The Impact And Sustainability Of A School Improvement Grant On Student Outcomes In An Elementary Setting, Tiesha Denise Reed
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to examine the impact and sustainability of the School Improvement Grant (SIG) Transformation Model and to determine its impact on a low-performing elementary school. The research study used a quantitative research design to investigate the effects of the SIG on student achievement and school annual reporting data across three time periods: pre-intervention (2014-2015), post-intervention (2016-2017), and six years after the grant ended (2022-2023). The research design was appropriate because it allowed the researcher to collect archival data and examine potential differences across time periods. The independent variable was the three time periods, and the …

The Returns On Educational Investment: Military Retention Among Mid-Grade Enlisted Soldiers After Army-Funded Degree Completion, Robert Kenneth Bandy Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
The U.S. Army Tuition Assistance (TA) program represents a substantial investment in the education and professional development of enlisted soldiers, yet limited empirical research has examined retention outcomes among soldiers who complete degrees using TA. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between selected demographic and educational characteristics and time-to-separation among enlisted U.S. Army soldiers who completed a degree using TA between fiscal years 2023 and 2025. Guided by Human Capital Theory, the study used archival administrative data from the Army Continuing Education Division (ACED) and the Integrated Personnel and Pay System-Army (IPPS-A). A stratified …
Perception Matters: A Case Study Exploring How Belief Systems Affect Family-School Partnerships And Family Literacy Initiatives In A Title I School, Kwtay Calvin
Dissertations
Family-school partnerships have been shown to have positive effects on students’ overall performance in school. However, in many instances schools have not used partnerships effectively to support literacy learning, particularly for Black families. Teacher bias, negative perceptions, and lack of cultural responsiveness hinder teachers’ effort to build meaningful relationships with Black families to best support family literacy. This qualitative study aimed to examine family-school partnerships through the experiences of school principals, teachers, and Black families to gain insight into the factors that impact collaborative relationships and family literacy support. This study is framed in critical race theory, the theory of …

Implementing Culturally Responsive Teaching: A Qualitative Content Analysis Of Emerging Themes, Stephanie Yelder-Stovall
Implementing Culturally Responsive Teaching: A Qualitative Content Analysis Of Emerging Themes, Stephanie Yelder-Stovall
Doctor of Education (EdD)
Culturally responsive teaching (CRT) is a research-grounded pedagogical approach for educational equity centering cultural knowledge to make learning meaningful and relevant (Gay, 2002). However, a persistent gap remains between CRT as a concept and classroom implementation. Research suggests translating the principles of CRT frameworks into classroom practice remains challenging (Gay, 2000, 2010; Sleeter, 2012). Guided by the research question and using Schreier’s (2012) qualitative content analysis approach, I analyzed a dataset of 14 varied sources through a deductive coding frame derived from four theoretical frameworks: (a) Gay’s (2000, 2010) CRT, (b) Hammond’s (2015) ready for rigor, (c) Paris and Alim’s …
Metacognitive Awareness And Reading Success: Creating Responsive Instruction Through Student Voice, Melanie A. Boonstra
Metacognitive Awareness And Reading Success: Creating Responsive Instruction Through Student Voice, Melanie A. Boonstra
Doctor of Education (EdD)
This sequential explanatory mixed-methods study investigated the relationship between fifthgrade students' metacognitive awareness and reading comprehension within a learner-centered environment. Grounded in Zimmerman’s (2002) self-regulated learning framework, the research utilized the Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Strategies Inventory-Revised (MARSI-R) and NWEA MAP reading assessments (n = 42). Quantitative results indicated a moderate, statistically significant positive relationship (r = .501, p = .001), with metacognitive awareness explaining approximately 25% of the variance in reading achievement. The subsequent qualitative phase involved semi-structured interviews with six purposively selected students representing convergent and divergent profiles. Thematic analysis revealed three primary dimensions of metacognitive regulation: orientation …
A Comparison Of Standards-Based Grading And Traditional Grading Systems As Related To State Test Scores, Jordan T. Ruiz
A Comparison Of Standards-Based Grading And Traditional Grading Systems As Related To State Test Scores, Jordan T. Ruiz
Doctor of Education (EdD)
State test scores have become a gauge that many stakeholders use when judging schools, teachers, and students in the United States of America. Most of these tests are based on the standards set by the state to judge the competency of the students. The purpose of this study was to compare the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) state test score data of seventh-grade students from two middle schools in the Pacific Northwest. It also seeks to establish if there were statistically significant differences between students who learn under a Standards-Based Grading (SBG) system versus a Traditional Grading System (TGS) when …

Developing An Educational Session And Epic-Based Tools To Help Nurses Provide Culturally Sensitive Care To Their Muslim Patients, Laila Albutmeh
Nursing | Senior Theses
Background: Islam is currently the fastest growing religion in the world and the chances of nurses having a Muslim patient is exceptionally high yet many nurses lack the knowledge and resources on how to accurately provide culturally sensitive care to Muslim patients. Hospitals lack educational sessions/training as well as Epic tools to help nurses provide culturally sensitive care to Muslim patients which leads to a knowledge deficit in cultural sensitivity of Islamic beliefs, values, and practices. Purpose: This thesis paper proposes a research design for a nurse education/training program on Islamic beliefs, values, and practices along with an implementation of …

The Obverse-Turing Test: Rethinking Authorship, Trust, And Time In An Accelerated Age, Michael J. Miller, Chatgpt (Ai~Nesbo+)
Psychology
In this paper, we propose a new test for scientific accountability in the era of artificial intelligence: the Obverse Turing Test for Authorship. While the traditional Turing test focuses on a machine's ability to mimic human intelligence, our test addresses the question: when should a scientific contribution involving artificial intelligence be attributed joint authorship? We argue that more and more authors are using AI in the idea generation and elaboration stages of their work, but rarely acknowledge this use explicitly. To examine this gap, we analyze examples of human–AI interactions across fields and propose a new approach to authorship based …
