What I Believe About Leadership And Education, Todd M. Kress

Graduate Research Papers

Whether you are a leader reflecting on past experiences, a leader whom is adjusting to changes and motivating others to adjust to changes, a leader who is challenging him or herself and all others to continue education, or a leader who is serving every stakeholder involved in the school, you need to make sure that students are not missing out on the greatest educational experience they can possibly get. The students are the number one reason why anyone goes into education, and no matter what happens in our busy lives we need to remember that. Every student needs to be …

College- or university-wide events take place fairly often at academic institutions, and these events can easily provide honors programs the opportunity to offer a curricular focus based on the event. Herein, we describe a course centered on the sesquicentennial celebration of Butler University and the teaching model implemented to deliver the course.

Action Research For Instructional Improvement: Using Data To Enhance Student Learning At Your Institution, Constance E. Cook, Mary Wright, Christopher O'Neal

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Action research is a powerful tool that can be used by teaching centers to improve teaching and learning. This chapter describes an action research project conducted at the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching at the University of Michigan. The project concerns retention and attrition in science gateway courses, with particular attention given to the role of the teaching assistant. This chapter concludes with a discussion of six principles for teaching center staff who wish to conduct their own action research projects.

How Do You Handle This Situation? Responses By Faculty In Great Britain And The United States To Workshops On The Ethics Of Teaching, Miriam Rosalyn Diamond

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Faculty in the United States and Great Britain took part in workshops exploring educational ethics. Participants articulated concerns about balancing approachability with fairness, cross-cultural communication, conveying standards to students, and academic integrity. Responses to the session were positive, and both groups indicated an interest in continuing discourse on the topic. The groups differed on specific issues of interest, as well as feedback on the session. Some of these appear to be culturally influenced. Overall, this workshop presents a model for providing faculty with the opportunity to examine and formulate direction when dealing with ethical issues related to teaching.

The Scholarship Of Civic Engagement: Defining, Documenting, And Evaluating Faculty Work, Robert G. Bringle, Julie A. Hatcher, Patti H. Clayton Jan 2007

The Scholarship Of Civic Engagement: Defining, Documenting, And Evaluating Faculty Work, Robert G. Bringle, Julie A. Hatcher, Patti H. Clayton

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Civic engagement, which is presented as teaching, research, and service in and with the community, presents new challenges for evaluating faculty work as part of the reappointment, promotion, and tenure process. The nature of service-learning, professional service, and participatory action research are examined as faculty work that can be scholarly (i.e., well informed) and the basis of scholarship (i.e., contributing to a knowledge base). As such, examples of evidence for documenting the work and issues associated with evaluating dossiers are presented.

More Than An Id Number Or A Gpa: Developmental Advising In Honors, Jacqueline Klein, Lisa French, Pamela Degotardi

Honors in Practice Online Archive

Developmental advising is a common form of advisement used with students in honors programs; it is defined as a “special advising relationship with students that both stimulates and supports their quest for an enriched educational experience” (Ender, 1997, p. 171). In a developmental advising relationship, students continuously interact with the advisor to achieve personal and educational goals. The relationship goes beyond typical advising issues such as registration and class scheduling, tapping into academic competence, personal involvement, and developing life goals (Ender). According to Ender and Wilkie (2000), developmental advising is challenging yet supportive, thereby allowing students to learn from their …

Social Systems And Issues: Food & Culture: Honors Breadth Social Sciences Hnr 1340 (Freshman), Sarah Gordon

Honors in Practice Online Archive

This interdisciplinary course explores the complex roles of food and consumption in western and non-western cultures from pre-history to the present day, using socio-historical, developmental, and comparative approaches. Food and foodways are universal aspects of the human experience across time and geographical boundaries. This class investigates the relation of food to changing and static cultural values, beliefs, attitudes, rituals, and practices. We eat and consider how foods such as chocolate, sugar, potatoes, and insects have had an impact on different societies and cultures. We discuss current world events and issues related to food and hunger, health and disease.

Superintendent Leadership Style: A Gendered Discourse Analysis, Dawn C. Wallin, Carolyn Crippen Jan 2007

Superintendent Leadership Style: A Gendered Discourse Analysis, Dawn C. Wallin, Carolyn Crippen

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Using a blend of social constructionism, critical feminism, and dialogue theory, the discourse of nine Manitoba superintendents is examined to determine if it illustrates particular gendered assumptions regarding superintendents' leadership style. Qualitative inquiry and analysis methods were utilized to identify emerging themes, or topics of talk. Six topics of talk emerged in the discourse regarding leadership style. Since "talk is a form of social action worthy of study in itself" (Chase, 1995, p. 25), each of these topics was analyzed to illustrate how men and women in the superintendency in Manitoba negotiate a gendered social action when they talk about …

Preparing Future Faculty For Careers In Academic Librarianship: A Paradigm Shift For Collaboration In Higher Education, Sean Patrick Knowlton, Laura L. B. Border Jan 2007

Preparing Future Faculty For Careers In Academic Librarianship: A Paradigm Shift For Collaboration In Higher Education, Sean Patrick Knowlton, Laura L. B. Border

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Nationwide, tire number of available faculty positions represents only a fraction of the master’s and doctoral degrees granted each year. Fortunately, faculty positions are available in academic librarianship, which is experiencing a decline in qualified applicants. A pioneering collaboration between a graduate student professional development program and an academic library has created a fellowship program that allows master’s and doctoral students to consider careers in academic librarianship through mentored fellowships. Initial results show that participants intend to pursue librarianship as an academic career in which to use and expand their advanced subject and/or language expertise.

How Post–Tenure Review Can Support The Teaching Development Of Senior Faculty, Mary Deane Sorcinelli, Mei-Yau Shih, Mathew L. Ouellett, Marjory Stewart

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

A key question that campuses face as they develop and implement post-tenure review policies is how to blend the concepts of accountability and renewal. This chapter examines a faculty development initiative linked to a post-tenure review policy at a research-intensive university. It describes the goals, processes, and outcomes of a five-year study of the program, extending research on post-tenure review and its potential for positive faculty development.

Preparing First-Time Leaders For An Urban Public School District: An Action Research Study Of A Collaborative District-University Partnership, Juanita Cleaver Simmons, Margaret Grogan, Stacy Preis, Kristin Matthews, Sheila Smith-Anderson, Betty Porter Walls, Audrey Jackson

Education Faculty Articles and Research

This article reports the results for the first cycle of an action research study about a district-university partnership. Two district facilitators and two university facilitators co-constructed a principal preparation program for an innercity school district to help prepare the next generation of building leaders. Twenty-two students participated in the 15-month nontraditional program. The study found that in preparing first-time school leaders, the most helpful experiences were those that developed self-understanding and readiness for the role change. New instructional techniques and the full-time residency facilitated this learning. It also found that the partnership, though providing new and exciting opportunities to deviate …

A National Study Of Job Satisfaction Factors Among Faculty In Physician Assistant Education, Wallace D. Boeve Jan 2007

A National Study Of Job Satisfaction Factors Among Faculty In Physician Assistant Education, Wallace D. Boeve

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the job satisfaction factors for physician assistant (PA) faculty. Job satisfaction factors were divided into two categories: intrinsic factors about the respondents (work itself and opportunities for advancement) and extrinsic factors about the institutional faculty support (salary, supervisory support, and coworker relations). The theoretical approach used in this study to examine job satisfaction among PA faculty was Herzberg’s (1966) two-factor theory of motivation. Additionally to enhance Herzberg’s theory regarding intrinsic and extrinsic factors, Smith, Kendall, and Hulin’s (1969) facet-specific job satisfaction theory (i.e., Job Description Index (JDI)) was utilized. A Web-based survey …

Intimate Partner Violence Among Male And Female U.S. Community College Students, Shakiera Benson Jan 2007

Intimate Partner Violence Among Male And Female U.S. Community College Students, Shakiera Benson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Intimate partner violence affects a significant portion of college-aged individuals, but researchers know little about how the intersection of age, race, class, and gender influence intimate partner violence among community college students in the United States. In this quantitative correlational study, I examined the relationship between intimate partner violence and gender, race, age, class, marital status, and past abuse among community college students using the intersectionality theory. I used the Abusive Behavior Inventory and a demographic survey to collect data via a convenience sample of the target population of men (n = 220) and women (n = 330) attending a …

Diabetic Child In The Elementary Classroom, Thomas Knestrict Ed. D. Jan 2007

Diabetic Child In The Elementary Classroom, Thomas Knestrict Ed. D.

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

Efficiently managing the blood glucose levels of the diabetic child in the elementary classroom is essential in maintaining the overall health of the whole child. There are well documented academic, behavioral and health related consequences related to poor care of the diabetic child The teacher needs to become aware of the nature of the disease and the elements of care in order to effectively manage the Blood Glucose Levels (BGL) of the child. Maintaining desired BGL (between 70- 140) is the ‘lynch pin’ of ensuring the long and short-term health of the diabetic child.
