Mothers' Perceptions Of Stigma: Implications For Early Identification And Treatment For Children With A History Of Prenatal Opioid Exposure, Pamela Jane Holland Jan 2024

Mothers' Perceptions Of Stigma: Implications For Early Identification And Treatment For Children With A History Of Prenatal Opioid Exposure, Pamela Jane Holland

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

There is a lack of research that specifies the long-term effects on a child’s language development when prenatally exposed to opioids (Fill et al.,2018; Rutherford et al., 2022). Despite this, children prenatally exposed to opioids are more likely to be referred for, qualify for, and receive therapy services secondary to developmental delays and speech/language deficits. (Kaltenbach et al., 2018). Stigma continues to be a barrier to the initiation of early intervention services for children prenatally exposed to opioids (Levickis et al., 2020; Livingston et al., 2011; Peacock-Chambers et al., 2020). This phenomenological study aims to understand the perceptions of the …

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this narrative study was to explore secondary ELA teachers’ perceptions of teaching and learning in a technology-rich educational environment. This study was conducted in a central high school district in New York state across four school buildings. Though the central high school district provides uniform guidance and material for the instructional programs in all high school buildings, the execution of instruction and teacher development happens daily in the buildings themselves. Though one district, each building serves distinct communities with pronounced school cultures stemming from varying student and faculty demographics, as well as building leadership. The researcher explored …

Is Proximity Enough? A Case Study Examining A College Access Program On The Grounds Of Public Housing On The West Coast, Nicole S. Berry Jan 2024

Is Proximity Enough? A Case Study Examining A College Access Program On The Grounds Of Public Housing On The West Coast, Nicole S. Berry

Theses and Dissertations

The issue of college access for students from low-income communities has been a longstanding challenge in American higher education. Despite numerous efforts to address the gaps in college attendance and graduation rates between students from low-income and more affluent communities, the problem remains present. This has led to a need for an in-depth analysis of college access programming explicitly tailored to low-income communities, particularly those residing in public housing authorities. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD, 2016) has recognized this need by funding and piloting college access programs in several public housing authorities around the United States. These …

Cultural Responsiveness Training In Teacher Preparation Programs: A Qualitative Case Study, Loraine Keriece Richardson Mccray Jan 2024

Cultural Responsiveness Training In Teacher Preparation Programs: A Qualitative Case Study, Loraine Keriece Richardson Mccray

Theses and Dissertations

The American education system has experienced a change in the racial and ethnic background of the student population nationally and in the Long Island, New York region. Yet, the teaching population remains mostly white and female. Teacher preparation programs train teachers in content, pedagogy, and adolescent development. During the training, teachers need to develop their ability to connect and understand their students' cultural and racial norms that may not exist in their program of study. This is no fault of the teacher or program but may be an inherent piece missing from the systems established to credential preservice educators. With …

Assessing The Relationship Between Intercultural Competence And Inclusion Competence: An Empirical Study Of Faculty At Higher Education Institutions In The United States, Casey Aldrich

Dissertation Collection

This dissertation explores the relationship between faculty’s intercultural competence and their inclusion competence within the context of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the United States. The construct of intercultural competence refers to effectiveness in engaging people across cultural differences, while inclusion competence focuses on competences critical for effective performance related to inclusive behavior. Studying these two constructs together provides insight into the potential of intercultural education to contribute to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts at US HEIs, especially in terms of fostering inclusive learning environments. Drawing from data collected using two psychometric assessments – the Intercultural Effectiveness Scale (IES) …

"I’M Not Teaching Them Per Se": Designing And Delivering Asynchronous Undergraduate Online Stem Courses, Regina L. Garza Mitchell, Whitney Decamp, Brian Horvitz, Megan Grunert Kowalske, Cherrelle Singleton

Instruments for Measuring Online Teaching Practices

Although online courses have been a part of academia for nearly 30 years, they are still perceived as “different” than face-to-face instruction. Through in-depth interviews with four instructors, we explored how STEM faculty approach teaching asynchronous online undergraduate STEM courses. The faculty interviewed for this study viewed online courses as “not regular class[es]” and teaching those classes as “not teaching per se.” Each of the instructors had assumptions about what a classroom was and about good instruction, but even for instructors who taught online for multiple years, those assumptions remained grounded in the face-to-face environment. There is a need for …

Developing An Observation Protocol For Online Stem Courses, Brian Horvitz, Whitney Decamp, Regina L. Garza Mitchell, Megan Grunert Kowalske, Cherrelle Singleton

Instruments for Measuring Online Teaching Practices

The use of online instruction for undergraduate STEM courses is growing rapidly. While researchers and practitioners have access to validated instruments for studying the practice of teaching in face-to-face classrooms, analogous tools do not yet exist for online instruction. These tools are needed for quality design and control purposes. To meet this need, this project developed an observational protocol that can be used to collect non-evaluative data for the description, study, and improvement of online, undergraduate STEM courses. The development of this instrument used a sequential exploratory mixed methods approach to the research, design, pilot-testing, refinement and implementation of the …

Avatar - Identity With Intent, John O'Connor, James Neville

Conference Papers

We don’t often think of identity as a choice, but rather something we are born into by circumstance of birth and inheritance. This paper addresses identity by assertion. Virtual worlds afford the opportunity for a more fluid concept of self: identity with intent. Understanding this approach can empower our actions and results in the virtual and natural worlds. The authors draw on fifteen years teaching this topic in the virtual world of Second Life as part of a class on collaborative online engagement. The term avatar, representing the concrete embodiment of something abstract, originated in Hinduism in the 6th century …

DOES PATH MATTER: A QUANTITATIVE STUDY EXAMINING MATHEMATICS COURSE-TAKING PATTERNS AND DEGREE OR TRANSFER ATTAINMENT

Abstract

This quantitative study, guided by Bean and Metzner’s (1985) student attrition model, examined whether mathematics course-taking pattern is associated with a students’ chances of attaining degree or transfer at a community college. Six years of student data from a midwestern community college was used. Descriptive statistics of student course-taking patterns highlighted that more full-time and college level students enrolled in mathematics immediately while part-time and developmental level students delayed their enrollment in mathematics coursework. Contradicting assumptions at the midwestern community college under study, it …

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Student self-efficacy is a student’s belief that they can perform the tasks required to be successful in an academic setting. The focus of this research is how those beliefs are formed, how they impact student performance, and how teachers can increase student self-efficacy in the classroom. Self-efficacy foundations are examined as well as the impact positive self-efficacy beliefs have on student behavior and achievement. Educational practices that increase student self-efficacy are also summarized. A guide to implementing these strategies in the science classroom with an example is given, and connections to other research and future considerations are discussed.

Flipping The Classroom: Exploring Engagement, Technology, And Student Perceptions, Ryan J. Oden Jan 2024

Flipping The Classroom: Exploring Engagement, Technology, And Student Perceptions, Ryan J. Oden

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This literature review examined the effects of the flipped classroom on student engagement, perceptions, and academic performance. It reviewed studies comparing student outcomes in flipped classrooms to traditional classrooms. Meta-analyses were used to support overall trends. Quantitative and qualitative results were used to support the effects in five areas of the flipped classroom: independent learning, active in-class sessions, teacher-student interaction, technology, and academic performance. Results suggest that the emphasis on independent learning fosters self-regulation, but students may require support when transitioning to this new model. Technology tools were shown to enhance out-of-class learning and motivation. The model facilitated stronger student-teacher …
