The Development Of A School Emergency Plan For The Blue Ridge School District #18, Farmer City, Illinois, Robert D. Hooker

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to devise an emergency preparedness plan handbook for the Blue Ridge School District #18, Farmer City, Illinois. The handbook was designed to aid the school administration and staff by defining definite administrative action in carrying out the steps necessary to protect students and staff in the event of an emergency situation. A data base was formed from several sources. Information was received through a review of the literature; a review of organizational materials; a review of information from school districts through a questionnaire; interviews with individuals from professional agencies; and a review of school …

A Model For Determining Attitudes Towards School District Reorganization, James A. Voyles Jan 1988

A Model For Determining Attitudes Towards School District Reorganization, James A. Voyles

Masters Theses

The focus of this study is to provide a model for determining current attitudes toward school district reorganization so that a school board can gain local community data. The small rural school districts of central Illinois are finding fewer and fewer options when considering maintaining or increasing the quality of education in their communities. Illinois school reform legislation of 1985 included a section on school district reorganization which was an effort to reduce the number of districts and increase the quality of education. However, the sentiment was so strong against forced reorganization that the plan for reorganization died a political …

Computers And The School Principal, Paul Henry Nelson

All Master's Theses

The presence of the microcomputer in society and education is on the increase. This study compared the expertise and use of computers by elementary principals, to the availability and attitudes of its implementation by the teaching staff. A questionnaire elicited data from principals and revealed that they indirectly influenced the increase of computer use by teachers by providing inservice opportunities, workshops, and courses, and directly influenced them by providing personal encouragement. Several recommendations were made concerning administrative use of computers.

Theatre And Television: A Call For A Merger, Sharaf N. Rehman Jan 1988

Theatre And Television: A Call For A Merger, Sharaf N. Rehman

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article advocates greater collaboration between theatre and telecommunication programs in higher education, emphasizing the benefits of merging skills in performance and media production. It critiques theatre curricula for focusing almost exclusively on stage performance while neglecting training for microphones and cameras, and notes that radio-television programs often overlook dramatic production. An experimental workshop at a midwestern university demonstrated the value of integrating students from theatre, radio-television, and English in producing plays for television, with positive feedback from both faculty and professionals. Building on this model, West Texas State University developed a sequence of courses in television and radio drama …

A Survey Of Faculty Salaries In Selected Communication Disciplines: 1986–87, Patricia D. Witherspoon, Kathleen J. Jensen

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article reports results from a 1986–87 national survey of faculty salaries in selected communication disciplines, including advertising, journalism, radio-television-film, speech communication, and communication disorders. Data were collected from thirty-five institutions, primarily public universities, with salary ranges reported by rank across departments. Results indicate that advertising faculty consistently earned the highest mean salaries, particularly at the assistant professor level, reflecting competition with business schools and private sector opportunities. Speech communication salaries ranked lowest at the assistant and associate levels but showed the greatest percentage increase at the full professor rank, surpassing other disciplines. Salary differences were attributed to factors such …

Minority Recruitment For Performance Programs, Fred Behringer Jan 1988

Minority Recruitment For Performance Programs, Fred Behringer

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines the challenges and opportunities of minority recruitment and retention in higher education, with a focus on theatre programs at predominantly white institutions. It highlights national trends of declining minority enrollment and the pressures placed on colleges to meet desegregation goals, which sometimes create tension with historically Black institutions. Traditional recruitment strategies, often shaped by white middle-class assumptions, are critiqued as ineffective in reaching new pools of talent. A pilot summer theatre workshop at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is described as a model for community-based recruitment, emphasizing partnerships with Black organizations, personal outreach, and visible institutional …

A Study Of Quantity Of Articles Produced In The Communication Discipline By Institution, 1980 Through 1985 Part 1, Kittie W. Watson, Larry L. Barker, Vernon O. Ray, Robert N. Hall

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article reports findings from a national study of publication productivity in speech communication for the years 1980–1985. Using data from ten leading journals, institutional output was measured by assigning publication points, with adjustments for multiple authorship. The results identify the top fifty universities contributing to research in the discipline, showing that large doctoral-granting institutions dominated the rankings, while smaller colleges and junior colleges did not appear. The analysis also introduced a ratio comparing the number of contributing authors to total publication points, providing insight into whether output was concentrated among a few individuals or spread across larger faculties. While …

The selected secondary schools include two different school divisions.

The study employed five approaches: (1) a descriptive analysis of the variables of parental interaction with the child as it relates to a personal, affective level; a monitoring level; and a social level; as …

The Effect Of Strikes On Superintendents, Marilyn J. Yokel

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of public school superintendents regarding teacher organizations, negotiations, personnel and influence, progression of events related to the strike, issues that contributed to the strike, and time spent working on strike-related activities during and after Illinois teacher strikes occurring during the 1986-87 school year. A review of the literature revealed much relevant advisory information, but this literature was limited to one aspect or another of a strike situation, for example negotiations or unions. The Superintendent Questionnaire was sent to school districts where teachers struck during the 1986-87 school year. Descriptive statistics, …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Local Superintendents' Expectations And Perceptions Of Actual Performance Of Michigan Intermediate School Districts, Ted J. Culver

Dissertations

The changing concepts of the role and function of education as well as the economic and social developments in our society have placed new and increased demands on our educational system. The concept of a regional education service agency as an approach to providing improved services to K-12 school districts is a method adopted in Michigan. This agency is called an intermediate school district (ISD).

The purpose of the study was to discover the difference between what K-12 superintendents expect from an ISD and their perceptions of the value of the services received. The data gathered could provide decision makers …

A School Of Communication With A Liberal Arts Tradition, Jon T. Powell

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article traces the evolution of the Department of Speech Communication at Northern Illinois University into Communication Studies and its proposed development into a School of Communication. It examines how the department maintained a liberal arts tradition while adapting to new technologies, curricular demands, and disciplinary specialization. The discussion reviews changes in degree emphases, including the expansion of radio-television-film, the addition of organizational and corporate communication, and the continued role of rhetorical studies as a curricular foundation. Faculty organization by research interest, cross-teaching assignments, and collaborative governance are highlighted as strategies for preserving breadth and balance. The proposed merger with …

A Small Rhetoric Of Retrenchment: A New Ma In Telecommunications, Frank W. Oglesbee Oct 1987

A Small Rhetoric Of Retrenchment: A New Ma In Telecommunications, Frank W. Oglesbee

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article describes the development of a Master of Arts program in Telecommunications at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, designed during a period of retrenchment and shifting institutional priorities. The program emerged from challenges including rising undergraduate enrollments, limited faculty resources, and the collapse of a previous interdisciplinary master’s degree in public visual communication. Faculty and administrators framed the proposal rhetorically to emphasize career preparation in management and policy rather than production, aligning with institutional goals of “smaller but better” programming. A distinctive summer-through-summer schedule was introduced to attract non-traditional students with professional experience seeking to complete a degree in one …
