The Academic Workplace: Perception Versus Reality, Sandra E. Elman Oct 1989

The Academic Workplace: Perception Versus Reality, Sandra E. Elman

New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications

Why are faculty becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the quality of the academic workplace? What accounts for burnout and low morale among so many college and university faculty? Is work life for professionals any more satisfying in the business world? What can academic leaders learn from business executives who work vigorously to reenergize their enterprises? Are corporate strategies aimed at enhancing the quality of work life applicable to improving satisfaction and productivity in our colleges and universities?

These concerns were addressed by a number of education leaders at a conference on faculty work life jointly sponsored by the New England Resource …

An Apology For The Ph.D. Degree In Theatre: A Personal Retrospective, David W. Addington Oct 1989

An Apology For The Ph.D. Degree In Theatre: A Personal Retrospective, David W. Addington

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article offers a personal, historically grounded defense of the PhD in theatre, contextualizing its erosion amid the ascendance of the Master of Fine Arts and changing higher education policy. Through narrative reflection, it documents the decline of doctoral programs, administrative neglect, and labor market contraction, then contrasts the scholarly rigor, disciplinary identity, and research oriented training of the PhD with the practice centered MFA. The discussion maps comprehensive curricular demands, foreign language proficiency, and dissertation requirements onto professional pathways, demonstrating how such breadth cultivates critical theory literacy, historiographic competence, and instructional versatility. Examining technological advances, demographic shifts, and renewed …

The Usitt Evaluation Guidelines: How Do We Use Them? Where Do We Go From Here?, Lucy Nowell Oct 1989

The Usitt Evaluation Guidelines: How Do We Use Them? Where Do We Go From Here?, Lucy Nowell

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article analyzes the United States Institute for Theatre Technology evaluation guidelines and their implications for tenure and promotion decisions affecting theatre design and technology faculty. Grounded in professional practice literature, it traces how workload inflation, unsafe studio conditions, and inequitable compensation erode artistic productivity, career longevity, and departmental morale, while also discouraging recruitment of graduate technologists. Narrative evidence and survey data illustrate systemic burnout and attrition among technical directors, costumers, and designers, prompting a call for labor budget planning, transparent performance metrics, and balanced recognition of creative scholarship. The discussion links faculty evaluation with student learning, occupational safety, and …

Workload Policies For Theatre Faculty And Staff At Columbus College, Hazel E. Hall Oct 1989

Workload Policies For Theatre Faculty And Staff At Columbus College, Hazel E. Hall

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines workload policies for theatre faculty within a teaching oriented college in the Georgia University System. Through descriptive review of institutional practice, it contrasts lecture, laboratory, lecture laboratory, one on one, and extended laboratory courses, detailing how student instructor contact hours, rather than credit hours, more accurately capture instructional effort in performance oriented pedagogy. The discussion highlights strategies such as piggybacking courses, applying two thirds to one credit for individual instruction, and adopting three to one calculations for production laboratories, thereby aligning faculty release time with actual preparation and supervision demands. By comparing theatre workload practices with those …

The Employability Of Graduates Of Liberal Arts Programs, Al Weitzel Aug 1989

The Employability Of Graduates Of Liberal Arts Programs, Al Weitzel

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines the employability of speech communication and liberal arts graduates, assessing claims about career outcomes through a review of empirical studies, national surveys, and employer perceptions. While some data suggest liberal studies graduates perform competitively in long term professional advancement, particularly in managerial roles, findings reveal that immediate employment prospects remain limited due to employer preferences for business and technical degrees. The article critiques optimistic narratives that overstate workforce demand for communication majors, instead calling for more accurate academic advising and targeted institutional strategies to improve graduate outcomes. These include integrating career planning into curricula, cultivating business partnerships, …
