Analyzing Arkansas's Course Credit And Unexcused Absence Policy, Sarah Mckenzie, Josh Mcgee, Sarah R. Morris
Policy Briefs
In this brief, we examine the implementation of A.C.A 6-18-222, a statewide policy in Arkansas that addresses the unexcused absences and course credit. We find wide variability in the policy’s local implementation. We suggest districts examine their thresholds and language in this policy, and implement Early Warning Intervention and Monitoring Systems to improve school culture.

“I’M Here, I Can Help”: Supporting Southeast Asian American Community College Students, Johanna M. Tigert, Phitsamay S. Uy, Argyro A. Armstrong, Francine Coston, Elias Nader
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
This study examined the experiences of Asian American students with one community college’s student services: Writing Center, Financial Aid Center, and Asian American Student Center (AASC). Data included survey responses, focus group interviews, and individual student interviews. Chi square tests were conducted to see if there were significant differences in participants’ responses based on ethnicity (Cambodian/Khmer vs. other), gender, and age (traditionally vs. non-traditionally aged). Focus group and individual interview data were analyzed thematically. Results showed that about half of the students had accessed the Writing Center and the AASC, while over 85% accessed the Financial Aid Center. There were …
Examining The Impact Of Covid-19 On Elementary-Aged Minoritized Students, Ashlynn Ramirez
Examining The Impact Of Covid-19 On Elementary-Aged Minoritized Students, Ashlynn Ramirez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The Coronavirus Disease [COVID-19] pandemic was a public health crisis. As of January 2022, there were over 314 million infections and over 5.5 million deaths (Assefa et al., 2022). Unfortunately, COVID-19 disproportionately impacted minoritized populations. This study will investigate the relationship between COVID-19 and the impact on minoritized students attending Title I elementary schools in one urban school district. According to Lopez-Ibor (2006), "disasters are diverse events as a consequence of a danger that affects social groups and produces material and human losses resulting in insufficient resources of the community and insufficient coping through social mechanisms" (p. 22). COVID-19 affected …

Learning Gains Post Covid-19 Disruption: The Predictive Value Of Sense Of Belonging, Teacher Efficacy, And School Fit, Deborah Izzo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The study explores predictive associations between student perceptions of a sense of belonging, teacher perceptions of teaching efficacy, family perceptions of school fit, and academic growth within a post-COVID-19 shutdown landscape. Learning loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic instructional disruption can have long-lasting impacts, necessitating instructional interventions that aim to close learning gaps and increase learning gains (UNESCO, 2020). Drawing from 5 global datasets, the World Bank simulation conducted in 2021 projected a COVID-19 school closure learning loss range of .3 to 1.1 years, the range attributed to 4 possible scenarios with converse intervals of closure and effectiveness of mitigation …
The Impact Of The Multi-Tiered System Of Supports (Mtss) And The Role Instructional Leaders And Teachers Have On The Implementation Of An Mtss Framework, Stephanie Crim
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The purpose of this study was to determine instructional leaders and instructional faculty's knowledge of a Multi-Tiered System of Supports Framework as an intervention tool to support struggling students. The study analyzed instructional staff knowledge of the definition, purpose, and implementation of an MTSS Framework. This study also evaluated the extent to which school-based leadership utilizes MTSS data to inform decisions related to intervention around academics, behavior, and social-emotional learning. The results of the study indicated that school-based leaders had limited knowledge of the definition and purpose of a Multi-Tiered System of Support Framework. Instructional staff also had limited knowledge …

Employing Organizational Theory And Strategic Enrollment Management To Private School Student Enrollment, Jessica Adams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This correlational, quantitative study examined if any relationship existed between Bolman and Deal's Organizational Theory and Strategic Enrollment Management in regard to a private, Christian school's enrollment. The study used four years of historical survey data, five years of enrollment data, and cross-referenced data points to find any similarities or common threads as to areas that could potentially be plaguing the enrollment numbers. The population of this study or unit of analysis included the following groups: 3rd-6th students, 7th-12th students, K-12th parents, and all faculty and staff. Historical survey data from focused climate and culture surveys completed through the EProve, …
Brave Spaces And Social Emotional Learning Strategies In The Theatre Classroom: What Do They Mean For All Students, Including Those Who Identify As Lgbtqia+?, John Payne-Rios
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The purpose of this study was to examine the high school experiences of theatre students at a large university in Central Florida to determine which of the Collective for Academic and Social Emotional Learning's (CASEL) five social-emotional learning strategies (SEL 5) were remembered (CASEL, 2022). An opt-in focus group of students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, or asexual (LGBTQIA+) and were involved in K-12 theatre were interviewed to examine if the SEL 5 strategies being utilized had a distinct impression on this vulnerable population (Krishan, et al., 2016). Due to scheduling, only one student was able …

The Impact Of Repeated Reading Intervention On Oral Reading Fluency For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd) In Saudi Arabia, Ahmed Al Naji
The Impact Of Repeated Reading Intervention On Oral Reading Fluency For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd) In Saudi Arabia, Ahmed Al Naji
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The prevalence rate of learners with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has risen concurrently with their inclusion into public schools in Saudi Arabia. Being in schools, they face academic challenges, particularly in reading. This increased rate evokes the importance of implementing valuable strategies to keep up the academic skills of those students. These students require Evidence-Based Practices (EBPs), which have been demonstrated crucial for their reading development. Nevertheless, limited research has been done on examining the efficacy of EBPs used to enhance the reading skills of learners with ASD, especially their Oral Reading Fluency (ORF). This study used an effective approach …

Building A World-Class Learning System: Insights From Some Top-Performing School Systems, Geoff N. Masters
School and system improvement
The result of a multi-year study, this book explores how five school systems - British Columbia, Estonia, Finland, Hong Kong and South Korea - have been rethinking and reforming their schools systems. It addresses questions including: What policies need to be in place for every child to experience an engaging and supportive learning environment that motivates not only high performance but a desire to keep learning? What do students really need to know and be able to do to thrive in a changing world? How can systems engage in ongoing improvement while also cultivating innovation? The book provides a framework …
Collaborative Challenges Between Educational Accessibility Coordinators And Adjunct Faculty In Supporting Autism Spectrum Students, Tamara Faure, Pietro Antonio Sasso
Collaborative Challenges Between Educational Accessibility Coordinators And Adjunct Faculty In Supporting Autism Spectrum Students, Tamara Faure, Pietro Antonio Sasso
New York Journal of Student Affairs
Accessibility of educational accommodations has increased but can be frequently inconsistent for undergraduates with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The didactic relationship between educational accessibility staff with faculty, who are increasingly adjuncts, facilitates many course-learning accommodations. This descriptive phenomenological study explored the perceptions and professional experiences of educational accessibility coordinators with adjunct faculty in their implementation of learning accommodation for undergraduates with ASD. Findings from this study suggested that accessibility coordinators negotiated expectations of unprepared adjunct faculty and ASD students to address issues throughout the semester.
Coordinators believed ASD students struggled to navigate their experiences with adjunct professors because they were …
Lgbtq Community College Students’ Decreased Sense Of Belonging, Joseph Falco, Michael Sparrow Ed.D.
Lgbtq Community College Students’ Decreased Sense Of Belonging, Joseph Falco, Michael Sparrow Ed.D.
New York Journal of Student Affairs
LGBTQ students experience a lower sense of belonging at community colleges. The correlation between campus and classroom climate and academic success, campus involvement, identity, level of outness, and well-being for LGBTQ students contributes to their decreased sense of belonging. Non-LGBTQ-affirming and non-inclusive community college campuses and classrooms lead to feelings of fear, invisibility, lack of validation, mental health challenges, and poor academic performance for LGBTQ students. An extensive literature review was conducted to determine the root causes around the decreased sense of belonging for LGBTQ students enrolled at community colleges. Three themes emerged that explained this decreased sense of belonging: …
Increasing Study Abroad Participation Among Historically Excluded Students, Daniel J. Scanlon, Kimberly A. Kline
Increasing Study Abroad Participation Among Historically Excluded Students, Daniel J. Scanlon, Kimberly A. Kline
New York Journal of Student Affairs
Higher education has yet to address the deeper causes of inequities in student participation rates in study abroad programs across student demographics. Factors contributing to inequities include disparities in access to social and cultural capital and neglect of identity-related experiences of racially minoritized and first-generation, historically excluded students. This qualitative study examined faculty and staff experiences in the development of study abroad programs and explored their considerations for the needs of historically excluded students. A consensus among interview participants indicated a significant role for intentionality throughout the processes of program development, recruitment outreach, and preparation of students for the study …
College For What . . . How Middle School Students From Low Socioeconomic Backgrounds Perceived Post-Secondary Education, Michelle Patrick
College For What . . . How Middle School Students From Low Socioeconomic Backgrounds Perceived Post-Secondary Education, Michelle Patrick
Dissertations
This study examines the attitudes and perceptions of middle school students from low socioeconomic backgrounds about attending post-secondary institutions. As research continues to explore the experiences of traditional high school students from low socioeconomic backgrounds and students' attendance into post-secondary institutions, research concerning middle school students from low socioeconomic backgrounds preparedness for college attendance has been limited. Using a phenomenological research design to obtain the study's results from fifteen students and thirteen parent interviews provided insight into the “lived experience” of the students’ and parents' attitudes and perceptions regarding college attendance. The study found that regardless of the parents’ and …

Purpose: The present phenomenological study aims to understand the experience of international doctoral students in U.S. EA programs. The present research was guided by the question: “What is the essence of international postgraduate student experiences in EA programs in the United States?” Methodology: The present study used hermeneutic phenomenology to describe and interpret data from …
Women's Experience Of Work-Life Integration And Infertility, Angela Fant
Women's Experience Of Work-Life Integration And Infertility, Angela Fant
ETD Archive
The challenges and rewards experienced by participating in both work and life roles for women with children is well documented in the work-life literature. The negative effect of infertility on women is also well documented in the literature. However, there is insufficient research on the work-family interface for women employed in full-time paid positions who experience primary infertility. Given this deficiency, this study investigated how the experience of infertility influences work-life integration for full-time employed women. This research explored the ways work-life integration is distinct and unique for this population, knowing that infertility is a distressing and stigmatized experience. A …

Teachers And Administrators' Perceptions Of The Implementation Of District Student Conduct Procedures., Amy Ghibaudy
Teachers And Administrators' Perceptions Of The Implementation Of District Student Conduct Procedures., Amy Ghibaudy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While there is a body of research about student conduct policies and procedures, there is a lack of research about how different role groups work together to implement these procedures and have a positive working interpersonal relationship. This sequential mixed methods case study design takes place in a large urban school district. In this study, I investigate the perceptions that educators have on the implementation of student conduct procedures in their school. I also explore how their perceptions of each other shape their interpersonal relationships. I used Normalization Process Theory (NPT) as my guiding theoretical framework. This study drew upon …
