Ending Genocide And Creating Human Right: A Call To Leaders In Higher Education--Exploring The Visionary Leadership Of Raphael Lemkin And Eleanor Roosevelt, Sam Mcfarland

International Journal of Leadership and Change

I first argue briefly that a basic course on human rights, now rarely taught in American universities, should be offered everywhere. I then describe the visionary leadership of Raphael Lemkin, who almost singlehandedly created the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, and the inspirational leadership of Eleanor Roosevelt, without whom the Universal Declaration of Human Rights may never have been written. Their efforts and achievements are reviewed, and several of their common qualities that made them successful are noted.

The changing nature of armed conflict in the 21^st century, marked by indiscriminate targeting of civilians, poses severe challenges for the continuation of teaching and learning in war-affected countries. Conflict may affect schooling directly through attacks on students, teachers, and schools, as well as indirectly by affecting individuals' livelihoods, the state's capacity to deliver services, and refugee flows. Further, schools may reflect conflict and violence through oppressive or divisive linguistic policies or curricula, the use of corporal punishment, and sexual violence against students. The world is changing quickly and in complex ways, and this study addresses some of the key implications of these changes for higher education leaders today. Many leaders are facing the difficult task of determining which developments in the larger society are most important and what they may mean for their institutions and for higher education as a whole. This study presents a broad analysis of trends shaping society, highlights patterns within these trends that are important, and offers a framework based on these patterns that leaders might use to help them clarify and evaluate the implications of these changes. …

Through millions of pairs of lenses, we each see ourselves, others, and relationships from a variety of views. Each brings his or her inner world, unmet needs, emotional baggage, culture, and belief system into the human connection. So perhaps I shouldn't have been stunned a few weeks ago while reading the resiliency research associated with troubled youth inside our schools, when I encountered these words from Dr. Nicholas Long: "The number one reason for the increase in student violence in schools is staff counteraggression." Yet I was stunned.

Using WWI, the Great Depression, and WWII as a backdrop, students will determine how catastrophic events can have not only a negative effect, but also a positive effect. Students will also investigate the role that individuals play in world history and how individuals can sometimes have an immense impact both negatively and positively. To transfer their new knowledge, students will research the positive effects, negative effects, and individuals associated with various catastrophic events of the last 40-50 years.

The passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendment Act (ADAAA) of 2008 and the Post-9/11 Veterans Assistance Act of 2008 have afforded veterans the opportunity to pursue post-secondary education. Since October 2001, over 2 million American men and women in uniform have deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). While thousands of returning combat veterans take advantage of recent legislation that helps pay for their education, they face new challenges in the classroom. This dissertation explores the paradox between the normalizing and equalizing purpose of public education, stated in the rhetoric of policy and politics, and the social gaps it actually produces and perpetuates. The purpose of the study is to deterritorialize the ideal rational child of formal education and policy texts by juxtaposing it with the affective child found at the margin, outside of the rational regime of perception that permeates policy, and political discourse. A Phenomenological Study On The Role Of Juche, Militarism, And Human Rights In The Educational Life Experiences Of North Korean Defectors, Andrea Lee

This transcendental phenomenological study describes the essence of the premigration, transmigration, and postmigration educational life experiences of 15 North Korean defectors in South Korea in light of their exposure to Juche, militarism, and human rights violations. The literature review includes a theoretical framework rooted in the transformative learning theory and pertinent themes related to the educational experiences of North Korean defectors. Data was collected through a demographic survey; a timeline of primary life events; standardized, open-ended interviews; and journal entries. Along with advancing mobile technologies and proliferating mobile devices and applications, mobile learning research has gained great momentum in recent years. While there have been review articles summarizing past research, studies identifying mobile learning research priorities based on experts’ latest insights have been lacking. This study employed the Delphi method to obtain a consensus from experts about areas that are most in need of research in mobile learning.
