Increasing Sensitivity To Diversity: Empowering Students, Mary Anne Johnston

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

This paper describes a model program for increasing sensitivity to diversity in an academic environment. To improve the learning environment for all students, faculty developers provide educational programs that enhance the faculty's understanding of differences related to gender, race, ethnicity, culture, religion, sexual orientation, and physical abilities. This report highlights the process of working closely with students to design and implement an orientation program for first-year students to increase an awareness of the influence of diversity on their learning and working together.

Challenging Values: Conflict, Contradiction, And Pedagogy, Jacqueline Mintz Jan 1994

Challenging Values: Conflict, Contradiction, And Pedagogy, Jacqueline Mintz

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The current crises of economics, demographics, retention, and disgruntled faculty, along with the neglect of the national mission to educate our citizenry for a democratic society, offer an opportunity on the cusp of the millennium to reflect about our values and the values of traditional American education. The literature of travel and cultural studies provides new lenses to help us and our institutions expose deeply held beliefs, assumptions, and the actions that have been taken in their names. Uncovering these beliefs can enable us as educators to reconstruct a common mission through developing a dynamic pedagogy for today 's students, …

Creating Teaching And Learning Partnerships With Students: Helping Faculty Listen To Student Voices, Helen Rallis Jan 1994

Creating Teaching And Learning Partnerships With Students: Helping Faculty Listen To Student Voices, Helen Rallis

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Teaching effectively involves developing a partnership with our students based on mutual respect and trust. The first part of this paper provides a way in which we can initiate or further develop this partnership by inviting our students to tell us about themselves. Readers are shown how to become more aware of the diverse ways in which students learn and, hence, how to expand both teaching methods and content. The second part of the paper presents suggestions for facilitating a faculty development workshop on this topic. It shows how-by engaging in discussion with other faculty about our students' concerns-we can …

An Investigation Of The Communication Skills And Communication Needs Of Academic And Civil Service Administrators, Earl E. Mcdowell

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article presents a study which is designed to determine the level of importance of communication skills for academic and civil service administrators in an academic setting. Two samples of administrators participated in the study, including 120 academic administrators and 120 civil service administrators from a midwestern university. The questionnaires were sent through campus mail to random samples of academic administrators and civil service administrators. Exploratory analyses were completed to determine if differences existed between genders. The results basically show that gender is not a good discriminating variable because of the high within group variances and limited between group variances. …

Field Study On Quality Review In Illinois, Melinda Brookens Ostergren Jan 1994

Field Study On Quality Review In Illinois, Melinda Brookens Ostergren

Masters Theses

The Illinois State Recognition Program, otherwise known as Quality Review, has stringent rules for documenting compliance with requirements regarding information on student demographics, outcomes, assessment standards, expectations, plans for improvement, and reporting that information to the public in a meaningful way. This field study provides new formats for the scoring rubric and auditors' Interpretive Key for the state rules and regulations which make them easier to understand. In addition, it offers model forms for record-keeping so that preparing for an audit visit can be done efficiently, but it offers no solutions to the complex problem of generating change by altering …

Safe Places, Fair Practices, Trust: Sexual Harassment In Communication And Theatre, Robert J. Wills Jan 1994

Safe Places, Fair Practices, Trust: Sexual Harassment In Communication And Theatre, Robert J. Wills

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article discusses the role of school administrators in addressing sexual harassment in theater and communication programs. On college and university campuses, by and large, men have power. Women on campus by and large trust these men who have power. The trust in such a relationship is precious, built over time through consistency, responsiveness and mutual concerns. Sexual harassment breaks that trust, destroys it completely, and in the process wounds those who are involved. The 9 to 5 organization has concluded that a strong policy is the best way to combat sexual harassment. A written policy easily becomes both the …

Alternative Career Opportunities, Or, Don't Sell Yourself Short!, David Balthrop Jan 1994

Alternative Career Opportunities, Or, Don't Sell Yourself Short!, David Balthrop

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article will attempt to discuss who is making an attempt to prepare their students for work outside of the field of study; pose the question of whose responsibility is it for preparing those students: faculty, universities and colleges, or the students themselves. In a survey sent out to all colleges and universities in Kentucky, only a small percentage (fewer than 3%) of the surveys returned acknowledged any help in the form of organized, structured post-graduation job opportunity discussions. All the forms returned indicated that the students wanted and needed that type of instruction. In order to locate other job …

An Analysis Of The Payback Potential Of New Lighting Technology, James L. Cox Jan 1994

An Analysis Of The Payback Potential Of New Lighting Technology, James L. Cox

Masters Theses

Recent, energy saving improvements in lighting technology have been made involving the use of more efficient lamps, silver coated light reflectors, and electronic light ballasts. Research indicates that it is economically feasible to retrofit existing light fixtures to utilize the advantages of these developments. This process consists of the removal of all standard lamps and ballasts in each light fixture, the installation of a highly refined light reflector and the replacement of the existing lamps with brighter, more efficient ones. Standard magnetic ballasts are exchanged for more efficient electronic ballasts. Resulting is a light fixture that produces a comparable amount …

Relationships Among Selected Internal/External Variables Affecting Decision Making In The Roles/Functions Of Research University Provosts, Haldane F. Davies

Dissertations

Problem

In the business and corporate world, there exists a unique collection of proven decision-making tools, techniques, and management ideas. There is, however, no clear definition and empirical analysis relative to the nature of the relationships among internal/external variables as they influence decision-making in the research university provosts' roles and functions. It was the purpose of this study to investigate the effects of selected variables on provost decision-making within their many functions.

Method

The survey research method was used to study the relationships among selected variables affecting decision-making in the functions of research university provosts. An instrument was designed and …

The Regulation Of Teaching : Lessons From The National Schools Project, Max Angus Jan 1994

The Regulation Of Teaching : Lessons From The National Schools Project, Max Angus

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

It is conceivable that the present generation of Australian teachers has been engaged in more workplace reform over a longer period of time than any other occupational group. Teachers can recite a near-interminable list of changes to work practices initiated during the 70s and 80s which required revisions of content to be taught, changes in methods of instruction and the introduction of modified patterns of school organisation. Yet the more things change the more they appear the same. The salient features of schools of 20 years ago are salient today - classes of thirty of so students, dominated by teacher …

Student And Teacher Effects Of Elementary School Tracking: An Examination Of A Rural Georgia School District, David L. Strickland

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

This study examines the effects of homogeneous and heterogeneous ability grouping on teacher and student performance within three elementary schools in a rural Georgia school district. Research methodologies included an analyses of standardized achievement test scores, a teacher questionnaire, and individual interviews with teachers. The analyses of standardized test scores revealed that 2nd grade students who were heterogeneously grouped performed significantly better on math and verbal skills than 2nd grade students who were homogeneously grouped. Teacher questionnaire responses did not reveal significant differences between homogeneous and heterogeneous years in student self-esteem, discipline, or classroom management. However, teachers who had formerly …
