I'M Tired Of Punnett Squares, But Genetics Is Still My Jam, Sarah O'Leary-Driscoll

Professional Learning Day

As STEM educators, it can be hard to keep up with what’s happening in our fields outside of the classroom because we have to prioritize the content and skills we share with the students in front of us. But we teach what we do, hopefully, because we love it, and part of our professional development should be to keep that love alive. In this session, we will share ideas for how to stay current, excited and engaged in your own field and in STEM as a whole, when your classroom content only covers the basics that repeat every year. Bring …

Navigating The Transition: Strategies For Supporting The Success Of At-Risk Youth From Middle School To High School And Beyond, Jessica L. Hlavinka Mar 2023

Navigating The Transition: Strategies For Supporting The Success Of At-Risk Youth From Middle School To High School And Beyond, Jessica L. Hlavinka

University Honors Theses

It has been demonstrated that small class sizes are beneficial for at-risk students transferring to high school. With fewer students, teachers are better able to give personalized attention and assistance, which can encourage students' engagement and motivation to study. Small class numbers can also foster a feeling of community and belonging, which is essential for at-risk students who may feel alienated at school. Also shown to be successful in assisting at-risk adolescents with the transition to high school are mentoring programs. High school students can get assistance and support from mentors as they negotiate the obstacles of the academic environment. …

Lived Experiences Of Co-Teachers Including Students With Emotional Behavioral Disabilities: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study, Jessica Lynn Masters Mar 2023

Lived Experiences Of Co-Teachers Including Students With Emotional Behavioral Disabilities: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study, Jessica Lynn Masters

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of elementary educators in a large suburban district who have engaged in the co-teaching model to support the reintegration of students with or at risk for emotional and behavioral disabilities from self-contained classrooms to the general education classroom. The theories that guided this research were the theory of planned behavior, developed and refined by Ajzen, and the attribution theory, developed by Weiner. Together, these theories support the connection between teacher factors, teacher perspectives, and predictable engagement in the behavior, such as supporting and facilitating inclusion for students …

Social Transmission Of Predator Information Through Referential Alarm Calls Within And Across Species, Carly Trebac Mar 2023

Social Transmission Of Predator Information Through Referential Alarm Calls Within And Across Species, Carly Trebac

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Animals can encode information about a predator’s size, identity, or threat through alarm calls. This can provide referential information that can be used by individuals within and across species receiving the information. Referential alarm calls can encode information through changes in structure or rate of the call, and these variances in their call can elicit different responses, such as fleeing or mobbing, in conspecifics and heterospecifics. We aimed to investigate whether white-breasted nuthatch alarm calls can encode referential information and elicit different responses from conspecifics. Previous studies showed that a related species of nuthatch varies their call rate in the …

A Quantitative Analysis Of The Views And Perceptions Of Building Leaders On Discipline And Special Education For Urban Students, Dementred T. Young

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This dissertation involved summarizing and critically evaluating principals’ views on students who have been traumatized and the treatment these students receive as a result of these perceptions. The main focus was to ascertain whether administrators’ upbringing has a mediating effect on the treatment of students being educated in an urban community. The central question focused on the views and perceptions of building leaders raised in urban, suburban, or rural areas and the impact of their perception of urban students who have experienced trauma. Sub-questions were designed to uncover the relationship between the building administrator’s life experiences and perceptions of disciplinary …

School Connectedness In American Style Comprehensive And European Style Tracking Secondary Schools, Diana Csaki Mar 2023

School Connectedness In American Style Comprehensive And European Style Tracking Secondary Schools, Diana Csaki

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Schools are often considered a community nested within a community. A caring school environment contributes to community and belongingness among students. School connectedness, the belief held by students that adults and peers in the school care about their learning and about them as individuals, is viewed as a construct comprising affective, behavioral and cognitive dimensions. School connectedness among students in the United States has been shown as a predictor of adolescent health and academic outcomes with positive feelings of school connectedness linked to positive outcomes. School connectedness research often centers on children and early adolescents and less over the high …

Mediators And Islamophobia: A Qualitative Case Study Of Cacrep Counseling Students' Perceptions Of Cultural Competency With Future Muslim Clients, Regina Mustafa Mar 2023

Mediators And Islamophobia: A Qualitative Case Study Of Cacrep Counseling Students' Perceptions Of Cultural Competency With Future Muslim Clients, Regina Mustafa

Education Doctorate Dissertations

Research suggests that having mental health needs and identifying as Muslim act as double stressors since some Muslims mistrust mental health providers out of fear of discrimination. Since its inception in 1981, the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) has strived to ensure higher education institutions prepare future professional counselors with the awareness, knowledge, and skills to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse clientele. In addition, CACREP’s adoption of the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (MSJCCs) indicates an educational commitment to addressing the oppression and inequities prevalent in counseling practice. In the United …

Evaluating The Outcomes Of Human-Centered Design In A Virtual Program Development Higher Education Course, Amy Leman, Rebecca Mott Mar 2023

Evaluating The Outcomes Of Human-Centered Design In A Virtual Program Development Higher Education Course, Amy Leman, Rebecca Mott

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Societal changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic have shown the importance of both intrapersonal and interpersonal skills in virtual environments. Two midwestern university instructors joint-taught their spring 2021 agricultural education and training program development courses, bringing students together in virtual teams during the pandemic. Course content included human-centered design (HCD) practices (a problem-solving approach focused on the end-user) applied to traditional models of education and program planning. Previous research from other fields has shown that HCD helps students become more empathetic, collaborate in more meaningful ways, and appreciate the need to adapt their points of view. Students in this …

Project-Based Internationalization: Providing Accessible And Equitable High-Impact Education, Kayli Hillebrand Mar 2023

Project-Based Internationalization: Providing Accessible And Equitable High-Impact Education, Kayli Hillebrand

Doctor of Leadership

Inequitable access to global education has long excluded populations of students that are unable to participate in models that require travel away from their home institution. This is especially felt at institutions with a Hispanic Serving Institute (HSI) designation. Factors that contribute towards this end are varying familial and economic systems, financial models, lack of accessible educational accommodations when not at the home institution, mobility restrictions at the host institution, student ability to travel or obtain proper documentation to travel at the state, federal, or international government levels. Considering inequitable access to global education for university students, embedding Project-Based Internationalization …
