Every state in the United States has statutory provisions requiring alcohol education in the public schools . The earliest of these laws dates back to 1858.Taking these facts into account one might assume that by this time, alcohol education programs would be well established and clearly defined, but most authorities in the field would say that this assumption is incorrect. It was the purpose of this study to find facts relating to the history of guidance in Virginia public high schools and to organize the facts into a comprehensive history of guidance in Virginia public high schools. The intent of the writer was to trace developmental trends in the concepts and practices of guidance in the State of Virginia. Survey results were used only to indicate these trends, and no attempt was made to discuss or evaluate guidance services in individual schools.
