Assessing Critical Thinking Processes In The Gifted: Predicting Gre Analytical Performance From Watson-Glaser Results, Susie Garrott Aug 1985

Assessing Critical Thinking Processes In The Gifted: Predicting Gre Analytical Performance From Watson-Glaser Results, Susie Garrott

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the constructs measured by the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal and the Graduate Record Examination Analytical Scale in "gifted" adolescents 15 to 17 years of age. There were three hypotheses addressed in this study: 1) "gifted" adolescents would be able to think critically as measured by college level norms when measured by the Watson-Glaser and the GRE-Analytical; 2) significant differences would exist between different levels of gifted populations; and 3) a factor or group of factors of the Watson-Glaser subscales would significantly predict performance on the GRE-Analytical Scale.

The Watson-Glaser …

A Summary Of Experiences In An Administrative Internship With The West Ottawa Public School System, Randal E. Busscher

Masters Theses

The objective of my internship was to become familiar with the role and duties of a K-12 school principal. I was exposed to a wide variety of experiences. Those experiences, through readings, personal interviews, and group meetings are the focus of my internship. My experiences included working with the Challenge Program, which is for the gifted and talented students, and helping to re-word some of the present job descriptions. I also assisted with the realignment of boundary lines and research on teacher evaluations. Absence policies and junior high level programs were also investigated.

The Over-The-Hill Gang: A Problem For All Seasons, James E. Roever Aug 1985

The Over-The-Hill Gang: A Problem For All Seasons, James E. Roever

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay examines faculty development as an ongoing concern that extends across all career stages rather than being limited to senior or declining faculty. The author argues that prevention is the most effective response to professional stagnation and emphasizes the importance of rigorous recruitment, clear evaluation criteria, and early support for professional involvement. Administrative strategies described include travel funding, released time for research, faculty exchanges, sabbaticals, and incentive programs designed to encourage continuous growth. Particular attention is given to tenure review as a critical moment for preventing long term non productivity. The essay also evaluates approaches to addressing stagnation among …

Promoting Vitality After Tenure, John Lee Jellicorse, James G. Tilley Aug 1985

Promoting Vitality After Tenure, John Lee Jellicorse, James G. Tilley

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article analyzes the causes of declining productivity among tenured faculty and outlines strategies for sustaining long term professional vitality. The authors identify a critical period following the award of tenure during which faculty may experience diminished motivation due to unclear goals, institutional incentives focused narrowly on pre tenure performance, and inconsistent evaluation of teaching, research, and service. Structural problems such as outdated workload models, poorly defined faculty development policies, and reliance on differentiated staffing intensify the risk of stagnation. Drawing on motivational theory, life span development research, and ERG theory, the authors argue that faculty growth depends on satisfying …

Megatrends In Speech Communication: Theory And Research, Stephen W. Littlejohn Aug 1985

Megatrends In Speech Communication: Theory And Research, Stephen W. Littlejohn

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article identifies broad shifts that the author terms megatrends in the development of speech communication theory and research. These megatrends refer to large scale movements that encompass smaller, related changes across the field. The essay outlines five such trends. The first is an intensified role for speech communication in bridging divisions among subfields, particularly the separation between interpersonal and mass communication that has emerged in the wider interdisciplinary study of communication. The second is a growing concern with policy implications, reflected in increased attention to social issues, applied research, and the needs of special populations. The third trend is …

In Defense Of The Communication Arts And Sciences As A Liberal Art: An Introduction, Philip Emmert Aug 1985

In Defense Of The Communication Arts And Sciences As A Liberal Art: An Introduction, Philip Emmert

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This introductory essay outlines the purpose and context of a collection of position papers defending the place of the communication arts and sciences within liberal arts colleges. The author notes that departments in areas such as mass communication, speech communication, speech and hearing sciences, and theatre have increasingly been required to justify budgets, faculty lines, and even their continued existence amid broader financial pressures in higher education. Because these fields are commonly housed in liberal arts units, contributors were asked to articulate the intellectual foundations and educational value that warrant their inclusion in that context. Four scholars prepared essays addressing …

A Matter Of Choice, Frank E. X. Dance Aug 1985

A Matter Of Choice, Frank E. X. Dance

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay advances a theoretical argument linking liberal education to the human capacity for symbolic choice. It begins by contrasting the restrictive condition of slavery with the freedom made possible through intentional decision making, framing liberal education as a process that fosters autonomy rather than vocational preparation. The discussion traces the historical emergence of symbolic capacity as the defining feature of human communication, distinguishing symbols from signs and emphasizing the role of spoken language in enabling decentering from immediate circumstance. Through this process, individuals develop self awareness, the ability to conceptualize alternatives, and the capacity for deliberate choice. The essay …

Speech/Language Pathology And Audiology: A Justifiable Anomaly Within A College Of Arts And Sciences?, Fred D. Minifie Aug 1985

Speech/Language Pathology And Audiology: A Justifiable Anomaly Within A College Of Arts And Sciences?, Fred D. Minifie

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay defends the place of speech language pathology and audiology within colleges of arts and sciences by arguing that the discipline’s academic legitimacy derives from its scientific study of human communication rather than its professional training functions. The author traces tensions between broad liberal arts missions and programs perceived as narrowly vocational, noting that clinical training alone cannot justify departmental status in a university setting. Instead, the field’s essential contribution lies in advancing knowledge about normal and disordered communication and in grounding clinical practice in research based understanding. The discussion critiques programs that emphasize service delivery at the expense …

Liberal Arts Education And The Communication Arts And Sciences Discipline, Philip Emmert Aug 1985

Liberal Arts Education And The Communication Arts And Sciences Discipline, Philip Emmert

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay examines the relationship between the communication arts and sciences and the goals of liberal arts education, arguing that the discipline’s distinct contribution lies in its focus on the spoken word and the cognitive and behavioral changes that accompany its study. The author reviews the historical roots of American liberal arts education and notes its longstanding orientation toward preparing students to function effectively within their environments. He contends that contemporary discussions often overlook this practical heritage. Responding to earlier essays in the collection, the author argues that while theatre, mass communication, communication disorders, and speech communication each offer persuasive …

Evaluating The Teaching Component Of The College Or University Director's Work, Bob Yowell Aug 1985

Evaluating The Teaching Component Of The College Or University Director's Work, Bob Yowell

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay argues that directing in academic theatre constitutes a significant form of teaching and should be evaluated as such. Drawing on progressive educational philosophy, the author emphasizes that directing aligns with long standing principles of learning by doing, problem centered inquiry, collaboration, and democratic engagement. The essay parallels William Heard Kilpatrick’s characteristics of good teaching with the iterative processes of theatrical production, demonstrating that directors initiate activities, plan and execute creative work, guide problem solving, facilitate critique, and help students reflect on their learning. The discussion proposes criteria for evaluating teaching in directing, including preparation, motivation, clarity of task …

Priorities In The Evaluation Of A Director's Work, Thomas P. Cooke Aug 1985

Priorities In The Evaluation Of A Director's Work, Thomas P. Cooke

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay examines the complexities of evaluating the teaching component of academic directing and cautions against creating formal instruments that may inadvertently undermine directors’ artistic work or tenure prospects. The author notes that production participation constitutes an intense educational experience, yet the informal and intuitive nature of rehearsal processes makes teaching difficult to measure using objective criteria. While creative accomplishment has recently gained recognition as a valid form of scholarly contribution, the essay warns that adding another evaluative category may weaken that progress by implying that directing must also be judged as teaching. The discussion argues that directors cannot simultaneously …

The Student Perspective On Evaluating Teaching Effectiveness, Donald H. Wulff, Ann Q. Staton-Spicer, Carla W. Hess, Jody D. Nyquist Aug 1985

The Student Perspective On Evaluating Teaching Effectiveness, Donald H. Wulff, Ann Q. Staton-Spicer, Carla W. Hess, Jody D. Nyquist

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines student perceptions of teaching evaluation methods by comparing end of course student ratings with the Small Group Instructional Diagnosis procedure. Using data from 140 undergraduates in communication courses, the study analyzes Likert scale responses and open ended comments to assess the perceived importance, uses, and preferred formats of evaluation. Factor analysis indicates that students view teaching evaluation as important but express uncertainty about how results are used and whether instructors act on feedback. Students favored methods that allow written comments, provide opportunities to offer constructive suggestions, and ensure anonymity. They identified weaknesses in end of course ratings, …

The Over-The-Hill-Gang And The Faculty Exchange, Patti P. Gillespie Aug 1985

The Over-The-Hill-Gang And The Faculty Exchange, Patti P. Gillespie

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay examines how academic departments can sustain the productivity of tenured faculty and address cases of declining intellectual engagement. The author distinguishes between preventing stagnation and responding to existing non productivity, arguing that clear expectations, meaningful rewards, and active administrative support are central to maintaining faculty vitality. Causes of entrenched inactivity range from personal circumstances to departmental climates that overlook or marginalize certain faculty. The essay critiques extreme proposals for addressing such problems and instead advances faculty exchange as a practical mechanism for both prevention and revitalization. In a faculty exchange, two institutions temporarily trade faculty members for a …

On Avoiding The Special Niche, Paul A. Distler Aug 1985

On Avoiding The Special Niche, Paul A. Distler

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay critiques the common administrative practice of removing unproductive faculty from departmental life by assigning them to isolated roles or special niches and argues that such actions avoid rather than solve the underlying problem. The author contends that faculty who appear stagnant are often healthy individuals displaced by shifts in departmental culture, new techniques they have not assimilated, or the force of more energetic colleagues. Administrators share responsibility when inadequate hiring or lenient tenure decisions allow individuals to enter or remain in roles unsuited to their abilities. Effective response requires that the faculty member genuinely desire revitalization and that …
