Boys' Academic Achievement At The Secondary Level In Jordan Between 2005 And 2009, Shadin Belal
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This study investigated factors linked to the underachievement of boys' education in Jordan. These school factors include the availability of male teachers, availability and infrastructure of school, student-teacher ratio (STR), and the quality of teachers. Both qualitative methods and archival research were utilized to collect data in urban and rural areas in Jordan. Findings reveal the existence of an academic disparity in achievement at the secondary level in Jordan. Male students have a lower participation in Jordan's Tawjihi exam. An analysis of Tawjihi results also reveals that girls outperformed boys in all Tawjihi stream exams except for sharia'h between 2004 …

Student Conduct Administrator Knowledge Of The Statistical Reporting Obligations Of The Jeanne Clery Disclosure Of Campus Security Policy And Campus Crime Statistics Act, Michael Matthew Debowes
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (the "Clery Act") is a consumer right-to-know law originally passed by Congress in 1900. The law requires colleges and universities receiving federal student aid to publish annually their security-related policies and crime statistics. The law provides for a civil fine up to $35,000 for each act of noncompliance, which can include failure to disclose a single crime statistic.
Student conduct administrators play an important role in classifying crimes, yet the literature is lacking on this population's understanding of the Clery Act. Therefore the purpose of this study …

Theses and Dissertations
This research analyzed the effect that the General State Aid (GSA) Property Tax Extension Limitation Law adjustment and Hold Harmless component had on equity in the Illinois General State Aid funding system. The equity criteria defined in the study was permissible variance, wealth neutrality, and conditional wealth neutrality. This study consisted of four simulations. First, baseline indices were calculated for the Illinois funding system for 2000 to 2011. Second, the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law adjustment (PTELL) was eliminated, the associated cost savings used to increase the GSA foundation level, and new equity indices were calculated. Third, the Hold Harmless …

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this quantitative study was to understand the impact that Greek affiliation has on the education-abroad experience. Specifically, the study examined whether there were differences in the experiences of Greek and non-Greek undergraduate education-abroad participants.
The central question for the study was: Are there differences in participation and experiences in education-abroad activities between students affiliated with social Greek letter organizations and students who are not affiliated with social Greek letter organizations? The researcher examined four different experiential differences: rate, influences to participate, barriers, and educational outcomes.
By examining 705 current University of Nebraska—Lincoln students who had study-abroad experiences, …

Transformative Education: Culture-Based Pedagogies In Urban, Predominately Black American Elementary Schools, Robin Harden-Daniels
Transformative Education: Culture-Based Pedagogies In Urban, Predominately Black American Elementary Schools, Robin Harden-Daniels
Theses and Dissertations
Problems facing Black American students in underfunded urban schools continue to threaten the viability of public education for this and other nontraditional student populations. These problems, along with the growing diversity of American children, prompt a reexamination of extant data on the practices associated with the effective teaching of Black American students. This meta-ethnography illuminates the findings of four case studies and then explores their implications for teaching. By looking through the lens of critical race theory, this study explores how effective teachers use culture-based instruction to better engage Black American students in the process of learning. Findings identify core …
Reading Pedagogy In Today's Classroom, Maria Beeman-Rygalski
Reading Pedagogy In Today's Classroom, Maria Beeman-Rygalski
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative study is to investigate the phenomenon of successful primary classroom teachers' instruction, in the area of reading pedagogy. All children who are capable of reading must be taught how to read; such is the essential responsibility of American schooling. Moats (1999) describes reading as the most basic, yet critical responsibility of schooling. Haycock (1998), Marzano (2003), and Nye, Konstantopulos, and Hedges (2004) determined that the influence of an effective teacher has the biggest impact on student achievement, independent of anything else that happens in school. There is little research linking evidence of teacher perceptions, knowledge …

Making It Work: Factors That Influence The Success Of Programs At Rural Community Colleges, Rebecca Calwell
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Community colleges are expected to contribute to economic development efforts by implementing new programs that respond to the needs of business and industry. This qualitative study explores the factors that influence successful occupational programs at rural community colleges. Participants included administrators, faculty members, and students associated with three rural community colleges in West Virginia, as well as one state-level administrator and a former community college president. This study indicates the importance of five factors that influence the success of occupational programs: demand for …
