A Phenomenological Study Of High School Assistant Principals Who Supervise Special Education, Erin Vacchio
A Phenomenological Study Of High School Assistant Principals Who Supervise Special Education, Erin Vacchio
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This phenomenological study examined the lived experiences of high school assistant principals who lead the Exceptional Student Education (ESE) departments at their respective schools. The role of the school leader is critical and complex. Second to only the classroom teachers, school leaders have the ability to shape the school wide attitude and vision for students with disabilities. Knowing that in the past 30 years, the number of students with disabilities has nearly doubled in size, the expertise of school leaders in special education must also increase. Research on the experiences of high school administrators who serve students with intellectual disabilities …

Internal Funding Newsletters
The University of Nebraska at Omaha is committed to fostering the academic and scholarly pursuits of faculty, staff, and students. In the 2018- 2019 Academic Year, UNO has continued to invest in a multitude of funding programs to promote research and creative activity. This year’s programs provided over $580,000 for a broad range of projects that reflect the varied scholarly interests of the UNO community: genetic changes in Great Plains bees as a result of fire frequency, the economic impact of free higher education, a virtual reality media arts gallery, investigating different factors which affect how squirrels run and jump, …
The Evolution Of Educational Rights Of School Officials And Parents Of Disabled Students: A Review Of Related Litigation, Laura C. Pawlak
The Evolution Of Educational Rights Of School Officials And Parents Of Disabled Students: A Review Of Related Litigation, Laura C. Pawlak
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This study attempts to examine the evolution of the rights of parents of students with disabilities. For more than 40 years since President Gerald Ford signed Public Law 94-142, The Education for All Handicapped Children Act, into law, the ability for parents to advocate for their child with a disability continues to evolve. At the same time, school officials continue to care for all students in loco parentis, advocating to have the educational needs of children met.
Often, when parents and school officials meet around the table to plan an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for a student with a disability, …

Four semi-structured interviews were conducted at a midsized university in the Midwest with college women in various positions of organizational leadership. The researcher identified motivational factors for women to apply for leadership positions as well as described the social support network that exists for college women in positions of leadership. Challenges college women face in achieving higher leadership positions were also identified. Lastly, recommendations were made for student affairs professionals and women in leadership based on the research findings.
Work-Life Balance Of Tenured And Tenure-Track Women Engineering Professors, Lily Giang-Tien Gossage
Work-Life Balance Of Tenured And Tenure-Track Women Engineering Professors, Lily Giang-Tien Gossage
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Balancing the needs of family with career ambitions is often challenging for women who pursue science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) careers, particularly in academia. In these male-dominated workplaces, few incentives exist for women who decide to manage both work and family. In this basic qualitative research study, a modified approach combining in-depth interviewing with life-history interviewing was used to examine the work-life balance experiences of 12 tenured and tenure-track women engineering faculty who have children. The research question addressed participants' perceptions of engineering academia and experiences regarding family formation, child-raising, and the tenure process. Data were analyzed using the …
Community College Leaders’ Strategies To Recruit Quality Faculty, Charmelia Butler
Community College Leaders’ Strategies To Recruit Quality Faculty, Charmelia Butler
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Human resource (HR) directors at academic institutions work to fill vacant teaching positions with skilled educators in colleges and universities. Unemployment in the United States declined to 5% in December 2015, creating placement issues for HR directors. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies that community college HR directors used to recruit qualified faculty for teaching positions to increase institutional performance. The targeted population for the study included 5 HR directors from community colleges in northern Texas. To meet the criteria for inclusion in the study, candidates had to be employed as an HR director at …
Adaptation Of Heart Failure Education Materials For The Middle Eastern Population, Nadine A. Williams
Adaptation Of Heart Failure Education Materials For The Middle Eastern Population, Nadine A. Williams
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Cardiovascular disease, including heart failure, is the leading cause of death among male and female Middle Eastern Americans. In 2016, a medical center located in the northeastern region of the United States had an estimated 35% of heart failure patients readmitted within 30 days of discharge, 10% of these readmitted patients belonged to the local Middle Eastern community. The gap in nursing practice noted by nursing staff, patients, and their families was that the patient education materials on heart failure were not tailored to the cultural beliefs and customs of this high-risk population. The purpose of this project was to …
Educational Success Of Low-Income And First Generation College Students In Private Colleges Of China, Yinghui Chen
Educational Success Of Low-Income And First Generation College Students In Private Colleges Of China, Yinghui Chen
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
In China, low-income and first generation college students in private institutions are faced with adversities which undermine their educational outcome. Since the previous researches are mainly deficit-focused, the researcher conducted an investigation which put emphasis on the students’ successful educational outcome in order to round out the knowledge of this problem. The researcher employed a qualitative multiple case study to explore how three students accomplished educational resilience despite their hardships. The researcher findings suggested that: 1) Internal locus of control, career and academic planning, financial aids, job-related experience, and rational occupational aspiration contribute to students’ educational success; 2) The primary …

A First Step: Analyzing The Professional Quality Of Life Of U.S. College Mental Health Counselors, Jeffrey Yoichi Kuroiwa
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The study used a demographic questionnaire and the Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL) to conduct a national survey of mental health counselors (N = 236) working at colleges and universities in the United States. It was hypothesized that U.S. college mental health counselors would indicate higher than average scores on the ProQOL subscales for compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress. The results show that U.S. college mental health counselors indicate average potential for compassion satisfaction and average risk for developing burnout and secondary traumatic stress. It was also hypothesized that counselors' ProQOL scores would differ between gender, age, …

Problem and Purpose
Much research has been done in past years on the topic of student achievement, with most of those studies focusing on factors that contribute to student achievement.
