Linking Academic Excellence And Social Justice Through Community-Based Participatory Research, Lydia Voigt

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

Naomi Yavneh Klos poses two questions for the NCHC community in her essay, “Thinking Critically, Acting Justly,” which appears in this issue of JNCHC: (1) how honors pedagogy/curriculum can engage the highestability and most motivated students in questions of social justice; and (2) how the honors curriculum can serve as a place of access, equity, and excellence in higher education. The University Honors Program (UHP) at Loyola University New Orleans has recently implemented several honors social justice seminars that have been experimenting with various approaches to these pedagogical, curricular, and programmatic questions. Violence and Democracy, an honors sociology/criminology seminar, not …

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

introduction

For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them. —Aristotle, The Nicomachean Ethics

Honors graduates have much to learn when transitioning into their first position after college. For instance, workplaces have an entirely different culture and set of expectations from undergraduate honors classrooms (Wendlandt & Rochlen). Furthermore, the skills they need to become successful employees or graduate students are different from those required of successful honors college students, with a greater emphasis on communication skills (Stevens) as one example.

Honors students are bright, curious, and hard-working (Achterberg), and honors programs give …

The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to examine how the interorganizational relationship between school administrators and law enforcement personnel in the Midwest, South, and Southwest regions of the United States with diverse cultures, missions, and objectives to collaborate to create, implement, and sustain emergency management readiness. The theoretical concept that guided this study involved interorganizational theories as they relate to two or more organizations working together toward a common goal. Building Bridges On Local Soil: Locality And Community-Engaged Research And Pedagogy, Craig T. Maier Jan 2018

Building Bridges On Local Soil: Locality And Community-Engaged Research And Pedagogy, Craig T. Maier

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

Over a decade ago, Oster-Aaland, Sellnow, Nelson, and Pearson (2004), following up an earlier survey published in JACA (Sellnow and Oster, 1999), found that communityengaged research and pedagogy had become an established part of the communication curriculum. As a special issue of Peer Review has suggested (Carey, 2017), interest in service learning has only grown, and the increasing emphasis on civic engagement and community development has clear implications for the communication discipline. Courses and projects that address pressing or emerging social problems not only raise students’ ethical awareness but also allow students to build research and professional skills that build …

Appreciative Inquiry In An Urban Context: Service Learning Amidst The Opioid Crisis, Craig T. Maier Jan 2018

Appreciative Inquiry In An Urban Context: Service Learning Amidst The Opioid Crisis, Craig T. Maier

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

Britt’s (2012) service-learning framework situates community engaged learning activities in three broad categories: the practice of doing, which emphasizes skill building in relation to real-world problems; the practice of becoming, which sensitizes students to a broader range of social and civic responsibilities; and the practice of engaging in social change, which translates skill development and awareness into concrete action. This essay describes a successful service learning project focusing on opioid addiction in a mid-Atlantic city that combines all three. After describing the project’s background and implementation, it suggests practices and lessons that could inform similar efforts.

Emergency Management In Community Colleges: Why Colleges Need To Be Prepared, Dave Dibelka Jan 2018

Emergency Management In Community Colleges: Why Colleges Need To Be Prepared, Dave Dibelka

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This practice brief provides community college leaders with recommendations for preparing for emergencies that could occur on their campuses. When issues occur on college campuses that have an impact on day-to-day operations, administrators need to be prepared to ensure that their students, faculty, and staff have the knowledge of what to do before and after these situations occur. Also, these issues can bring increased media attention and, if the incident is not handled properly, it can cause serious harm to the institution's reputation. Having plans and teams in place prior to an incident will benefit not only the institution but …
