Student Perceptions Of Academic Advisement At A Public Suburban Community College: A Qualitative Case Study, Amanda L. Fox

Theses and Dissertations

This research study examined student perceptions of advisement experiences with a primary role advisor in a centralized advising office. The intent was to explore the connection between academic advising and student connectedness to the institution. This study utilized Tinto’s theory of student departure to provide an understanding of how student success can be impacted by institutional relationships, particularly in a community college environment. Tinto asserted that a student’s decision to stay or depart from an institution was largely impacted by interactions and relationships between the student and other members of the institution (Tinto, 1975). This study aimed to explore students’ …

The Relevance Of Ethical Standards Among Veteran Superintendents, Kevin Scanlon

Theses and Dissertations

Ethical violations in education exist worldwide. Superintendents of schools are in the unique position of exerting their authority and influence on the entire community. They also contend with ethically challenging situations. The purpose of the study is to determine the extent to which superintendents are influenced more by their experiences versus their training in ethical standards when ethically challenging situations confront them. In response to ethical issues that have occurred in education, academic institutions and districts have attempted to rectify the issue by further training and practices. This study determined that existing superintendents in New York utilize their own experiences …

Leadership Practices, Self-Efficacy, And Role Expectations Of Community College Academic Leaders During Change, Elizabeth Kristen Gandt Spagnola

Theses and Dissertations

Higher education institutions in the United States currently face ongoing challenges and difficulties beginning in 2008 with the fiscal crisis which created a need for education and retraining for man, demand for greater accountability by institutions and a fundamental shift in the perceived value of higher education. Academic leaders of post-secondary institutions, in particular community colleges, have encountered this shift in society's view of the value of a college degree, and now see a demand for greater skills and employability within the workforce. For academic leaders to meet these new expectations, an understanding of leadership styles, focused on the characterization …

Environmental Attitudes Of Community College Students Concerning Age, Gender, And Race, Robert W. Fournier Jan 2022

Environmental Attitudes Of Community College Students Concerning Age, Gender, And Race, Robert W. Fournier

Theses and Dissertations

Many studies have shown the mental, physical, and academic benefits of environmental education to students. Equally important, environmental education can develop our students into more environmentally minded citizens. However, we are learning that most students are not receiving accurate environmental information while in school, which may impact their attitudes toward the environment and subsequent actions to protect it. Understanding current college-aged students' (Generation Z's) attitudes toward the environment are critical as they are next in line to make political and business decisions that will affect our planet. Using the New Ecological Paradigm Scale (NEP), 1,556 community college students were surveyed …

Stigmatized Discretion: A Survey Of The Impact Of Stigma Associated With Substance Use Disorder On The Hiring Of Teachers In Recovery, Nick Hoskins Roberts

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of stigma associated with substance use disorder (SUD) on the hiring of teacher-applicants in recovery. The ongoing opioid epidemic has dealt many disastrous blows to the United States, particularly in the Appalachian region of the country. As the coal industry was declining in the 1990s and 2000s, prescription opioids flooded the state of West Virginia, bringing with them a dwindling economy and a rise in crime rates, unemployment, and overdoses. Recent legislation has helped in pharmaceutical accountability/regulation and recovery options for individuals suffering from SUD. As more people in recovery …

Public institutions of higher education have seen mandatory state budget cuts for more than 20 years, with each year’s cut being larger than the previous. These statewide education cuts have affected academic libraries in a major way, resulting in purchasing cutbacks, decreased subscription renewals and cancellations.

Purchasing cutbacks have meant fewer physical book …

Chapter 12: A Shared Vision For Online Teaching Effectiveness Of K-12 Steam Minority Teachers, Abeni El-Amin Ph.D., Saundra Johnson Austin

Management Faculty Publications

This chapter presents a model to improve the online teaching effectiveness of K-12 science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) educators who teach underrepresented minority (URM) students. Further, K-12 institutions must consider the imperative by creating a STEAM professional advocacy network (SPAN) through which the online teaching effectiveness of K-12 STEAM teachers is improved. Ultimately, SPAN seeks to broaden the participation of URM students in STEAM from high-need, racially diverse learning environments nationwide. There is an initiated three-phase process through SPAN that begins with a pre-launch phase to convene an advisory board. The three phases of SPAN are program implementation, …

Professional Development-Key To Retention Of Rural Principals?, Dawn Martin, Jason M. Clemensen Jan 2022

Professional Development-Key To Retention Of Rural Principals?, Dawn Martin, Jason M. Clemensen

Faculty Submissions

Building principals wear many hats, not the least of which is instructional leader. Leading curriculum, instruction and school improvement efforts can be overwhelming to leaders who must also tend to the management and operational demands of the job. Rural leaders are often expected to assume even greater responsibilities with considerably less support. Although expected to design and provide professional development for others, insufficient time and funding often prevent the leader from engaging in his/her own learning and growth.
This article describes the efforts of one university to provide relevant, low-or-no-cost
professional development opportunities as a service to building leaders and …

Faculty Facilitation Of Help-Seeking On Campus: A Phenomenological Study, Lillian V. Clark Jan 2022

Faculty Facilitation Of Help-Seeking On Campus: A Phenomenological Study, Lillian V. Clark

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An ever-increasing number of students on college campuses are experiencing distress, and not all students in need of care are being reached (Kitzrow, 2009, LeViness, et al., 2019). Faculty are one of the most valuable resources for identifying and connecting students to care (Kitzrow, 2009). Despite this, we know very little about the experiences of faculty working with students in distress. This study sought to understand those experiences, as well as identify the barriers to connecting students to care. A qualitative study using an Interpretive Phenomenology framework was conducted (Smith & Osborn, 2007, Moustakas, 1994). Four themes were interpreted from …

Implications For Educational Equity Due To Master Scheduling Decisions Made By Site Administrators, Rachel Pittman Jan 2022

Implications For Educational Equity Due To Master Scheduling Decisions Made By Site Administrators, Rachel Pittman

CGU Theses & Dissertations

It is well documented that excellent teachers are not equitably distributed among students in traditional public high schools. Research shows teacher labor market economics and the micropolitics of schooling significantly facilitate the migration of excellent teachers between districts and schools and within schools so the teachers may secure course assignments that house the most academically successful students. No study has yet addressed within-school assignment of teachers made by site administrators through the mechanism known as the Master Schedule. This dissertation examined the factors that influence teacher–course pairing decisions made by site administrators in traditional high school settings in California and …

A Phenomenological Study Of The Stem Identity Experiences Of Women Stem Faculty Who Obtain Federal Grants, Nicole Whetstine

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore how STEM identity development influences the experiences of women STEM faculty who obtained federal grant funding. Data was collected from semi-structured interviews conducted with ten full-time women faculty in STEM employed at U.S. postsecondary institutions who were or were previously lead investigator on a federal grant. Herlihy and Campbell's (2018) socio-cultural-STEM identity theoretical framework informed the data analysis. Findings from the study revealed four primary ways in which participants were positively influenced in STEM including: (a) having supportive interactions with others; (b) being encouraged by others; (c) finding connections with …
