The Project Idea, Margaret Cleary Jul 1925

The Project Idea, Margaret Cleary

Bachelors’ Theses

We are constantly changing our ideas in education. If we do not change them entirely, we vary them and give them a new name. Before we let the pendulum swing to the new we should examine the new rather closely from many angles. Perhaps the new is only the old in a new dress. It may look alluring but offer no more than we now have. It may not be based on sound psychology or sound pedagogy. The desire at present seems to be for more freedom in our schools and less of the ready-made education—more activity on the part …

School : A Selective Agent In Scoiety, Guido Eric Gauckler Jul 1925

School : A Selective Agent In Scoiety, Guido Eric Gauckler

Bachelors’ Theses

Our schools are not essentially for creating intelligence. They are more in the manner of a selective agency. The school selects those that are capable. Thus the educational system does not create capacity, it merely or largely selects men of capacity, and chooses those for a higher educational preferment who are adapted to its character. In this respect the school is a selective agent, acting in the manner of a huge sifting machine.

Chinese Secondary Education, Pao H. Mao Jun 1925

Chinese Secondary Education, Pao H. Mao

Graduate Thesis Collection

It is not easy to define the limits of secondary education. Each person has periods in which he can receive education. The middle period of this time can be called the period for secondary education. Looking at it from the stand-point of society, the government has established a school system for the education of its people which can be called secondary education. With the individual the maximum period of receiving education is from six to twenty-four years of age. The period from twelve to eighteen is the suitable period to term the central part or the period of secondary education. …

Habit And Will In The Life Of The Child, Minerva Grace Kemink Jun 1925

Habit And Will In The Life Of The Child, Minerva Grace Kemink

Bachelors’ Theses

The forming of habit and the molding of character are the chief tasks of the character builder. In childhood the trainer makes character to a large degree; during adolescence the youth makes himself. In childhood habits are formed by the unreasoned processes of reiteration; during youth they are made by the voluntary acceptance of an inner-urge, and the conscious nurture of that urge. For the child habit-making must be as unconscious as breathing; for the youth it should be his deliberate and high-born duty. A wise person will never talk habits to children; but before they know it she will …

Some Phases Of Silent Reading, Katherine Moran Jun 1925

Some Phases Of Silent Reading, Katherine Moran

Bachelors’ Theses

Everywhere and at all times we are confronted with the necessity for reading and for making use of what we read. We do occasionally find ourselves doing some oral reading but that need arises very seldom. The business man reads his newspaper on his way to work. If he is a slow reader he must be satisfied with glancing over the headlines in the brief time allotted to him but if he can read rapidly he can do much more. When he is reading his morning mail he can save time if he is sure that he is not missing …

Oral English In The Elementary School, Pauline Ehbets Jun 1925

Oral English In The Elementary School, Pauline Ehbets

Bachelors’ Theses

Since oral English is natural and necessary to the child, it was long thought that instruction in the mother tongue was unnecessary. The establishment of the High Schools in 1876 made definite demands in literary expression upon the elementary schools. Today there is a growing conviction that it is a basic part of every branch of the curriculum, and that it should be a separate study only for definite technical demands...
