Making It Work: Reframing College Student Off-Campus Employment As A High-Impact Practice, Danielle Jennings, Jörg Vianden

New York Journal of Student Affairs

Working while attending college has become a reality of the student experience, especially for low-income, adult, and BIPOC students. Particularly, off-campus employment is commonplace but may not be fully understood by higher education professionals as an educationally effective activity. This paper is grounded in current literature on the necessity and the benefits of off-campus employment, along with the need for high-impact practices. We, the authors, encourage institutions to reframe off-campus employment as an activity that is educationally effective for those students who engage in it.

Instructional designers working in centralized, academic reporting units may be well-positioned to advance the work of institutions to maintain good standing with the industry and regulatory bodies. To illustrate the challenges, opportunities, and strategies employed by an instructional designer working in such a position, an autoethnographic study was conducted to elucidate how shared governance influences, empowers, and disempowers an instructional designer’s ability to lead and collaborate on …

Emotional intelligence gained interest in the early 1990s from researchers in hopes of assessing how understanding and developing emotions can help individuals be “healthy, rich, successful, loved, and happy” (Mayer et al., 2001, p. xi). This qualitative study aimed to explore the impact of an ultra-brief intervention on the trait emotional intelligence development of university student leaders and how they …

Building Leadership Capacity & Succession Planning In The Archdiocese Of Seattle Catholic Schools, Pamela J. Schwartz

Additionally, studies reveal that effective principals have a positive impact on student achievement and school improvement (Leithwood et al., 2004; Waters et al., 2003). Because effective leaders are vital to the success of Catholic schools, it is logical to deduce the importance of investing in robust leadership development and succession programs to ensure the longevity of both Catholic schools and the Church. Rooted in the servant and contemplative leadership theories, this study examined important practices within leadership development and succession planning through …
