The Effect Of Teachers’ Qualification On Children’S Learning Outcome In Early Childhood Education In Northern Uganda, Brenda Apeta
The Effect Of Teachers’ Qualification On Children’S Learning Outcome In Early Childhood Education In Northern Uganda, Brenda Apeta
Master of Education
This study examined the effect of teachers’ qualification on the children’s learning outcome in nursery schools in Northern Uganda. Twenty lessons were observed from five teachers in two rural nursery schools. The findings indicated that three of the teachers were of low qualifications while the remaining two had no qualifications in ECD. The teachers’ low qualification or the lack of it, affected children’s learning outcome in such a way that the untrained teachers to a greater extent used classroom practices that encouraged rote learning as compared to the qualified teachers. The teachers’ perception on how their qualification shaped their classroom …
Student Leadership Preparation In Secondary Schools: A Case Study In Siaya County, Kenya, Leonard Onyango Wambiya
Student Leadership Preparation In Secondary Schools: A Case Study In Siaya County, Kenya, Leonard Onyango Wambiya
Master of Education
Preparation of student leaders for their roles has been found to be important for effective linkage of the student population with staff and administration as a way of incorporating ‘student voice’ in secondary school administration. This study was prompted by the persistent violent student unrests in secondary schools in Kenya, which have been blamed on lack of student involvement in school governance. It is argued that leadership can be learnt and that specific strategies can be used by individuals and groups to enhance the leadership skills of student leaders for them to participate effectively in leadership in schools. Using qualitative …

An Exploration Of The Implementation Of Continuous Assessment In Mathemetics Education At Primary Teachers’ Colleges In Uganda, Kirabo Esther
Master of Education
Improvement in the teaching and learning process for the benefit of both teachers and students is always at the centre of continuous assessment. It therefore follows from this view that continuous assessment in particular has been hailed to de-emphasize the hitherto terminal assessment because of various advantages it has over terminal assessment (Brown, 2004; Webb & Jones, 2009). This study was designed to explore the progress of the implementation of continuous assessment in mathematics education at Primary Teachers’ Colleges in Uganda, a component explicitly introduced in the curriculum and assessment since 2012. The study was conducted in a public Primary …

Investigating How Assessment Contributes To Learning During English Language Lessons In A Secondary School In Kenya, Diana Ongayo Amunga
Master of Education
In Kenya, there are high stakes national examinations. As a result, these examinations greatly impact content, methods and even strategies used in school. This has resulted into a situation where, instead of assessment supporting learning , the assessment activities end up interfering with learning, as stakeholders strive to better learner achievement, in the process overlooking lifelong learning which is the goal of the curriculum. The pedagogical shift from the teaching to the learning culture has to some extend impacted teachers' classroom activities, with learners' voice being allowed in learning activities. However, educators continue to take full charge of assessment activities …

To Explore How Physics Teachers Use Instructional Materials In Teaching And Learning Of Physics In Secondary Schools: A Case Of One Secondary School In Taita Sub County, Kenya., Jackson Mwikamba Mwawongo
Master of Education
It is the desire any educator to help students meet their fullest potential by providing an environment that supports students to exercise independence of thought and encourage sharing of ideas. When the teacher acts as a guide, providing access to information rather than acting as the primary source of information, the students’ search for knowledge is met as they learn to construct knowledge for themselves and practice skills through hands on activities that reinforce the lesson being studied. Instructional materials help students in enhancing retention, stimulating and sustaining interest in learning by providing firsthand experience with realities of the physical …

'Grounding' Walter Rodney In Critical Pedagogy: Toward Praxis In African History, Seneca Vaught
'Grounding' Walter Rodney In Critical Pedagogy: Toward Praxis In African History, Seneca Vaught
South
This essay attempts to address the dilemma of theory and praxis, what Freire referred to as “mere verbalism,” by examining one historical instance of critical pedagogy in history education. This essay argues that Walter Rodney’s curriculum, as detailed in his syllabi on “Historians and Revolutions” and "Groundings," helps educators better understand how to more effectively bridge the gap between a critical pedagogical theory and praxis in African history. Using Rodney as an example of a critical pedagogy theorist and practitioner, this essay explores how concerned historians (and those who use history as a basis for teaching) can traverse traditional disciplinary …

Things Go Wrong. Life Goes On. How Do We Stay Strong? The Path Of Resilience: Processing Trauma Through Learning, Social Emotional Support, And Empowerment, Sarah Gonzales , '15
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
In this thesis I research how educators and communities can respect the feelings and realities of those experiencing trauma. I look at the ways we can frame learning experiences so that they empower people; allowing them to process their trauma safely and develop resilience. I describe three experiences I have participated in over my time attending Swarthmore College. These separate excerpts are interconnected in the ways that participants entered into an opportunity to constructively process their trauma, with the social emotional support of community members, and were therefore able to become agents of self-advocacy and change.

Educational Infrastructure And Resources For Sustainable Access To Schooling And Outcomes: The Case Of Early Literacy Development In Southern Tanzania, Marriote Ngwaru, Mary Oluga
Institute for Educational Development, East Africa
Following on the 1990 and 2000 World Conferences on Education for All, African governments increased their focus on access to schooling (but not necessarily on outcomes) by providing more facilities for increased enrollments. The learning outcomes that had been neglected led to a call to focus on more sustainable access – re-examining the quality of some of those facilities against the anticipated quality of educational outcomes. Studies in Southern and Eastern Africa, including the one under discussion here, indicate that the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) will not rely only on school-based factors but also on the careful …

Master's Theses
The internationalization of higher education has contributed to the increase of American students studying abroad. Students studying abroad do have an impact the local host communities’ social, economic and cultural traditions. Although, students may or may not be aware of the consequences, both negative and positive, of their impact. This research sought to examine the perceived impact by both alumni and local faculty of a small program in Tanzania. Alumni were reflective on their experience in regards to how they wavered between feeling like a tourist and feeling more connected to the community. Alumni and local faculty both felt that …

Managing Quality In Secondary Education Sector In Tanzania, Consolata Louis Chua
Managing Quality In Secondary Education Sector In Tanzania, Consolata Louis Chua
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Quality management in education is an area that has received various conceptualizations. Although there is no agreed definition of quality, its management depends on set standards as well as quality assurance and control mechanisms in place. Based on the review of various literatures, this paper uses a model developed from systems theory and CIPP model to shed light to both policy makers and implementers on what should be taken on board to achieve the level of quality desired. The paper also adds to the debate on what should be the priority when it comes to the issue of management of …

Compulsory Science Policy, Student Performance, And Teachers’ Role: Uganda’S Experience, Joyce Ayikoru Asiimwe
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Using Lipsky’s concept of the street-level bureaucrat, this paper highlights how teachers may be contributing to students’ high failure rates within the framework of the recent educational reforms, with particular focus on the Compulsory Science Policy (CSP). Analysis of students’ performance in science and mathematics before and after the policy indicates that secondary schools have continued to register high student failure rates in mathematics and the core sciences. This dismal performance puts science teachers on the spotlight and threatens to undermine their professional competence. Over the years science teachers have often responded to the dilemma of high failure rates by …
