Experiences Of African American Women Working In Higher Education Leadership Positions In Predominantly White Institutions, Angela Renee Hall Carrington
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite significant educational achievements, African American women remain underrepresented in academic leadership at predominantly White institutions. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the experiences, challenges, and barriers of African American women when navigating leadership pathways. The conceptual framework guiding this study was Crenshaw’s intersectionality theory. For this basic qualitative study, purposive and snowball sampling led to semistructured interviews with 8 African American women who had at least 2 years of experience in academic leadership roles at predominantly White institutions. Participants were African American women in leadership positions at 2 predominantly White institutions in California and 3 …
Cost-Saving For Low-Income Students? Does Dual Enrollment Increase College Students’ Scholarships And Grants?, Xiaodan Hu
Journal of Student Financial Aid
This study examines the relationship between earning dual credits and college students’ scholarships and grants packages and levels, focusing on low-income students. Using nationally representative data from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009, I used a quasi-experimental approach to reduce selection bias of DE credit-earning coupled with regression models. The findings indicate that first-year college students with earned DE credits are about 1.5 times more likely to receive scholarships and grants, especially for merit-based aid. On average for the full sample, DE students receive $1,229 more in total scholarships and grants when compared with non-DE students, with $586 more …

Investigating Racial Attitudes In Higher Education Student Affairs Professionals Using The Color-Blind Racial Attitudes Scale (Cobras), Cindy Boe
The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning
Abstract
While the literature has documented the existence of colorblind racism in college students and faculty members, data about student affairs professionals (SAPs) are not yet clear. The purpose of this quasi-experimental interventional single group research was to assess SAPs using the Color-Blind Racial Attitudes Scale (CoBRAS) to investigate whether colorblind racism is present within the culture of the student affairs profession. A pretest involved survey questions about Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) statements and actions within higher education and reactions to quotations from public figures about race and society. Following a brief self-reflection about racial identity and related access …

Emerging And Young Adult Student Loan Borrowers: Financial Behaviors And Characteristics, Gaurav R. Sinha, Sean P. Mullen, Christopher R. Larrison, Sicong Sun
Journal of Student Financial Aid
We examined patterns and sociodemographic correlates of financial characteristics and behaviors among emerging and young (18-34-year-old) student loan borrowers who were repaying their loans. Employing latent class regression modeling on a subset of the 2018 National Financial Capability Study (N =1,490), we explored heterogenous constellation of patterns in financial characteristics and behaviors of these borrowers. Results indicated four distinct classes of financial characteristics and behaviors: financially strained (20.8%), financially balanced (29.2%), financially capricious (20%), and financially vulnerable (30.1%). Gender, race, and education were found to be consistently correlated with financial characteristics and behavior patterns. Marital status, income, employment, and welfare …

Loans In The Long Game: How Student Debt Affects Financial Stress Post-Graduation, Thomas S. Zimmerman, Faye R. Jones, Avery M. D. Davis, Carley Dear
Journal of Student Financial Aid
This study employs data from the National Center for Education Statistics’ (NCES) Baccalaureate and Beyond Surveys to compare financial well-being among college graduates with varying social characteristics and levels of student debt. We use logistic regression to answer three questions: 1) To what extent does the amount of debt at graduation affect students' financial stress that they will be able to meet their fiscal obligations following graduation; 2) To what degree does this affect students from marginalized backgrounds; and 3) What are the postgraduate financial experiences of students who graduate from Hispanic Serving Institutions, Primarily Black Institutions, or Historically Black …

Guardians Or Bystanders? Examining School Shooting Responses In The Southern United States, Andre L. Tompkins Ed.D.
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
School shootings challenge educational safety, demanding effective leadership strategies. The Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas, which claimed the lives of 19 children and 2 teachers, heightened concerns about campus vulnerabilities, urging administrators to prioritize student protection. I performed a qualitative study interviewing principals, teachers, parents, and community leaders to examine their experiences addressing campus threats. The findings revealed three themes: (1) ineffective leadership affects campus safety, (2) prompt actions enhance trust in leadership, and (3) connecting with others enhances safety. In this study, I spotlight the crucial role that proactive leadership plays in building the coalitions needed to …

Creating A School Climate Of Belonging And Engagement Through Visionary Leadership And Student Art, Jeff Irvine, Kyra Kristensen-Irvine
Journal of Educational Leadership in Action
This research adopted a case study methodology to investigate how student artwork helped establish a school climate that was intentionally inviting to students and the wider school community. Through the visionary leadership of two principals, a Kindergarten to Grade 5 school and a middle school enhanced their common areas through student visual arts projects. Previous research on school physical environments focused on safety, cleanliness, and noise levels. This paper addresses a research gap, identifying the role that physical environments played in promoting a positive school climate which in turn promoted students’ sense of belonging and engagement.

Traditional Vs. Modern-Grading Practices: A Comparative Case Study, Sarah Ruth Morris, Matt Townsley
Traditional Vs. Modern-Grading Practices: A Comparative Case Study, Sarah Ruth Morris, Matt Townsley
Journal of Educational Leadership in Action
This comparative case study explores the influences of traditional and modern grading systems on ninth-grade students' academic and psychological outcomes. Employing quantitative and qualitative methods, including OLS regressions and focus group discussions, our research investigates student attitudes towards grading practices at two contrasting schools—one utilizing traditional grading methods and the other a more modern, progressive, standards-based approach. Findings suggest that while modern grading practices are favored for their fairness and focus on mastery, they do not significantly enhance academic outcomes or student well-being in the short term. The study highlights the complex implications of grading reforms and underscores the need …

Board-Head Relationships: The Role Of Relational Trust And Intentional Care In Fostering Head Of School Well-Being, Cassidy Klutts, Albert Cheng
Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications
Given the challenges of school leadership and high rates of school leader attrition, scholars have increasingly given attention to the wellbeing of heads of schools. However, that research has not considered the way governing boards potentially influence head of school wellbeing. We fill this gap by examining how relational dynamics between heads of school and governing boards are associated with head of school wellbeing. Using data from about 140 heads of schools who participated in the Society for Classical Learning’s 2023 Thriving Schools Survey, we find that (a) relational trust between heads and boards and (b) care of the head …

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications
The COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread disruptions to education, with school closures affecting over one billion children. These closures, aimed at reducing virus transmission, resulted in significant learning losses, particularly in mathematics and science. Using United States data from TIMSS, this study analyzes the impact of school closure on learning outcomes. The losses amount to 0.36 SD for mathematics and 0.16 SD for science. The declines are similar across grades. The average decline in mathematics performance among U.S. students is substantially greater than the global average. n science, the decline observed among U.S. students does not significantly differ from the global …
