Curriculum Development In The Small College, C. Rex Mix
Curriculum Development In The Small College, C. Rex Mix
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Focused on speech communication program building in small colleges, this article compares curriculum development across two institutional settings and identifies conditions that shape success. It emphasizes the importance of flexible generalist instructors, supportive administrators, a strong basic course, careful cycling of advanced courses, and personalized advising that connects educational goals with career possibilities. The article also discusses the need to explain communication study to colleagues in related disciplines, build reciprocal relationships across campus, and use professional meetings to reduce isolation. Challenges include limited faculty, constrained budgets, inadequate library resources, reduced student exposure to multiple perspectives, and difficulty sustaining visibility in …
The Politics Of Survival At Home: Bargaining Power On Campus, Don B. Morlan
The Politics Of Survival At Home: Bargaining Power On Campus, Don B. Morlan
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Drawing on department chair experience, this article argues that communication departments must recognize and improve their political standing within colleges and universities. It contends that departments often generate substantial enrollment and tuition revenue while still lacking disciplinary credibility and bargaining power. The article proposes a curricular model that requires communication majors to complete structured course blocs in other departments rather than relying on loosely distributed electives. Priorities For Program Survival, Stanley F. Paulson
Priorities For Program Survival, Stanley F. Paulson
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Written from a dean’s perspective, this article identifies factors that can strengthen speech communication programs during periods of budget pressure and program review. It argues that communication benefits from broad societal growth, employer demand for speaking, listening, interpersonal, and writing abilities, and strong student interest, but also faces economic retrenchment and possible overproduction of academic doctorates. The article recommends four priorities for program survival: high quality research, stronger relationships with other disciplines, balance between theoretical study and competence based instruction, and development of public constituencies including alumni and campus partners. It frames these priorities not only as defensive strategies but …
