Reimagining Civic Education In The United States: Integrating Research, Policy, And Practice For Democratic Renewal, Delante Clark

Graduate Scholarship and Creative Works

Civic education in the United States faces persistent challenges, including inequitable access, curricular fragmentation, and reluctance to address controversial social and political issues. This paper presents a comprehensive synthesis of research, policy analysis, and practice-based case studies to reimagine civic education for the 21st century. Drawing on core scholarship supplemented with additional peer-reviewed studies on school segregation, charter school demographics, and race-conscious student assignment policies, the study examines the historical evolution of civic education, structural inequities, political avoidance, and promising innovations. Using a qualitative synthesis approach, the findings highlight five thematic areas: structural inequities, curricular misalignment, sanitized narratives, limits of …

Professor Perspectives: Inclusion Of Students With An Intellectual Disability In Transition Programming On A College Campus, Melissa Jane Massey Oct 2025

Professor Perspectives: Inclusion Of Students With An Intellectual Disability In Transition Programming On A College Campus, Melissa Jane Massey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Students with intellectual disabilities (ID) are often unemployed or underemployed compared to students who do not have ID. Transition or postsecondary programming for students with ID has increased in recent years in response to the U.S. federal requirement for special education professionals to complete transition plans before students turn 16. The requirement for transition planning in Texas is age 14, and the ARD committee including the student and parent come together to develop goals for future planning. Transition plans include information on future employment, future independent living skills, and agency connections that students with ID may need to access to …

Collaborative Reflections On A Practical Journey Through Transcendental Phenomenology Data Analysis, Tyler Kulp, Hissah Alzahrani, Michele Parker Sep 2025

Collaborative Reflections On A Practical Journey Through Transcendental Phenomenology Data Analysis, Tyler Kulp, Hissah Alzahrani, Michele Parker

The Qualitative Report

Although transcendental phenomenology is widely recognized in qualitative research, there is limited discussion of how researchers come to understand and apply its methods in practice. This paper examines how reflective collaboration enhances the understanding and use of transcendental phenomenological analysis. It involves the first author, a recent doctoral graduate, the second author, a current doctoral student, and the third author, the doctoral advisor, using a collaborative approach. We draw upon the first author’s dissertation, providing clear, actionable guidance for simplifying the analysis process. The discussion highlights the value of collaborative reflection in making the methodology more accessible and enriching understanding …

Effective Engagement In Online Asynchronous Graduate Courses: How Students Perceive Engagement In Their Graduate Programs, Matthew A. Galeota, Robert M. Mangione, Stephanie M. Foote Sep 2025

Effective Engagement In Online Asynchronous Graduate Courses: How Students Perceive Engagement In Their Graduate Programs, Matthew A. Galeota, Robert M. Mangione, Stephanie M. Foote

New York Journal of Student Affairs

An increase in online learning has created a set of new challenges for higher education institutions. Institutions seek to retain students and ensure they are engaged in their courses. This paper examines forms of engagement that traditional and nontraditional students perceive in their online asynchronous graduate courses at a public flagship university. The authors examined relevant literature and surveyed students across several online graduate education programs. The survey shows that collaborative engagement, specifically the indicator of connecting to institutional opportunities, is the lowest tallied. This suggests that online graduate programs should seek to implement more collaborative engagement indicators. The survey …

The Sacrifice Gap: Examining The Influence Of Family Expectations And Institutional Barriers Impacting Women's Leadership In Higher Education, Tara K. Shollenberger Sep 2025

The Sacrifice Gap: Examining The Influence Of Family Expectations And Institutional Barriers Impacting Women's Leadership In Higher Education, Tara K. Shollenberger

Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership

Despite constituting the majority of mid-level academic professionals and outpacing men in educational attainment, women remain significantly underrepresented in senior leadership roles across higher education. This mixed-methods (n=20) study explores the “sacrifice gap”-the disproportionate personal, professional, and economic costs women bear to reach leadership positions-by centering the lived experiences of women leaders navigating the intersection of family expectations, institutional barriers, and identity-based discrimination. Quantitative survey data from women in higher education leadership reveal that caregiving roles such as motherhood, partnership, and household management are perceived as moderate but persistent hindrances to career advancement, with these roles functioning as interconnected, systemic …

A Tale Of Two Schools: A Comparative Case Study Demonstrating Organizational Pathways To Educator Collaborations, Michael W. Valenti Ph.D., Duhita Mahatmya, Elizabeth Levine-Brown, Karen Celedonia, Tracy Sweet Sep 2025

A Tale Of Two Schools: A Comparative Case Study Demonstrating Organizational Pathways To Educator Collaborations, Michael W. Valenti Ph.D., Duhita Mahatmya, Elizabeth Levine-Brown, Karen Celedonia, Tracy Sweet

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Effective staff collaboration in schools maximizes educators’ collective capacity, improves educator and student outcomes, and facilitates school-wide improvement efforts. Yet, many school team members struggle to collaborate effectively. Previous studies have demonstrated individual and school-level factors that influence school-based collaborations. This study expands former research by comparing the varying administrative and environmental tools employed by two schools to shape relational networks and foster interpersonal capital. Specifically, this case study explores how school-level factors shape the development of school social networks and staff collaborative behavior. We use comparative case study analysis to explore how differences in individual-level and system-level factors influence …

Multi-Generational Biases Perceived By Women To Senior Leadership Positions In Non-Profit Higher Education, Regina Watkins, Deanna R. Davis Sep 2025

Multi-Generational Biases Perceived By Women To Senior Leadership Positions In Non-Profit Higher Education, Regina Watkins, Deanna R. Davis

Journal of Research Initiatives

Women remain underrepresented in senior leadership in both public and private industry and in non-profit postsecondary education. One reason that has been identified for the gender disparity in senior leadership positions is second-generation or implicit biases. The problem addressed in this study was the existence and persistence of second-generation biases that contribute to the lack of active senior women mentors, potentially inhibiting junior women from Generation X and millennials from achieving senior leadership status in non-profit higher education. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive case study was to gain a deeper understanding of the significance of perceptions of second-generation biases, …

Bridging The Gap: Harnessing Emerging Technology To Narrow The Academic Achievement Gaps Of Minority Students, Dionne Williams, Terence Vinson, Kristi Young, Danielle Williams, James R. Mixon

The Journal of the Research Association of Minority Professors

The academic achievement gap of Black, Hispanic, and Native American students has historically lagged as it relates to Caucasian students. This work defines academic achievement as standardized test scores, graduation rates, and college completion rates. The persistent educational disparities faced by minority students remain a significant challenge for school systems. The integration of technology offers a promising solution to help narrow these academic achievement gaps and provide equitable learning opportunities. Technology offers educators the ability to utilize self-paced instructional programming, ensuring that the educational needs and deficiencies of minority students are addressed. This work explores how innovative technological tools, ranging …

Blackloving: The Culturally Responsive Engagement Practices Of Black Middle School Principals, Deandra L. Williams Aug 2025

Blackloving: The Culturally Responsive Engagement Practices Of Black Middle School Principals, Deandra L. Williams

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Black students are highly capable of learning and contributing to society when school communities are built on a foundation of love and there is meaningful school–family engagement. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine how Black middle school principals engaged with Black families using BlackLoving culturally responsive family engagement practices as Black students transitioned from elementary to middle school in Boston Public Schools (BPS). The researcher employed Black Indigenous methodology, in the form of talking circles and memoing, to gather the stories of four former Black Boston public school principals (who were all men) and to explore their …

Preparation, Development, And Refinement Of The Interview Protocol In Qualitative Research, David C. Coker, Adebowale Akande Aug 2025

Preparation, Development, And Refinement Of The Interview Protocol In Qualitative Research, David C. Coker, Adebowale Akande

The Qualitative Report

Interview protocols are by far the most common method utilized in qualitative research data collection. Novice and experienced researchers, from working on dissertations to grant proposals or other publications, often lack detailed interview design methods, as many educational programs do not require specific coursework on interview protocols and question development. To improve qualitative research, we make a proposal to incorporate an interdisciplinary approach that operationalizes three stages: preparation, development, and refinement. Preparation involves mapping the extant literature to define broad, narrow, and focused topics to write actionable standards, goals, and objectives. Development uses instructional design and educational psychology to construct …

Transpositions: Reflections On Friendship And Nine Days In October With Peter Beilharz And Sian Supski, Christopher G. Robbins Aug 2025

Transpositions: Reflections On Friendship And Nine Days In October With Peter Beilharz And Sian Supski, Christopher G. Robbins

Impact: A Journal of Community and Cultural Inquiry in Education

In this essay, the author uses the idea of transposition to reflect on Peter Beilharz and Sian Supski's historic visit to Eastern Michigan University and southeast Michigan in October 2024. Transposition is used to deprivatize Robbins's reflections to consider broader and more generalizable concerns relative to pedagogy and educational philosophy. Further, transposition, in this regard, provided a way to reflect on the (increased) importance of friendship in academia.

Keywords: transposition, translation, friendship

"Through A Medium Of Fordism": Images And Ideas On Utopia, Lisa Voelker Aug 2025

"Through A Medium Of Fordism": Images And Ideas On Utopia, Lisa Voelker

Impact: A Journal of Community and Cultural Inquiry in Education

The concept of utopia, which has long captivated human imagination, offering a vision of an ideal society that can be inspiring, is elusive at best and harmful in many of the actual attempts we’ve seen throughout history. This photo essay takes me through the philosophical underpinnings of Fordism’s Utopian ideas, the cultural intersections between the United States and Australia, and the enduring fascination with antiquity that shapes our modern identities (Gray, 2018). I aim to learn more about the contradictions and patterns that define our collective and individual pursuits of an ideal world.

Keywords: utopia, contradictions, liberation, photography

The Flaying Of America's Utopia: What New Dreams Can Be Imagined?, Rachel Robbins-Whited Aug 2025

The Flaying Of America's Utopia: What New Dreams Can Be Imagined?, Rachel Robbins-Whited

Impact: A Journal of Community and Cultural Inquiry in Education

Amid the collapse of American constitutionalism and the crisis of late capitalism, this paper argues for the urgent reimagining of global education through Critical Globalization Studies (CGS). Drawing from world-systems analysis, Fordism, and utopian theory, it traces how the United States exported capitalist hegemony globally, contributing to our current interregnum. The paper proposes CGS and Critical Global Citizenship Education (CGCE) as pedagogical tools for cultivating ethical, justice-oriented youth capable of imagining post-capitalist futures. Emphasizing glocalization and the legitimacy of non-Western epistemologies, the work calls for a reversal of hegemonic flows, where peripheral cultures help to reshape global education. It addresses …

Road Trip!: U-Turns, Detours, And Construction Aplenty In Fordist Modernity, Eric Ferris Aug 2025

Road Trip!: U-Turns, Detours, And Construction Aplenty In Fordist Modernity, Eric Ferris

Impact: A Journal of Community and Cultural Inquiry in Education

Beginning with Peter Beilharz’s (2015) assertion that the modern and its active form, modernization, are often reductively conflated with both Fordism and Americanism, this essay teases out the idea that modernization is multifaceted, contested, and global in scope, despite the pains that both Fordism and Americanism have taken to obscure this unevenness in an attempt to monopolize the narrative of modernization. From there, it takes seriously Beilharz’s (2015) assertion that modernization imprints itself onto both production and consumption, and that among its paramount innovations is its impact on culture. The essay asserts that in addition to the automobile, Fordism has …

Forging Desire Paths In Undesirable Times, Rachel Dick Aug 2025

Forging Desire Paths In Undesirable Times, Rachel Dick

Impact: A Journal of Community and Cultural Inquiry in Education

Drawing on the visit of Dr. Peter Beilharz and Dr. Sian Supski to Eastern Michigan University in October 2024, this essay explores the relationship between desire paths and our intersectional identities. Examining the impact of modernity on our lived experiences and conceptions of utopia, the essay explores the reality of the paths we must navigate daily to function in a society built on systems of power and oppression. Ultimately, the essay argues that marginalized individuals must draw survivance and insurgent lines, rather than truly desirable lines, in order to strive towards utopia.

Keywords: desire paths, utopia, identity, survivance, insurgent

Desire Paths: The Visible And Invisible, Audrey Farrugia Aug 2025

Desire Paths: The Visible And Invisible, Audrey Farrugia

Impact: A Journal of Community and Cultural Inquiry in Education

This paper explores the concept of desire paths, unplanned routes created by people to move quickly through an environment, and their relationship to inclusivity and social justice. Building on Sian Supski’s public talk at Eastern Michigan University’s College of Education, sponsored by The Workshop for Community+Collaboration and the Morris Chair for Educational Transformation, which highlighted the use of desire paths in everyday life, this paper promotes the exploration of the unconventional and often invisible desire paths created and traveled by marginalized people.

Keywords: desire path, inclusivity, disorientation guide

Sowing The Seeds Of Utopia Collectively, From Australia To America And Everywhere In Between: A Methodology And Practice For Resistance And Emancipation, Rachelle F. Marshall

Impact: A Journal of Community and Cultural Inquiry in Education

This reflection on internationally renowned scholars Peter Beilharz and Sian Supski’s visit to Eastern Michigan University (EMU) in October 2024 presents utopia as a sociological methodology useful for research in educational studies. Presenting a brief introduction and exploration of the methodology, this article considers the cultural changes that are necessary to teach toward democratic, ecologically sustainable utopias compared to capitalist visions of utopia. As a starting point for further discussion, this personal reflection merely scratches the surface to provide a glimpse into the conditions that would underlie a democratic, ecologically sustainable utopia and serves to document a few of the …

Trans* Student Experiences In Higher Education, Megan Chaffee, Deborah King Aug 2025

Trans* Student Experiences In Higher Education, Megan Chaffee, Deborah King

New York Journal of Student Affairs

This paper reviews literature on trans* students' experiences in higher education, examining their obstacles and institutional approaches to inclusion. The study investigates challenges regarding chosen names and pronouns, access to facilities, extracurricular involvement, and the impact of increasing anti-trans* legislation. Despite growing visibility, trans* students continue to report harassment, discrimination, and a decreased sense of belonging. The paper explores current Title IX interpretations and recommends that higher education administrators develop inclusive policies, enhance professional development, and create supportive campus environments that foster trans* students' academic success and overall well-being.

Addressing Psychosocial Barriers To Participation In People Experiencing Homelessness: An Occupational Therapy Workshop, Preston Bender, Steven M. Gerardi, Lacey Spark

Summer 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium

Despite the occupational therapy (OT) profession's emphasis on holistic, person-centered care, many OT practitioners and students report feeling a lack of self-efficacy and preparedness to navigate the complex psychological, social, and systemic barriers that hinder occupational participation in people experiencing homelessness (PEH). This capstone project aimed to address the perceived unpreparedness among clinicians through the creation of an 8-hour interactive educational workshop aligned with Experiential Learning Theory. The content is grounded in the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) and informed by the Bridging the Transition from Homelessness: A Social Justice Framework (BTTF), trauma-informed care (TIC), harm reduction, and diversity, equity, …
