, James R. Seamons Jan 1974

A Study Of The Academic Effect Of Non-Promotion In Yakima Elementary Schools, James R. Seamons

All Master's Theses

The purpose of this study is to determine if there exists any statistical evidence that supports the commonly held belief that retaining students in grade school does not improve academic performance.

The cumulative records of all children retained, who met the criteria outlined in Chapter III, were examined. Their academic grades were recorded in nine subject areas. Improved performance during the retained year over the previous ones and during the years after retention over the years before retention, was very significant. This improvement was maintained in the years after retention.

An analysis of the data gives strong evidence supporting retention …
