"Operation Motivation" - Samuel Shepard Jr., Nicalee Stephens-Wilson
Dissertations
African-American students have often faced systemic oppression and racial inequities as learners in the United States. Public schools in their communities lacked the resources to offer full access to a fair and equitable education. For years, human rights activists fought for radical changes in public schools. Finally, in 1954, the U. S. Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education ruled segregation in public schools unconstitutional. The Brown decision did not have the power to eliminate the long-established segregation practices. Nor did it grant access to educational equity for children of color. Dr. Samuel Shepard Jr. began his work in …

Cognitive Engagement During Group Learning Activities In Chemistry Courses: An Analysis Of Student Discourse, Safaa Youssef El-Mansy
Cognitive Engagement During Group Learning Activities In Chemistry Courses: An Analysis Of Student Discourse, Safaa Youssef El-Mansy
Dissertations and Theses
As educators, our goal is to help our students be successful, but in order to accomplish this, we need to understand what factors contribute to student success. One factor, small-group active learning, has been correlated to improved academic outcomes; however, the magnitude of this improvement can vary across different courses, different types of group work, and even across courses that use the same group work structure. Therefore, it is important to understand what aspects of group work contribute to its effectiveness. The work presented in this dissertation investigated one specific aspect: students’ cognitive engagement. This was done by analyzing the …

An Intersection Of Science & Art: Vitrification Approaches And Open-Fabricated Tools For The Biomedical Model Sea Hare, Aplysia Californica, Allyssa M. Oune
LSU Master's Theses
The California sea hare (Aplysia californica) is an important biomedical model for molecular neurobiology, electrophysiology, learning, and memory due to their well-mapped and large neurons and well-characterized learning capabilities. The National Resource for Aplysia (NRA, University of Miami) maintains large stocks of live animals and relies on regular shipments of wild-caught individuals to maintain genetic diversity. This is labor and cost-intensive, and environmental changes could alter the availability of wild animals increasing the need to preserve this genetic resource. One solution is vitrification, ultra-fast cooling which produces an amorphous glass that minimizes damage to cells. Aplysia californica presents …

Family Caregivers: From Invisible To Visible Within The Healthcare Continuum, Tara Anglim
Family Caregivers: From Invisible To Visible Within The Healthcare Continuum, Tara Anglim
Theses & Dissertations
As the United States' aging population rapidly grows, the prevalence of adults with chronic illness or disabilities who require intermittent or long-term caregiving from family members also increases. Despite the prevalence of caregiving, the role of the family caregiver is a label that lacks a clear description, definition, or societal understanding. The inability to identify family caregivers creates negative ramifications, including diminished recognition and support throughout the healthcare continuum. Drawing from caregiver identity theory, this qualitative phenomenological study aimed to describe the experiences of family caregivers to promote a deeper understanding of how they became aware of their caregiver identity …

The Lived Experience Of Second-Degree Nursing Students’ Anxiety Before And During Their Initial Clinical Rotation, Shelly Wheatley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
Anxiety in nursing students can impact learning. Literature has shown that nursing students, especially those in second-degree nursing programs, report higher stress levels compared to other undergraduate students (Penprase & Koczara, 2009). Nursing clinicals can be jarring for students and present many stressors that can impeded learning and cause poor clinical performance. Much research has been done about traditional undergraduate students’ feelings of anxiety. There is a noted gap in research of second-degree, accelerated nursing students and their feelings about their initial clinical placement. Comparisons have often been made between traditional and nontraditional students, but the lived experiences of second-degree …
