The Development Of The Public Schools In New Mexico Between 1848 And 1900, Thomas J. Mayfield Jr. Jan 1938

The Development Of The Public Schools In New Mexico Between 1848 And 1900, Thomas J. Mayfield Jr.

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The conditions of New Mexico and its time of annexation to the United States were different from most other territories that had been added. The population was composed almost entirely of Spanish descent and Indians. Their customs and ideas of church and state differed completely from those of the American subjects. The climatic and geographic conditions of the territory caused the living conditions to be entirely different. The problem in this study is to show how these conditions affected the educational development and how many obstacles were overcome in establishing a system of public schools. The legal status of the …

Community Activities And Requirements Of Public School Teachers In New Mexico, Burton Allan Rogers Jun 1937

Community Activities And Requirements Of Public School Teachers In New Mexico, Burton Allan Rogers

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

It is the author's purpose in this study to set forth some of the restrictions which are placed upon the teachers of New Mexico, and to discover who is responsible for these restrictions and requirements. The two phases of this problem may at first glance appear to be separate and unrelated. However, the purpose in the view has been an attempt to discover (1) What are the extra-classroom duties of public school teachers in New Mexico? And (2) what relationship, if, any, exists between the various activities of the teacher within the community and his or her success there as …

Tenure And Turnover Of Public School Teachers In New Mexico, Burton T. Williams Jun 1937

Tenure And Turnover Of Public School Teachers In New Mexico, Burton T. Williams

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

It is generally recognized that, other things being equal, teachers who have been in a system long enough to become acquainted with local conditions are able to give more efficient service to the schools than new teachers. The question of turnover of teachers in service has come up within recent years as one of the outstanding and pressing problems concerning the administration of our school systems. It is generally understood that the mobility of our teachers is far in excess of what it should be for the attainment of the best results in our schools. Teachers that are on the …

Legal Status And Trends In Statutory Status Of Public School Teachers In The United States, Amy Jeannette Daniel

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

From Chapter 1

Importance of the Study

To-day in the United States nearly a million persons are employed as teachers in the public schools. The members of this large and important group of employees ore loosely organized, and, therefore, in comparison to many professional or occupational groups, not in a favorable position to promote their own welfare. As a class of public social workers, employed by the state. or by the local school districts as agents of the state, they have long been dependent upon the will of legislators and the wishes or dictates or local communities to establish and …
