Secondary Principal Leadership And The Impact On Engaging Hands-On Learning Strategies, Sarah Morrison, Ray Thompson Oct 2022

Secondary Principal Leadership And The Impact On Engaging Hands-On Learning Strategies, Sarah Morrison, Ray Thompson

School Leadership Review

The purpose of this narrative inquiry study was to understand how secondary campus principals build capacity in teachers to actively engage students in the processes of meaningful learning. Secondary campus principals should continuously work with teachers in a team setting in order to implement best practices. In recent years, “researchers in educational leadership have called for a new sustainable model for the future” and one must rethink how engagement aligns for student success. Hands-on learning can be instrumental in increasing student engagement, which, in turn, builds student capacity, students who do not feel challenged often become bored in the educational …

Whose Poverty Is It? An Autoethnography, Corinne Brion

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

When I first met my husband, he told me, “I have nothing material, I do not have money or many possessions.” When he meant he had nothing, he literally meant it, no savings, no house, no bank account, no retirement plans, and a job that hardly paid for one meal a day. His most precious possessions were a bicycle and the toolbox he used as a mechanic. He lived with his mom, sister and two nieces in a one-bedroom self-contained unit they rented. There was no bathroom, no toilet, no kitchen, no personal space, no decoration, and no furniture. It …

Need-Based Aid, Participation In Education Abroad, And Program Type Choice, Angela D. Bell, Leslie E. Hodges, Donald L. Rubin, Coryn Shiflet Sep 2022

Need-Based Aid, Participation In Education Abroad, And Program Type Choice, Angela D. Bell, Leslie E. Hodges, Donald L. Rubin, Coryn Shiflet

Journal of Student Financial Aid

Although education abroad in the US offers participants demonstrable benefits, direct and opportunity costs are cited as primary barriers to broader participation. Yet the degree to which low-income status deters studying abroad and whether additional need-based aid beyond Pell Grants encourages participation remain uncertain. Moreover, not all education abroad programs are equivalent in terms of costs. This study is the first to examine whether need-based aid recipients differentially choose programs of varying duration or programs offered by various provider types. The sample consisted of 221,981 students from 36 institutions of the Consortium for Analysis of Student Success through International Education …

Conceptualizing The Campus Culture: The Significance Of Cultural Artifacts, Ryan Theroux, Derek Furukawa Sep 2022

Conceptualizing The Campus Culture: The Significance Of Cultural Artifacts, Ryan Theroux, Derek Furukawa

New York Journal of Student Affairs

Cultural artifacts convey meanings and messages to members of a campus community that provide insights into the culture of a college. Artifacts may include physical, behavioral, or verbal phenomena that one identifies in the culture of an institution. While studies of culture on college campuses have been conducted through anthropological, organizational, and academic lenses, it is still unclear how cultural artifacts are categorized within higher education literature and why this may be important. Based on a review of literature from multiple disciplines and institutional examples, the authors present a categorization and conceptual framework of cultural artifacts found on college campuses. …

Uem Guiding Principle 8 (Continuously Developing, Committed & Caring Staff), Eileen Quinn, Fionnuala Darby, Shaun Ferns, Barry J. Ryan

Group Reports

This UEM Essential introduces Guiding Principle 8: "Continuously Developing Committed and Caring Staff." High-quality staff development is essential to TU Dublin’s success and the success of its learners. Creating a culture of teaching and learning excellence requires staff who are open to growth and development. The UEM emphasises nurturing and supporting staff while adopting people practices that convey care, particularly from leadership. This culture of care has a ripple effect, fostering stronger connections between colleagues and enhancing the learner experience. This principle operates on three interdependent layers of commitment: (i) individual staff development, (ii) staff commitment to TU Dublin’s mission, …

Synthesis Of Literature On Effective Educator Practices In The Online Setting: Perspectives From A Caribbean Higher Education Context Through University Pedagogy, Donna Walker, Breneil Malcolm

Journal of Research Initiatives

Adult learners increasingly pursue higher education opportunities. As such, it is crucial for educators to ensure that they are competently equipped and are using the most effective strategies to facilitate the learning process. Through a review of extant literature, we develop a conceptual framework that is grounded in university pedagogy theory to emphasize a shared approach to the learning process. We conclude with implications for practice specific to international and nontraditional contexts.

Leadership Competencies For Christian Directors At International Schools In Saudi Arabia, Ayanna Saran Jones Aug 2022

Leadership Competencies For Christian Directors At International Schools In Saudi Arabia, Ayanna Saran Jones

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

As Christian leaders expand their influence into the Middle East, it is important for both leaders and institutions to know what competencies are essential for these leaders. Educational leadership in Saudi Arabia is under reformation as expats and nationals work in collaboration to lead international schools towards Vision 2030. To compile a list of essential competencies, this exploratory qualitative research explored which skills, behaviors, and knowledge were recommended by recruiters and Saudi principals for international directors. The exploratory research included interviews with three Saudi principals and three recruiters who shed light on the essential competencies for expatriate directors. Based on …

This article examines the political dimensions of the art, literature, “zines,” music, and activism of the American punk movement in the 1980s. The scene was dominated by far-Left views, which were both taught and learned and, thus, served as an informal civic education for many young people in the subculture.

Teacher Versus Parent Perceptions Of Children's Imaginative (Pretend) Play As An Avenue For Learning And The Implication Of Digital Media Use, Christine Snyder Aug 2022

Teacher Versus Parent Perceptions Of Children's Imaginative (Pretend) Play As An Avenue For Learning And The Implication Of Digital Media Use, Christine Snyder

Impact: A Journal of Community and Cultural Inquiry in Education

This study explores teacher and parent perceptions of children’s imaginative (pretend) play as an avenue for learning and the implication of digital media use. In this study, 100 teachers and 130 parents (n = 230) of one- to five-year-olds completed a survey expressing their views on play, children’s exposure to digital media, and observations of children’s learning and development. Observations of children’s learning and development focused specifically on creativity, executive function skills, problem solving, and social interactions. Findings indicate that generally parents and teachers value play, children have greater exposure to digital media at home (versus school), and observations of …

Passing The Mic: Teachers' Conceptions Of Student Voice In Urban Classrooms, Sharon E. Hopkins Aug 2022

Passing The Mic: Teachers' Conceptions Of Student Voice In Urban Classrooms, Sharon E. Hopkins

Impact: A Journal of Community and Cultural Inquiry in Education

In education there have been many reforms over the years that have asked teachers to be self-reflexive about their pedagogical practices as well as to develop their own articulation of the true purpose of education. One such reform has been centered around the term “student voice.” While there are many different theoretical interpretations and practical implementations of the term, this study sought to identify how teachers in an urban setting conceive of the term, as well as how they described their own facilitation in practice. This is particularly important for traditionally marginalized students who often feel disempowered in school. Using …

A Predictive Model Of Completion At Mississippi’S Community Colleges, Richard Baker Aug 2022

A Predictive Model Of Completion At Mississippi’S Community Colleges, Richard Baker

Dissertations

In the 2020 American presidential election and throughout the time since, the discussion of free community college continues to raise its head in the present political landscape in the United States. As the recognition of the contribution of community colleges to the overall educational level of the country grows, increased focus is going to be placed on how efficient and effective these two-year institutions are.

This research expands the body of knowledge by combining Resource Dependency Theory (RDT) and Astin’s Input-Environment-Output (IEO) model into an educational production function as defined by Bowles (1970). Neither RDT nor IEO is complete on …

Generation Z : Who Are They And What Do They Expect From Student Affairs On Campus?, Mary Elizabeth Wake Aug 2022

Generation Z : Who Are They And What Do They Expect From Student Affairs On Campus?, Mary Elizabeth Wake

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This quantitative study aimed to expand upon existing research, which discussed student expectations, the relationship between expectations and retention, persistence, and student success, as well as why understanding student expectations is important to supporting student success. This research study explored these concepts from a lens of Generational Theory, which includes the notion that each generation has differing values, experiences of life events and motivational factors. Effective delivery of services, which can aid student success and retention, is enhanced when professionals within student affairs are able to appreciate students as individuals, as well as who they are as a generational cohort. …

The Front Lines Of Student Success: A Phenomenography Exploring The Background And Knowledge Of Primary Role Academic Advisors In Higher Education, Alicia N. Abney Aug 2022

The Front Lines Of Student Success: A Phenomenography Exploring The Background And Knowledge Of Primary Role Academic Advisors In Higher Education, Alicia N. Abney

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenographic study was to understand the experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives of new, primary role academic advisors at four-year public institutions in the United States. Research on advising has provided insight into advising best practices and the student perceptions of academic advising; however, there is little research illustrating current primary role academic advisors and their experience, or perhaps lack thereof.

To receive highly coveted federal and state funding, higher education institutions must show growth in student success. Academic advisors are on the front lines of student success because they are tasked with the responsibility of retaining …

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)

School administrators’ technological competencies serve as an essential element in school excellence. As a lead for curriculum implementation, school administrators anchor technological integration in the school settings and operations, curriculum and pedagogy and create an enabling environment for ICT development competencies between and among teachers and students. As a result, this study aimed to investigate the ICT resource accessibility and pre-tertiary administrators’ competencies in usage after the covid-19 partial closure of schools in Ghana. The study used a sequential explanatory mixed-method approach and a descriptive survey design. The target population was 70 Public Senior High School (PSHS) administrators in the …

Why Do Effective Science Teachers Persist?: A Mixed Methods Approach Exploring Post-Induction Effective Science Teachers' Experiences, Molly Ella Ramker, William Raymond Lange, Jesse Wilcox Ph.D., Dori Clausen

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium

Secondary science teachers have been leaving the field at an increasing rate in recent years. While much is known about science teacher attrition, less is known about science teacher persistence. The purpose of this study was to identify effective post-induction science teachers and analyze why they persist. This study was conducted using a mixed-methods approach including the Local Systemic Change Classroom Observation Protocol (LSC-COP) to generate a quantitative measure of science teaching effectiveness, along with using a phenomenological approach to investigate the experiences of effective science teachers who have stayed in the field. The median and mode of the LSC-COP capsule …

Leaving College Without A Degree: The Student Experience At An Urban Broad Access Institution, Andrea Marie Garrity Jul 2022

Leaving College Without A Degree: The Student Experience At An Urban Broad Access Institution, Andrea Marie Garrity

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis seeks to understand how students who leave college without a degree, or non-completers, experience broad access institutions in an effort to shift our thinking from the student characteristics that predict college dropout to how broad access institutions can better serve students and improve graduation rates. To answer this question, I conducted interviews with former students who had recently attended a broad access institution and left without a degree. Results show that participants expressed internalized views of the traditional college student archetype, which was reinforced through their college experience. Further, participants encountered significant bureaucratic challenges and barriers, and expressed …
