Using Tier 2 Interventions To Close The Achievement Gap In The Middle Grades, Megan Vanderloop
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
A Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) in a school district or building creates equitable learning opportunities for all students. Charles City MIddle School (CCMS) has spent the last few years focusing on tier one, which is the universal tier provided to all students. Now that CCMS has implemented strong tier one instruction across the building, their tier two supports for students are an area in need of improvement. The purpose of this school improvement plan is to implement an effective WIN (What I Need) time in seventh and eighth grades at CCMS. Providing interventions outside of the classroom on top …

The UMass Boston Early Education CUSP is led by a multidisciplinary team that designed the simulator and uses it to produce current, relevant, accurate, and responsive estimates about the key impacts of proposed legislation to expand access to affordable, quality child care and early education. One of the simulator’s valuable features is that it can produce estimates for a range of policy parameters and provisions. The team will release additional briefs in the coming months to offer a more detailed look at the impacts outlined in this initial publication. Other planned briefs will examine key topics, such as impacts related …
Additive Manufacturing For Medical Education, Michael Noon
Additive Manufacturing For Medical Education, Michael Noon
College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program
A growing body of evidence is suggesting that anatomical knowledge, the keystone of many medical specialties, is suffering among new graduates. While a host of reasons are provided, one common thread that many point to is the decline of cadaver dissections in the classroom. Many virtual audio-visual tools are used to address this gap, yet evidence has shown their ineffectiveness. Given this gap, the high degree of flexibility found in additive manufacturing (AM), and the many uses AM has already found in the medical field, we propose its use to fill this gap, allowing for students to learn with touch …

The Effectiveness Of Behavior Management Systems In Grade 5 Classrooms, Mihaela Colteanu
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
This action research project, conducted over a 6-week period, aimed to enhance classroom management techniques in response to evolving educational trends which emphasize students' self-regulation and intrinsic motivation. The study focused on a control and experimental group of grade 5 students, implementing two distinct behavior management systems: one grounded in a behavioral approach utilizing rewards and sanctions, and the other based on positive strategies. The researcher, a secondary school English teacher with 8 years international teaching experience, collected data through observations and interviews with former teachers. Even though the initial hypothesis proposed the superiority of a balanced system encompassing both …

Publications and Research
The transfer to the online environment in teaching necessitates artful communication so that students can gain from inquiry-based learning. As instructors use either in-person or online content delivery, Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) is one model that provides a solution to engage students in the learning process. The Peer Leaders, mentored by faculty, are the bridge between instructors and students. PLTL supports direct human interaction in both physical and digital environments for enhancing immersive learning and addresses the important task of preparing students for the 21st century.

A Mindful Search For Basic Writing Identities: Constellating Contemplative Classroom Pedagogies, Classroom Community Circles, And Critical Discourse Analysis In A Cultural Rhetorics Ecology, Elizabeth Edwards Weems
A Mindful Search For Basic Writing Identities: Constellating Contemplative Classroom Pedagogies, Classroom Community Circles, And Critical Discourse Analysis In A Cultural Rhetorics Ecology, Elizabeth Edwards Weems
English Theses & Dissertations
Many Basic Writing students have stories which are informed by traumas, othering, and marginalization. Finding pedagogies which address students’ stories, in addition to meeting academic goals, is crucial. Sometimes, students question how improving their reading and writing skills can help them navigate other areas of their education and experiences, especially their lives outside of academia. I have worked to create a kairotic pedagogy which invites students to read and write ‘the word and the world’ (Freire, 1970; 1988). Using Contemplative Classroom Pedagogies, I attempted to follow Freire’s (1992) call to make “teaching a creative act, a critical act, and not …
Emotional Intelligence In Difficult Decision-Making: A Multiple-Case Study Of Community College Academic Deans, Ekaterina Kalinina Brooks
Emotional Intelligence In Difficult Decision-Making: A Multiple-Case Study Of Community College Academic Deans, Ekaterina Kalinina Brooks
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
The decisions made by leaders noticeably impact employee morale and influence the fulfillment of the organizational mission. However, making decisions can be challenging when options are complex and involve multiple risks and benefits. Navigating such decisions in an era of technology when decisions are more transparent than ever before can be particularly difficult for academic deans in community colleges. These mid-level administrators often face internal conflicts stemming from the nature of their positions, campus politics, and the challenge of working between the competing interests of faculty and senior leaders.
Over the last three decades, research has pointed out that strong …

How Does Nutrition, Exercise, Sleep, And Phone Addiction Affect Elementary Student Learning?, Madeline (Marston) Ballis
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Ballis, M. (2023). How does Nutrition, Exercise, Sleep, and Phone Addiction affect Elementary Student Learning? The research question addressed in this capstone is “How can elementary schools foster learning through the awareness of healthy lifestyle behaviors, such as nutrition, exercise, sleep, and healthy phone use in low-income students and families?” This paper follows the research of me, Madeline Ballis, a fourth grade teacher, as I discover the importance of healthy lifestyle behaviors for elementary students, specifically those from low socioeconomic status (SES) families. The research was inspired by my past experience in studying psychology and personal experience with each of …
A Plurilingual Approach For Secondary Efl Students In Panama, Charlie Kersey
A Plurilingual Approach For Secondary Efl Students In Panama, Charlie Kersey
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
This capstone project was guided by the following research question: How can we develop a pedagogy for emerging bilingual EFL students that leverages their full linguistic potential? The research question was identified in response to the shortcomings of an English immersion program that was not promoting the full linguistic potential of its bilingual students. This paper pursues solutions to this problem through a multidisciplinary literature review designed to explore the benefits of bilingualism, how to increase language awareness among students, as well as the explicit use of students’ L1 to learn a L2. Topics explored in the literature review include …
Role Playing Gamification In The Science Classroom, Timothy Normandt
Role Playing Gamification In The Science Classroom, Timothy Normandt
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Invented in 1972, Dungeons & Dragons was a brand new way to play games—utilizing the strongest computer humans have ever conceived: the human brain. This project strives to categorize some of the techniques used in the classroom as role playing in their own right. The purpose of all gamification, role playing and SEL, and the satanic panic that came out against Dungeons & Dragons are looked at. This paper additionally looks at some examples of role playing in the classroom that have succeeded at a small charter school in Minneapolis. These findings underscore the equity achieved by allowing for student …
Relationship Between Learning Communities And Campus Residency On Sense Of Belonging Among First Year Undergraduates, Lanah Kathryn Stafford
Relationship Between Learning Communities And Campus Residency On Sense Of Belonging Among First Year Undergraduates, Lanah Kathryn Stafford
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
In higher education, sense of belonging has been linked to improved outcomes such as retention and academic achievement (e,g., Pittman & Richmond, 2007). Previous research has also identified participation in learning communities and campus residency as interventions which improve sense of belonging for students in this context (e.g., Solanki et al., 2019; Soria & Roberts, 2021). However, little research has been conducted to empirically study sense of belonging as a multidimensional construct, and no research has investigated interactions between on-campus residency and learning community participation on its development.
Data were collected from 1,072 first-year students on the Sense of Belonging …
Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Self-Identified Politically Conservative Students In Graduate Counseling Programs In Public Universities, Elizabeth A. Orrison
Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Self-Identified Politically Conservative Students In Graduate Counseling Programs In Public Universities, Elizabeth A. Orrison
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
Professionals within the fields of social science predominantly identify as liberal (Woessner & Kelly-Woessner, 2015) and many issues related to politics, such as power and oppression, are inherent and central to the social science fields (Lerner, 2020). Past research has shown the potential for political bias in academia, which has been linked to the lack of representation of various political identities. Most research on political academic bias is not current, making it difficult to find relevant research on this topic published within the last ten years. Currently, there has been no identified research or scholarly production that specifically explores self-identified …

Hacking The Library Exhibition Designs, Karen Diaz
Hacking The Library Exhibition Designs, Karen Diaz
Hacking the Library
The hacker ethos in the positive sense is about the ability to deconstruct and reconstruct information systems. Hacking starts with reconceptualizing libraries. Libraries are now beyond the book. As libraries evolve into a new sort of space --still a space for research, learning and study-- but also for community engagement and collaboration, library exhibits present a unique opportunity for both collaborating exhibitors and library users. Artists engage with libraries creatively through artist residencies, installations, using discarded library materials in their work, collaborative workshops, digital collections remixing, performances and more. Hacking the Library will present artwork that highlights the intersecting values …

Teaching Cells To Diverse Learners In The Modern Classroom, Avery Tully
Teaching Cells To Diverse Learners In The Modern Classroom, Avery Tully
Inclusive Strategies for Teaching Secondary Mathematics and Science
During this lesson, my main focus was to engage students in deeper learning about the importance of cells and all the aspects of structure, function, and history. My classroom is extremely diverse as I teach in Northern Virginia, a true melting pot. I have attached the population of minorities in Northern Virginia. This shows that over half of the population is minorities, well over the national average. You will also see the graph of ESOL homes in Northern Virginia. This graph shows that over 35% of homes in Northern Virginia speak another primary language other than English in their homes.
