Where Am I Going? Where Have I Been?, Teresa R. Coenen Jan 1997

Where Am I Going? Where Have I Been?, Teresa R. Coenen

Graduate Research Papers

The task of writing a reflective essay is to describe my educational philosophy and beliefs, how they were framed and formed, and how I hope to apply them in future applications. In order to understand my goals, one must first look at the path that has lead me to these goals. Before I can truly understand where I am going, I must first review where I have been. I have never – not even for one minute – regretted my decision to become an educator. In the last seven years, I have never wished to skip a single day of …

Swosu Fact Book Fall 1997, Denisa Engelman

Fact Books

I am proud to introduce the sixth annual Southwestern Oklahoma State University Fact Book. It provides a ready source of information to answer frequently asked questions about the University and its operations. Unless otherwise noted, the information in this Fact Book came from computer-generated reports that are printed following the tenth class day of each fall semester. Because of student fluctuations during the semester, numbers will not match other published enrollment numbers that may be based on enrollment at the end of a semester.

Educational Assessment As Invitation For Dialogue, Ronald C. Arnett, Pat Arneson Jan 1997

Educational Assessment As Invitation For Dialogue, Ronald C. Arnett, Pat Arneson

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article offers a communicative foundation for viewing the act of educational assessment as an opportunity for dialogue with a larger public in the U.S. There are three main areas which comprise an invitation for dialogue with the public: the politics of assessment, foundation for dialogue about the communication discipline and the proposal for a dialogic communication with the public as a way to create shared meaning about the process of communication. Invitation to dialogue envisions communication as socially constructed. Both self and other are central to the emergence of truth. The wise communicator is careful, but in the midst …

The Athens Of The West: Education In Nashville, 1780-1860, Timothy Augustus Sweatman Aug 1996

The Athens Of The West: Education In Nashville, 1780-1860, Timothy Augustus Sweatman

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Nashville, Tennessee, is known as the Athens of the South because of its reputation as a center of learning. The city’s commitment to education goes back to the days of its founding as a village on the extreme Western frontier of the United States. In 1785, five years after Nashville was first settled, Davidson Academy, an advanced classical school, was established. At the same time, numerous private schools operated in the Nashville area, providing many of the region’s children with a basic education.

During the first quarter of the nineteenth century Nashville moved closer to becoming a major educational center. …

Case Study Of The Kingsport Regional Education Alliance, D. L. Reed

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the origin and evolution of the Kingsport Regional Education Alliance (KREA 2000). A total of 18 individuals, representing three categories, business, education, and community, were selected by purposeful sampling techniques to participate. Data were collected through qualitative methods. The analysis revealed attitudes, behaviors, and perceptions of those involved in the KREA 2000 activities. The investigator identified four major categories that were critical to the evolution of KREA 2000. The four …

Impact Of Tennessee's Value-Added Assessment System On School Superintendents' Decision-Making, Kay M. Goode May 1996

Impact Of Tennessee's Value-Added Assessment System On School Superintendents' Decision-Making, Kay M. Goode

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem related to this study was to develop a clearer understanding of the impact of Tennessee's Value-Added Assessment System (TVAAS) on school superintendents' decision-making responsibilities in view of school reform efforts at both the national and state levels during the last decade. The purpose of this study was to identify relationships between three independent variables (superintendents' years of experience, superintendents' perceived degree of personnel acceptance, and superintendents' perceived technical assistance availability for data analysis and interpretation of results) and superintendents perceptions of the system on eight aspects (student learning; teacher performance; school system success; educational accountability; educational equality; assessment …
