The Qualitative Report

Experiences that influence and shape an individual’s pedagogical commitments serve as a unique lens to conceptualize professional transformation. This narrative provides an autobiographical account of the author’s journey from student to teacher. The article, which is divided into two distinct, but tightly connected narratives, draws on this tradition to examine and develop a more nuanced understanding of those life experiences influencing the author’s complex journey as an educator. Each narrative begins with a short autobiographical reflection highlighting significant life moments and histories. An unprecedented 65.6 million persons are forcibly displaced (e.g., refugees, asylum-seekers, IDPs). Half are youth. Hope is often the feeling that sustains youth through intolerable conditions. Basic education in protracted areas is seen as a protective factor that nurtures hope and psychosocial wellbeing in the lives of children and youth. This research sought to extend this concept to the higher education in protracted refugee context, where refugees (ages 18-35) were able to co-create spaces of hope that recognized their own agency and their ability to question the status quo while developing critical thinking skills. This study investigated a potential path to foster trust in two levels of college and university leadership (direct leaders and senior leadership). Two direct leader empowering leadership behaviors (participative decision-making and informing) where explored as antecedents of trust. The population studied was full-time faculty members at mid-sized not-for-profit colleges and universities in the Great Lakes region. Direct leader’s participative decision-making related positively with trust in direct leader. Evidence of trust transfer through a hierarchical layer of leadership was also found. Direct leader’s participative decision-making related positively to trust in senior leadership, but only when mediated by trust in direct leader. …

This paper describes the use of a board game, Civil War, as a learning experience in the context of a course on critical theory. Civil War was created by the Educational Games Company of Lebanon and is set during the 1975-1990 Lebanese civil war. The game functions both as a pedagogical instrument, in that players learn about the situation in Lebanon while playing the game, but also as a form of critique, in that its makers are clearly using it as a means of articulating their lived experiences and challenging the dominant narratives around the conflict. Fossils belonging to the genus Homo, dating as far back as two million years ago, exhibit uniquely efficient features suggesting that early humans had evolved to become exceptional endurance runners. Although they did not have the cushion or stability-control features provided in our modern day running shoes, our early human ancestors experienced far less of the running-related injuries we experience today. The injury rate has been estimated as high as 90% annually for Americans training for a marathon and as high as 79% annually for all American endurance runners. Through employing critical narratives, this qualitative study examined the experiences of Black women who utilized their scholarship and activism to address campus climates at a predominantly Chicanx Latinx institution in Southern California. Six Black women – two faculty, two staff, and two students – participated in the study. All participants were active with Ethnic Studies (Pan-African Studies), the campus Cross Cultural Centers, and Black Student Union student organization in some capacity. American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) history represents a number of traumatic events inflicted upon each tribal generation that has yet to recover. These events have led to major consequences on the health of this population. AI/AN people experience the worst health disparities in the nation (Espey et al., 2014; Warne & Lajimodiere, 2015). Previous studies have shown that loss of land, cultural devastation, and inadequate health care access are associated with the high rates of health disparities endured by AI/AN people throughout North America (Walters, et al., 2011). The implementation of Title IX has increased women’s participation rates in intercollegiate athletics tenfold, yet women’s representation in athletic leadership remains marginal compared to men. As such, the purpose of this study was to understand the social construction of gender as it relates to intercollegiate athletic leadership at Eastern Michigan University. The study explored the history of sporting activities as a mechanism to shape and perpetuate masculine and feminine culture. Being labelled as qualifying for special assistance simply by being a Black male is common, as with five Black males at my professional educational institution. This study elicits the voices of these Black males in such areas as their personal perception of academic achievement, school improvement needs, and staff misunderstandings of Black males. Because this research elicits voices of Black males missing from the current research literature (Howard, 2014), the participant researcher decided to use these ethnographic accounts to glimpse into the minds and schooling experiences of these students. Native American youth face a number of challenges that affect their academic success and mental health (Center for Native American Youth, 2016). One way in which Native American youth currently face prejudice within the school system is through curriculum (Yosso, 2002). More specifically, Native American youth are often presented with textbooks that include stereotyped and distorted information about their peoples’ history (Loewen, 1995; Sanchez, 2007). The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of a self-assessment rubric on a students’ ability to self-monitor and self-regulate engaged reading behaviors. The research attempts to answer the following question: What impact does self-assessment have on the engagement of second-grade students during Independent Reading? Using an action research design, data was collected using a pretest and posttest, weekly engagement assessments, field notes and pre/post interviews. การวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) ศึกษากรอบแนวคิดขีดความสามารถกำลังพลของกองทัพบก สมรรถนะครูทหาร และการพัฒนาสมรรถนะ 2) วิเคราะห์สภาพปัจจุบันและสภาพที่พึงประสงค์ของการพัฒนาสมรรถนะครูทหารของโรงเรียนเหล่าตามแนวคิดการเสริมสร้างขีดความสามารถกำลังพลของกองทัพบก 3) เพื่อวิเคราะห์จุดแข็ง จุดอ่อน โอกาส และภาวะคุกคามของการพัฒนาสมรรถนะครูทหารของโรงเรียนเหล่าตามแนวคิดการเสริมสร้างขีดความสามารถกำลังพลของกองทัพบก 4) เพื่อพัฒนากลยุทธ์การพัฒนาสมรรถนะครูทหารของโรงเรียนเหล่าตามแนวคิดการเสริมสร้างขีดความสามารถกำลังพลของกองทัพบก ผู้ให้ข้อมูลแบ่งออกเป็น 3 กลุ่ม คือ ผู้บริหารโรงเรียนเหล่า ครู-อาจารย์โรงเรียนเหล่า และผู้ใช้ผลผลิตของโรงเรียนเหล่าจากกองทัพภาคที่ 1-4 รวมกลุ่มผู้ให้ข้อมูลทั้งสิ้นจำนวน 484 คน โดยการสุ่มแบบแบ่งชั้นและการสุ่มอย่างง่าย เครื่องมือการวิจัย ประกอบด้วย แบบสังเคราะห์ข้อมูล แบบประเมินกรอบแนวคิด และแบบสอบถาม สถิติที่ใช้ในการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูล คือ ร้อยละ ค่าเฉลี่ย ความถี่ ส่วนเบี่ยงเบนมาตรฐาน และการวิเคราะห์เนื้อหาผลการวิจัยพบว่า (1) กรอบแนวคิดประกอบด้วย 3 องค์ประกอบหลัก ดังนี้ 1. ขีดความสามารถกำลังพลของกองทัพบก ประกอบด้วย ขีดความสามารถในการปฏิบัติภารกิจในสงคราม (War) และขีดความสามารถในการปฏิบัติภารกิจนอกเหนือจากสงคราม (MOOTW) 2. สมรรถนะครูทหาร ประกอบด้วย สมรรถนะด้านการจัดการเรียนการสอน สมรรถนะด้านความเป็นครูทหาร สมรรถนะด้านคุณลักษณะทางทหาร สมรรถนะด้านความรู้เทคนิคเฉพาะเหล่า 3. การพัฒนาสมรรถนะ ประกอบด้วย การฝึกอบรมขณะทำงาน ได้แก่ การมอบหมายงาน การสอนงาน การฝึกงาน และการฝึกอบรมนอกงาน ได้แก่ การอบรมสัมมนา และการอบรมผ่านสื่อออนไลน์ (2) สภาพปัจจุบันในภาพรวมอยู่ในระดับปานกลาง ด้านที่มีค่าเฉลี่ยมากที่สุด คือ การพัฒนาสมรรถนะด้านความรู้เทคนิคเฉพาะเหล่า และด้านที่มีค่าเฉลี่ยต่ำที่สุด คือ การพัฒนาสมรรถนะด้านความเป็นครูทหาร สภาพที่พึงประสงค์ในภาพรวมอยู่ในระดับมาก ด้านมีค่าเฉลี่ยมากที่สุด คือ การพัฒนาสมรรถนะด้านความรู้เทคนิคเฉพาะเหล่า และด้านที่มีค่าเฉลี่ยต่ำที่สุด คือ การพัฒนาสมรรถนะด้านความเป็นครูทหาร (3) จุดแข็ง คือ การพัฒนาสมรรถนะด้านความรู้เทคนิคเฉพาะเหล่า จุดอ่อน คือ การพัฒนาสมรรถนะด้านการจัดการเรียนการสอน โอกาส คือ ด้านสภาพสังคม ด้านเศรษฐกิจ และด้านการเมืองและนโยบายของรัฐ ภาวะคุกคาม คือ ด้านเทคโนโลยี (4) …
