The Interrelationship Of Leader Self-Actualization And Life Stressors To The Resultant Incidence Of Reported Medical Problems Of Middle Management Educators, John S. Thatcher Aug 1980

The Interrelationship Of Leader Self-Actualization And Life Stressors To The Resultant Incidence Of Reported Medical Problems Of Middle Management Educators, John S. Thatcher

Dissertations

Schools, being a part of the larger social system, have not escaped the increasing pressures evident in our society. The principalship as an important component of the educational process has not enjoyed immunity from this same problem.

Because school principals are individuals, they react differently to life stressors. Some appear to have the ability to handle all stressors without suffering any onset of medical problems. Others appear not to have this immunity and as a result have medical difficulties. Because of this seeming difference and because of a lack of research of this type in education, the relationships between life …

An Examination Of Potential Problems That May Be Encountered In The Administration Of An Educational Corporation In The Management Of Medical Doctors, Kathy Anne Hulst House Aug 1980

An Examination Of Potential Problems That May Be Encountered In The Administration Of An Educational Corporation In The Management Of Medical Doctors, Kathy Anne Hulst House

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine various management problems that may exist in the administrative setting when the group being managed has as much or more education and/or experience than the manager. Specifically, the nature of medical training and education in medical schools was proposed to affect the groups of medical doctors, both salaried by the corporation and volunteers, in the managerial setting when the manager was required to operate the educational facility as a business in the profit-making sense as opposed to the hospital setting where the doctors may be less concerned about cost factors. The congruence …

A Method For Community Education Directors To Identify Activities Which Are Potential Time Wasters, Frank Glenn Cookingham Aug 1980

A Method For Community Education Directors To Identify Activities Which Are Potential Time Wasters, Frank Glenn Cookingham

Dissertations

This study was designed for three purposes. First, an instrument, called the Time Allocation Inventory (TAI), was developed for community education directors to use in estimating the effects of allocating time to activities often classified as time wasters. Second, the reliability and types of information produced by two methods of scoring responses to the instrument were compared. Third, the effects of two different sets of conditions on responses to the instrument were investigated.

A time waster was defined as an activity which, in relation to another activity, is less effective in accomplishing desired goals or objectives within a specified time …

An Analysis Of Teacher Morale And Absenteeism In A Declining Enrollment School District, Terry M. Booth Aug 1980

An Analysis Of Teacher Morale And Absenteeism In A Declining Enrollment School District, Terry M. Booth

Dissertations

The major purposes of this 3-year ex post facto case study were to ascertain if a relationship exists between the rate of teacher absenteeism and program curtailments, necessitated by financial problems resulting from declining enrollments, and the morale of teachers. Specifically, this study analyzed the absence pattern of those teachers affected by building closings, academic reassignment, and notification of layoff, over a 3-year period, to determine their relationship to absenteeism.

The study was conducted in the East Detroit Public Schools, East Detroit, Michigan. The 476 full-time professional teachers employed during the 3 years of the study comprised the total sample …

Administrative Preparedness: Perceptions Of Problems And Qualifications, William Joseph Banach Aug 1980

Administrative Preparedness: Perceptions Of Problems And Qualifications, William Joseph Banach

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to provide information which will stimulate a forecasting of educational problems and encourage a review of administrative training programs.

The purpose of the study was operationalized through three objectives: (1) to determine whether incongruencies existed between qualifications administrators perceived themselves having and educational problems they identified; (2) to investigate whether administrators and the public perceived the same educational problems; and, (3) to determine if the training needs administrators expressed were related to the educational problems they identified.

The study focused on administrative perceptions of problems and qualifications for the periods 1978-79, 1979-80 and 1980-85. …

A Study Of The Possible Implications Of Current Institutional Practices On The Future Of International Higher Education And A Broader Higher Education Bubble, Tamer Khadre

Capstone Collection

The hypothesis of a higher education bubble in the United States is one that has been discussed in literature for a number of years, with parallels being drawn to the inflation and deflation of prices of commodities in industries such as housing and the stock market. This study examines the applicability of such a hypothesis to the international education sector of the higher education industry in the United States. The focus of this study is (a) the perceived impact of current institutional practices in the field of international education on the long term viability of the field overall and (b) …

Focusing Faculty Development: Targeting, John Sharpham, Lanny Morreau

POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education

Faculty development programs usually provide a variety of services for interested faculty. Much of what is provided is stressed as a service, available on a walk-in, voluntary basis, and tends to be focused on the university faculty as a whole. This approach requires the faculty to be initiators, asking them to avail themselves of the services available, and therefore supports active, self-motivated teachers. Centra's findings on faculty development practices underlined this when he identified "... teachers who wanted to get better" as the group "most involved, while those needed improvement were seen as least involved" (1976, p. 29).

Also, the …
