Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Focused on academic program review in Mississippi public universities, this case study describes how a statewide evaluation process led to the proposed elimination of an undergraduate French program despite favorable consultant assessment. The piece recounts the review structure, the role of external consultants, the use of mission statements by governing boards, and the conflict between consultant reports and administrative summaries. It also documents responses from faculty, professional organizations, alumni, and national higher education groups, emphasizing concerns about transparency, liberal arts education, and the ethical use of external evaluation. An Examination And Analysis Of The Department Of Special Education In The Muskegon Heights Public Schools, Doristine Louise Minott Aug 1984

An Examination And Analysis Of The Department Of Special Education In The Muskegon Heights Public Schools, Doristine Louise Minott

Masters Theses

This project was undertaken so that an indepth view of the role of the director of special education and the Department of Special Education, Muskegon Heights Public Schools, could be observed. While there are many facets in the Department, much of the time was spent reviewing the Michigan Department of Education Administrative Manual for Special Education, working on administrative skills, and getting a feel for operating the Department.

It was determined that the Department is a very complex one indeed. Because policies change so often from the state level, it is often difficult to stay abreast of things. Therefore the …

Chairman Burnout And Productivity: An Inverse Relationship, Robert N. Bostrom Aug 1984

Chairman Burnout And Productivity: An Inverse Relationship, Robert N. Bostrom

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Chairperson burnout is examined as a problem created by role ambiguity, high administrative expectations, limited authority, and reduced access to rewarding faculty activities. The article describes the academic chairperson as positioned between faculty and administration, expected to manage faculty concerns, departmental coordination, research support, instruction, records, personnel, and institutional paperwork without the full power often needed to enforce decisions. It connects these conditions to stress, declining morale, and reduced administrative effectiveness. The article also considers whether continued research productivity may help chairpersons preserve a faculty identity and resist burnout. By linking administrative strain to productivity, role conflict, and professional recognition, …

Exorcising Some Devils, August W. Staub Aug 1984

Exorcising Some Devils, August W. Staub

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article reflects on theatre administration as a form of leadership grounded in judgment, responsibility, personality, and practical experience. It responds to discussions of theatre administration by distinguishing management and organization from leadership, suggesting that administrative effectiveness depends less on formal training than on the capacity to make timely decisions and accept accountability. The article addresses common concerns in departmental leadership, including rapid judgment, communication, delegation, and professional exhaustion, and reframes these concerns as conditions that administrators must manage directly rather than avoid. It emphasizes the role of a single accountable leader in drama department administration, especially where production, pedagogy, …

Administrative Burnout: A Woman’S Perspective, Lorayne W. Lester Aug 1984

Administrative Burnout: A Woman’S Perspective, Lorayne W. Lester

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines administrative burnout among women in higher education, with particular attention to theatre administration and male dominated university structures. It describes burnout as a condition shaped by workload, conflicting demands, isolation, limited support, and repeated challenges to professional authority. The article argues that women administrators often experience different pressures than men because of scarce peer networks, institutional paternalism, gendered expectations, and unequal access to informal systems of advice, sponsorship, and recognition. It situates these pressures within communication administration and academic leadership by connecting personal experience to broader concerns about faculty governance, administrative support, professional identity, and organizational culture. …

The Technical Speech Communication Course: A View From The Field, Andrew D. Wolvin, Diana Corley Aug 1984

The Technical Speech Communication Course: A View From The Field, Andrew D. Wolvin, Diana Corley

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Technical speech communication is analyzed as a basic course designed for students preparing for professional and technical careers. The article argues that communication training is increasingly important in fields such as business, health, education, agriculture, and technology, where workers rely on listening, interpersonal interaction, small group communication, informative briefings, and presentations. It describes a career focused course model that connects communication theory and practice to students’ major fields through interviews, field specific research, panels, and briefings. Survey responses from former students are used to evaluate communication activities and skills most frequently needed in work settings. The article contributes to communication …
