In the year 1950, public laws 815 and 874 were formally added to the federal statutes through action by the Congress of the United States. This legislation provided federal funds to public schools under conditions which enabled and encouraged their integration of Indian students. Overall, such integration was advantageous to Indian groups. Since the 1920's the conviction that Indians learned better in the public schools, where there was increased contact with the majority culture, had been growing. Recent research, involving Indian students from mission schools, federal schools, and public schools, supported this conviction. The transfer of students from Bureau of …

An Investigation Into The Bilingual Child's Comprehension Of Antonyms, Christine Glass Dudding

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The purpose of this study was to determine the Indian or Spanish-American bilingual child's proficiency in the comprehension of antonyms of the English language. The method employed was (1) to devise a test which will give the child an opportunity to indicate his use of antonyms and his ability to recognize common pairs of opposites. These test items are arranged in an order of increasing difficultly, but are kept well within the range of fourth grade reading ability; (2) to direct the administration of this antonym test to a selected sample of fourth grade Anglo children in the Albuquerque Public …

History Of The Church College Of Hawaii 1955-1960, Ralph Dallas Olson May 1961

History Of The Church College Of Hawaii 1955-1960, Ralph Dallas Olson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

From the Mormon point of view, ignorance is a sin. Mormons believe that their very salvation is dependent upon the development of their mental and spiritual powers, as evidenced from the two following, typical statements from Mormon sacred literature: "The glory of God is intelligence;" "It is impossible for man to be saved in ignorance."

An Analysis Of The Educational Program At The West Virginia Forestry Camp For Youthful Male Offenders, Joseph Martin Hickman Jan 1961

An Analysis Of The Educational Program At The West Virginia Forestry Camp For Youthful Male Offenders, Joseph Martin Hickman

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study revealed that the West Virginia Forestry Camp has in its legal machinery the purpose of rehabilitating male juvenile offenders between the ages of 16 and 21. However, no overt statements of educational objectives were found in the rehabilitative program.

Tests revealed both a low intelligence level and a low grade achievement level among the cases examined.

Questionnaires made known the desire of many of the commitals to take part in vocational training at camp. This means of inquiry also made known the reluctancy of several boys to participate in any portion of the camp program except the work …
