The Impact Of The Worked Example Modality And Sequencing On Achievement When Self-Learning Complex Multimedia Math Problems, Daniah Alabbasi, Haya Alwehaiby, Abeda Alenezy
International Journal for Research in Education
The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of using multimedia to teach complex math problems. It is designed based on the worked example principle with varied modality and sequencing and tested its efficacy on high school students’ achievement. In order to implement the research idea, high school students were randomly assigned to four groups that were self-taught by four different educational programs. The results of the study showed that there are statistically significant differences (α0.05) between the four groups' mathematical mean scores in the post-test. This means that the modality of displaying the worked example (sound, without …

Creating Laboratories Of Practice For Scholarly-Practitioners: How Leaders Learn Through Action Research Of Clinical Supervision, Ian Mette, Teresa Starrett
Journal of Practitioner Research
The purpose of our work the past three years has been to understand how clinically rich laboratories of practice can be created that allow aspiring administrators hands-on experiences in order to learn how to provide effective supervision to teachers. Through our cross-university collaboration, class members in our Educational Supervision courses have been provided an action learning structure and experiential learning opportunities to develop their own concepts of educational supervision. The two primary goals of our work were to understand a) how aspiring administrators identify when to apply directive versus nondirective supervisory behaviors (Glickman, Gordon, & Ross-Gordon, 2014), and b) analyze …

Presentations and other scholarship
Everyone in an academic leadership position has felt the impact of employee morale and workplace culture, positive or negative, on their ability to get things done. How do you begin improving a dysfunctional culture? How do you maintain faculty and staff morale during difficult times? This discussion will focus on the intricate and delicate ecosystem of relationships, norms, and behaviors that constitute a college’s workplace culture. In particular, we will discuss tools and best practices for fostering a collegial climate of optimism, transparency, and mutual respect within the tangled structures of academia.

Education Faculty Articles and Research
This article raises questions about the role of NCTE in an era of widespread education reform that often runs counter to a wide body of scholarship and members’ understandings of ways to build strong, equitable educational systems. The authors call on NCTE to reinvent itself primarily as a space from which to take action toward equity and justice. This provocateur piece offers a loving critique of NCTE’s notion of advocacy at a time when neoliberal education reforms limit educators’ capacity to carry out our collective responsibilities to marginalized and vulnerable youth.

Nontraditional Students Success In Compressed Courses Within A Community College Cohort, Elizabeth Kinter Tanner
Nontraditional Students Success In Compressed Courses Within A Community College Cohort, Elizabeth Kinter Tanner
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Nontraditional students are an untapped population for American higher education institutions. Private baccalaureate-granting universities have taken the lead on creating programs for this population’s needs. These programs typically include combinations of online instruction, cohorts, compressed or accelerated courses, and prior learning assessment. Similarly constructed programs for nontraditional students at public community colleges are less common. A review of the Council for Accelerated Programs’ website reveals only twelve of the 98-member institutions are community or technical colleges, and only one is in California (Council for Accelerated Programs, n.d.). In 2016, Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Joint Community College District in California created the Accelerated College …

The Role Of Leadership In School Innovation: A Case Study, Savannah Adkins Denning
The Role Of Leadership In School Innovation: A Case Study, Savannah Adkins Denning
Dissertations
Expansive research on leadership, particularly school leadership, has suggested leaders have an indirect impact on student outcomes, as leaders build a school’s academic capacity, which elevates teaching and learning (Hallinger, 2010). Though there is significant empirical research regarding school leadership, there is a lack of research investigating the intersection of leadership and innovation. In terms of innovation, “personalized learning,” has become an emerging topic among education researchers, as scholars seek to understand the potential impact personalized learning strategies have on student outcomes.
The purpose of this study was to explore how leadership interacts with innovation. This study specifically explored the …

Gifted Education To Honors Education: A Curious History, A Vibrant Future, Nicholas Colangelo
Gifted Education To Honors Education: A Curious History, A Vibrant Future, Nicholas Colangelo
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
Gifted programs and honors education have evolved along parallel tracks in the past decades with little interconnection or cross-communication. Exploring what these two fields can teach each other should allow us to collaborate in addressing their overlapping goals and potential conflicts in order to better educate bright young students. At both the high school and college levels, teachers often assume that gifted students need no special attention, that we can simply get out of their way and focus our attention on students who struggle academically. Those of us in both gifted and honors education know better. At the University of …

Social Media For Honors Colleges: Swipe Right Or Left?, Corinne R. Green
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
In the face of new technologies, honors faculty and staff should begin understanding the way their students interact with these technologies to apply them appropriately within the honors experience. Social media is a prominent and controversial technology that requires more research on how honors students and students with gifts and talents embrace or reject the trending innovations. Honors pedagogues express some controversy over whether the presence of online technology enhances or decreases the sense of community within their college (Alger; English; Johnson, “Meeting”; Salas), but this issue is moot if honors professionals do not seek understanding about how honors students …

Ways We Can Do Better: Bridging The Gap Between Gifted Education And Honors Colleges, Angie L. Miller
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
Over the past decade of my academic career, I have increasingly noticed the gap between K–12 gifted education and honors college education as my research has forced me to straddle the two areas. My doctoral education at Ball State University included a specialization in gifted studies, which was a natural fit with my own interests in creative cognitive processes. During this time, I worked with a team that amassed a large data set from the honors college students, with twelve different measures ranging from topics of temperament to perfectionism to social dominance orientation. These measures addressed mostly psychosocial and emotional …

Last year’s surprise hit of the television season was The Good Doctor, in which Freddie Highmore plays a gifted surgical resident who is also a high-functioning autistic. Critics speculate that it succeeded because audiences are hungry for good-outcome fantasy, or “warm bath” television. Fantasy is right. As much as we love watching Shaun Murphy show up not only all the other residents but all the attending physicians, we wouldn’t want to work with him in real life. Gifted students who can move through the K–12 curriculum so quickly that they can earn college-ready SAT scores at 11 or 12 are …
