Coaching Mathematics And Other Academic Sports, Linc. Fisch Jan 1983

Coaching Mathematics And Other Academic Sports, Linc. Fisch

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

It was one of those gorgeous autumn afternoons: a deep October blue sky contrasted with the brilliant golds and crimsons of the trees, the dazzle of the sun moderated the crispness in the air, and the spirit of the Homecoming crowd brought the stadium to vibrant life. It was a perfect day for football - and hardly the time or the place to be meditating about teaching. But that's where I first began to wonder ... to wonder why the football coach seemed to have so much more success with his team than I had with my mathematics class. A …

Credentialism As Monopoly, Class War, And Socialization Scheme: Some Historical Reflections On Modern Ways Of Determining Who Can Do A Job, Paul A. Olson Jan 1983

Credentialism As Monopoly, Class War, And Socialization Scheme: Some Historical Reflections On Modern Ways Of Determining Who Can Do A Job, Paul A. Olson

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Social theorists in earlier periods have looked at credentialing from the perspective of its service to the economic or social system as opposed to its “protection of the public interest.” Adam Smith regarded the long education and the performance tests that the guilds required as monopolistic constraints on production; Karl Marx saw the same guild system as controlled by the propertied classes and uselessly exclusionary; and Emile Durkheim, unlike both Smith and Marx, regarded the occupational group with its entrance requirements as central to the stability of modern society. The application of the principles of Smith, Marx, and Durkheim, in …

A Field Experience Involving The Development Of A Handbook For Beginning School Board Members, Lynn R. Strack

Masters Theses

A field study involving the development of a handbook for beginning school board members, by the writer, under the direction of Dr. Matzner of the Eastern Illinois University Department of School Service Personnel, is summarized in this paper. A handbook for beginning school board members was developed to assist them in the difficult areas of school operations as designated by board members now serving school districts in central Illinois.

The field study involved gathering information from boards of education on the problems they encountered as beginning school board members. The problems were categorized into major topics and a handbook was …

The Development Of A Student-Parent Handbook For Lake Crest Elementary School, Oakland, Illinois, Ezra W. Smithson Jan 1983

The Development Of A Student-Parent Handbook For Lake Crest Elementary School, Oakland, Illinois, Ezra W. Smithson

Masters Theses

In 1947, a large number of very small school districts surrounded Oakland, Illinois each with its own school board. In 1948, Oakland and all or parts of these 16 districts were consolidated by the vote of the people into a single school district as permitted by State Law (1948) thus forming Oakland Community School District No. 5.

Three attendance centers, the Oakland Elementary School; the Hindsboro Elementary School; and Oakland High School were operated from 1959 until 1968.

A new Elementary attendance center was completed in 1968, and the old attendance centers in Oakland and Hindsboro were closed.

The new …

Communication, The Missing Ingredient, Rex W. Eddy Jan 1983

Communication, The Missing Ingredient, Rex W. Eddy

Masters Theses

This writer feels that communication is a very significant aspect of the educational process. Upon assuming the principalship at Winchester High School, action was undertaken to aid the development of good lines of communication between the administration, faculty, student body and community. Basically, four distinct steps were pursued in an attempt to develop and improve upon the communication system at Winchester High School.

The first step concerned itself with the development of a comprehensive new "Student Handbook." It was immediately obvious to this writer that the rules and regulations for the daily operation of Winchester High School needed to be …

Congruence And Divergence Of Teacher-School Board Member Attitudes In Selected Kentucky School Districts 1973 And 1982, Glen A. Kleine

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem of this study was to determine if significant differences existed between teachers and school board members in two school districts in Kentucky in their perceptions of 35 selected educational issues and procedures. The population studied included all teachers and board members in the two selected school districts. A study of the county school district in Kentucky was conducted in 1973 and in 1982. Study of the city school district in Kentucky was only conducted in 1982. Chi-square statistics were used to analyze the data. Fifteen null hypotheses were tested in this study.
