Communication And The College-Wide Administrator: A View From Up And Out, John E. Hopkins
Communication And The College-Wide Administrator: A View From Up And Out, John E. Hopkins
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This essay presents a reflective analysis of how communication skills inform effective leadership in higher education and philanthropy. Drawing on personal experience as a department chair, college president, and foundation executive, the author argues that communication training equips administrators with critical competencies for addressing diverse constituencies and complex institutional demands. The discussion identifies four primary areas where communication expertise proves indispensable: listening, public speaking, group decision making, and media relations. Each is explored as both a theoretical and practical foundation for leadership. The essay also emphasizes the value of financial literacy and persuasive communication in managing organizational resources and fostering …
Using Theatre Appreciation And Universal Aspects Of Drama As Recruiting Tools, Jerry L. Schwiebert
Using Theatre Appreciation And Universal Aspects Of Drama As Recruiting Tools, Jerry L. Schwiebert
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article presents a strategy for recruiting students into small or non major theatre programs through theatre appreciation courses and participatory workshops. The author identifies the main obstacles to student involvement as misconceptions about time commitment and insecurity about performance ability, arguing that directors must make programs accessible and meaningful to potential participants. The discussion describes how introductory theatre courses can serve as both audience development and recruiting platforms by incorporating play reading, performance based assignments, and playwriting exercises. These activities allow instructors to identify talented and interested students while demystifying the rehearsal process. The article also highlights the use …
The Down-Side Of Internships: A Clash Between The Academic And Professional Communities, Robert Abelman
The Down-Side Of Internships: A Clash Between The Academic And Professional Communities, Robert Abelman
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article examines structural tensions in internship programs that arise from divergent expectations held by universities and host organizations. Using four years of program administration at Cleveland State University, the analysis differentiates internship ecologies across three settings. Nonprofit agencies often treat interns as supplemental labor with limited supervision. Small profit centered firms tend to equate internships with paying dues and expand responsibility only after extra hours and routine tasks. Large corporations frequently restrict interns to observation due to policy or union constraints. The article argues that educational value depends on active oversight by faculty through a three part framework of …
And Now, Perhaps, Grade Deflation, Gordon R. Owen
And Now, Perhaps, Grade Deflation, Gordon R. Owen
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article investigates grade inflation within basic speech communication courses and reports an experiment designed to counteract it through systematic grading reform. Reviewing seven decades of literature on the problem of evaluating performance in speech instruction, the author identifies persistent subjectivity, ethical dilemmas, and pressure to reward improvement over proficiency. Drawing on national data showing widespread grade inflation across higher education, the study documents local evidence of rising grade point averages after the introduction of graduate teaching assistants in a large introductory communication course. To address the issue, the department implemented a revised grading model adapted from Robert T. Oliver’s …
Marketing’S Four P’S In Speech Communication, Isa N. Engleberg
Marketing’S Four P’S In Speech Communication, Isa N. Engleberg
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article adapts the marketing framework of product, price, place, and promotion to the design and management of speech communication programs. It begins with situational analysis, linking audience analysis and needs assessment to a systematic review of markets, student consumers, and competitors. It then proposes a research strategy to generate local evidence, a marketing mix to align offerings with student needs, a process strategy to embed marketing in departmental planning, and evaluation procedures to assess outcomes. Product receives primary emphasis, with attention to instructional quality in the basic course, cocurricular activities, services, and facilities, alongside decisions about addition, modification, and …
Equivocality: The Managerial Art Of Hedging, Michele T. Myers
Equivocality: The Managerial Art Of Hedging, Michele T. Myers
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article reflects on two questions in administrative practice. First, whether formal training in speech communication prepares individuals for administrative roles. Second, whether classroom models of communication correspond to organizational realities. Drawing on experience as an academic administrator, the analysis offers a qualified affirmation on both counts while challenging the field’s assumption that communication should always strive for common meaning and high fidelity. The argument advances equivocality as a strategic resource in settings marked by conflicting demands, uncertain audiences, and high stakes decisions. It synthesizes theoretical work on equivocal messaging and disqualification to explain why administrators sometimes benefit from ambiguity, …

The Concept Of A School Of Communication, John Lee Jellicorse
The Concept Of A School Of Communication, John Lee Jellicorse
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This essay traces the historical development of the communication disciplines and argues for the reintegration of their fragmented academic structures into unified schools of communication. Beginning with the rhetorical traditions of antiquity, it outlines the evolution of oral discourse education through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, highlighting key moments such as the elocutionary movement, the separation of speech from English departments, and the emergence of specialized areas including theatre, mass communication, communication disorders, and rhetoric. The analysis attributes administrative fragmentation to uneven disciplinary growth and institutional politics, which produced inefficiency and weakened the field’s collective influence. Drawing on examples from …
Teaparties In Wonderland, Or The Plight Of Theatre Technicians At Tenure Time, Paul A. Distler
Teaparties In Wonderland, Or The Plight Of Theatre Technicians At Tenure Time, Paul A. Distler
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This essay addresses the distinctive challenges faced by technical theatre faculty during tenure and promotion evaluations. It argues that the work of theatre technicians, though integral to production, is often misunderstood by faculty committees grounded in traditional academic disciplines. The author identifies two primary obstacles: the lack of comprehension of the technician’s specialized domain and the mismatch between evaluative emphasis on product rather than process. Unlike directors and designers, whose contributions are visible in performance, technicians demonstrate expertise through planning, construction, and problem solving—processes largely invisible to evaluators. To address this, the essay proposes a structured strategy of documentation, selection, …
Why A Department Of Communication? Hanging Together Or Hanging Separately, Robert O. Blanchard
Why A Department Of Communication? Hanging Together Or Hanging Separately, Robert O. Blanchard
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This essay argues for the unification of the fragmented academic fields that study human communication, contending that the separation among speech, journalism, mass communication, and related disciplines weakens their collective intellectual and institutional standing. The author identifies three revolutions reshaping the field: the communication revolution, driven by interactive technologies that collapse distinctions between interpersonal and mass communication; the intellectual revolution, which demands integrative theoretical frameworks; and the campus revolution, which pressures academic programs to justify their disciplinary coherence and relevance to liberal education. The discussion critiques the persistence of outdated departmental divisions and vocational curricula, emphasizing the need for convergence …
Speech And Mass Communication: Together Again, E. Culpepper Clark
Speech And Mass Communication: Together Again, E. Culpepper Clark
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This essay examines the historical development and administrative philosophy behind the integration of speech and mass communication programs at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. It situates the merger within broader debates over the relationship between professional and liberal arts education, arguing that the disciplines share enough theoretical and pedagogical ground to justify collaboration at the undergraduate level. Through a detailed account of departmental structure, curriculum, faculty composition, and tenure policy, the essay demonstrates how institutional design can balance academic and professional objectives. The author advocates for a liberal arts orientation rooted in rhetoric, hermeneutics, and language-based theory, even within career-oriented …
Change, The Only Constant In The Communication Discipline: From Administrative Structures To Curricular Requirements: A Response, Ronald L. Applbaum
Change, The Only Constant In The Communication Discipline: From Administrative Structures To Curricular Requirements: A Response, Ronald L. Applbaum
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This response essay addresses the ongoing evolution of the communication discipline, emphasizing the need for adaptive academic and administrative structures capable of responding to institutional and societal change. Using a metaphor from Mark Twain to illustrate the challenges of coexistence among diverse academic actors, the author critiques the fragmentation and duplication of programs that have emerged from disciplinary divisions since the mid-twentieth century. The argument supports efforts to integrate communication subfields under unified departmental or school structures, which can strengthen shared curricular foundations and administrative efficiency. While acknowledging the limitations of large-scale reorganizations, particularly for smaller institutions, the essay calls …
To Reclaim A Legacy: What Manner Of Anthology Is This?, Richard J. Dieker
To Reclaim A Legacy: What Manner Of Anthology Is This?, Richard J. Dieker
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This essay offers a critical analysis of William J. Bennett’s To Reclaim a Legacy, a report advocating for a core humanities curriculum in American higher education. It argues that while Bennett’s call to strengthen the humanities and emphasize cultural literacy is commendable, his approach is ideologically narrow, privileging Western thought and promoting a prescriptive, conservative model of education. The author challenges the report’s assumption of scholarly consensus, its exclusionary canon, and its disregard for intellectual diversity. Through examples drawn from communication and the humanities, the essay contends that Bennett’s framework risks transforming education into indoctrination by privileging uniformity over inquiry …

The Development Of Community Education In North Carolina As Reflected By Public Awareness And Response To The Program, Grace C. Vaught
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The problem of this study was to determine the growth and development of the community education program in North Carolina and to determine if this development was reflected by public awareness and response to the program. In reviewing the literature and searching manuals of survey instruments, a questionnaire was not found which would answer the specific questions necessary for the study. A questionnaire was designed and field tested utilizing graduate students and participants in a community education workshop sponsored by National Center for Community Education from Flint, Michigan. The validation was completed by leading authorities in the field of community …
