High School Biology Training And Introductory College Biology Success, Stanley Whelchel, David Pettus Jan 1970

High School Biology Training And Introductory College Biology Success, Stanley Whelchel, David Pettus

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

High School biology teachers are occasionally concerned with curriculum problems such as: 1. Should BSCS biology be introduced in the curriculum, and if it is, will the students do well in the introductory biology courses in college? 2. Should two biology courses be offered at the high school level, and will the second course really prepare a student better for college biology?

Elementary Science Projects And The Low Group Of Ninth Graders, Richard D. Mcvey Jan 1970

Elementary Science Projects And The Low Group Of Ninth Graders, Richard D. Mcvey

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

For many years it has been a common practice in junior high schools to group children according to their ability. In the science class, as well as in the other areas, this has had its advantages and disadvantages. To motivate the student in the low group is a different type of problem than to motivate the students of the average- or high-ability group.

THE ISSUE

They Want to Understand
The concern of two generations over events that angered and bewildered observers during a tense spring is captured in the cover photo. They are listening to U.S. Senator Margaret Chase Smith answer questions on the Asian war. Mrs. Smith and Senator Edmund S. Muskie came to Colby, summoned by students from 17 Maine institutions, to state positions on the war and domestic strife that sparked college strikes across the country. A report on the strike appears on pages 1-4.

The Multi-Media Approach To Biology, Lena M. Keithahn Jan 1970

The Multi-Media Approach To Biology, Lena M. Keithahn

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

"If at first you don't succeed, you are just about average." This flippant statement of a common experience has led to the multi-media approach in an attempt to make the learning of biology for the average sixteen year old who scores between 35 to 89 on the comprehensive test of the ITED more meaningful and successful.

Science As A Liberal Study, James E. Trosko

Perspectives (1969-1979)

Panel 4 presented at the Association for General and Liberal Studies' Annual Meeting at Colgate University, October 30th through November 1st, 1969.

Many educators recognize that, although elements ( facts, etc.) are needed in order to express or create, these things alone are not enough . Since connections of the mind are probably made from some sources of discipline, the phrase, in and of itself, expresses some truth. However, this facile phrase is too often used to mean the instructor who knows the substance of his discipline extremely well, can use that substance, and that alone, to educate his students. …

The Role Of The Undergraduate College In Social Change, Kenneth E. Boulding, John Weiss Jan 1970

The Role Of The Undergraduate College In Social Change, Kenneth E. Boulding, John Weiss

Perspectives (1969-1979)

Panel 1 presented at the Association for General and Liberal Studies' Annual Meeting at Colgate University, October 30th through November 1st, 1969.

All social change, without exception, involves a process in human learning. Social change, indeed, is an evolutionary process in the field of the "noosphere," especially if we include in this those human artifacts which are the result of imprinting human knowledge on the material and social world.

We ought to be clear at the start that the academic disciplines and the undergraduate college have not had any great impact on social change. Historically, social change in our culture …

Environmental Components Of Liberal Education, George G. Stern, Daniel Lago, Samuel D. Johnson Jan 1970

Environmental Components Of Liberal Education, George G. Stern, Daniel Lago, Samuel D. Johnson

Perspectives (1969-1979)

Panel 2 presented at the Association for General and Liberal Studies' Annual Meeting at Colgate University, October 30th through November 1st, 1969.

The elements of such a curriculum for man can be derived from the evidence of early childhood. Manual dexterity, social interaction, esthetic response, and linguistic capacity constitute four sources of spontaneous gratification in early life. If the student were taken as the integrating center of a curriculum composed of successively more complex forms of these four elements, permitting his own inductive capacities to lead him on from one level to the next, a form of education would emerge …

Science & Technology In Education: What Kind Of A Marriage Is This?, Franklin G. Fisk Jan 1970

Science & Technology In Education: What Kind Of A Marriage Is This?, Franklin G. Fisk

Perspectives (1969-1979)

Science as a human activity can help give us answers to adequate technologies in the classroom, but only if the nature of the scientific enterprise is properly recognized for what it is: A human approach to the world of sense experience with certain definite but necessary biases involving the creative use of hypothesis and theory in conjunction with valid generalizations and accurate data. All this is science, man is a part of it, and I firmly believe that science is one of man's most successful attempts to understand the world in which he lives.

The Community College Environment; A Comparative Study Of Perceptions And Expectations Of Liberal Arts Students In Two Community Colleges, Vann Leonzia Anane

All Master's Theses

The purpose of this study is to determine whether there are any significant differences in the perceptions of two groups of liberal arts students or at two colleges concerning the administration of their college, curriculum, instruction, course offerings, student role in college affairs, and other questions of importance to the college student. Also, an attempt will be made to determine if there is any relationship between a group of students' perceptions of the policies and offerings of their host environment and their expectations of the environment.

Conditioning Expressive Language In A Nonverbal Child, Frederick R. Moll Jan 1970

Conditioning Expressive Language In A Nonverbal Child, Frederick R. Moll

All Master's Theses

The problem of treating the child with delayed speech acquisition has generated a considerable amount of research and these studies have pointed out the need for further work in this area. The purpose of this study is to test the procedures of one particularly effective study, that of Dr. Burl B. Gray at the Monterey Institute for Speech and Hearing in Monterey, California. By removing it from the clinical setting of the Institute, with its unusually well-trained and highly specialized staff, and by successfully employing its procedures using comparatively untrained personnel, it was felt that this program might be applied …

Individualized Instruction In Contrast To Total Classroom Instruction In Vocabulary Development, James N. Haner Jan 1970

Individualized Instruction In Contrast To Total Classroom Instruction In Vocabulary Development, James N. Haner

All Master's Theses

The purpose of this pilot study was to test the null hypothesis there was no significant difference in methods used in teaching vocabulary development in an individualized method as opposed to normal classroom methods. It was also the purpose of this pilot study to: (1) compare the amount of progress in vocabulary development the girls made as to the amount of progress in vocabulary development the boys made; (2) compare the boys of the control group and the experimental group as to which made the greater gains in vocabulary development; (3) compare the girls of the control group and the …
