A Phenomenological Study Of Resource Parents' Experiences Providing For The Educational Needs Of Children With Adverse Childhood Experiences, Skyler Nicole Wells

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to examine the lived experience that resource parents (e.g., kinship, foster, adoptive) undergo to care for the education needs of their children with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). The theory guiding this study is Bandura’s theory on social learning (1977). Bandura explained how behaviors and skills from a model were used to guide the central research question: What are the lived experiences of resource parents caring for the educational needs of children with ACEs? Data was collected from 12 adults living in a rural county in Virginia using writing prompts, interviews, and focus …

The Impact Of Women’S Roles In The Preservation Of Nature: Analysis Of Ecofeminism On Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk, U'Um Qomariyah, Sumartini Sumartini, Qurrota Ayu Neina, Dyah Prabaningrum

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

The roots of the catastrophe, environmental pollution, and the decline in culture are the empirical assumptions of positivistic humans. A strategy of deconstructing and reconstructing the epistemological framework of knowledge is needed through the creation (counter) of a positivistic view that can determine the attitudes and roles of a person, both men and women, towards the environment. On this basis, this article aimed to explain women's role in preserving nature as a critical analysis of the ecological perspectives of literary texts. This research utilized qualitative descriptive and ecofeminist methods in the eco-criticism discourse. The ecofeminist method refers to methods related …

Gender, Graduate School Stage, And The Impostor Phenomenon, John-Scott B. Kelley, Angela T. Barlow Feb 2024

Gender, Graduate School Stage, And The Impostor Phenomenon, John-Scott B. Kelley, Angela T. Barlow

Journal of Graduate Education Research

The impostor phenomenon (IP) includes five central factors: (a) a sense of fraudulence or phoniness; (b) a fear of failure and discovery; (c) compensatory perfectionism (i.e., procrastination and/or over-preparation); (d) interpersonal anxiety; and (e) externalized success and/or discounted positive feedback. After the final stage, the process starts over with reinforced vigor, creating a self-reinforcing cycle in which success is associated with psychological suffering. IP was initially used to describe the reports of high-achieving women, but recent studies have shown that IP is experienced across genders. Additionally, while graduate school is an achievement-oriented environment with many characteristics that could promote IP, …

Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) are often characterized as Hispanic enrolling (rather than serving) that practice deficit-based systems that continue to marginalize Latinx and other underrepresented students, especially in STEM fields. Extant research on HSIs stresses the importance of investigating the value of grassroots advocacy groups as external influencers of institutional servingness through deeper engagement with the Latinx community. Using a novel family-centered theory of change that addresses diversity, equity, and inclusion, we integrated intersectionality and servingness into a family-integrated education serving and transforming academic framework. We investigated the potential transformational impact of this framework on students, families, faculty, and administrators at …

A Qualitative Examination Of Teachers’ Experiences Building Student Resilience In Rural Kenya, Priscilla Ann Stafford Allen Feb 2024

A Qualitative Examination Of Teachers’ Experiences Building Student Resilience In Rural Kenya, Priscilla Ann Stafford Allen

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Students in rural and underresourced school settings often perform poorly due to adversity. This is evident in subcounty schools where challenges such as domestic violence and low socioeconomic status further impact students' academic performance. Researchers have demonstrated that the relationship between students and teachers is instrumental in building resilience and developing social emotional competence. By fostering resilience, teachers can play a crucial role in mitigating these challenges. However, few studies have examined teacher experience in building resilience in students through a qualitative study. Using a generic qualitative descriptive study and grounded in the theory of resilience, semistructured interviews were completed …

Effects Of Inclusive Prekindergarten Programs On Developmental Skills Of Typically Developing Children, Danita Duhart Feb 2024

Effects Of Inclusive Prekindergarten Programs On Developmental Skills Of Typically Developing Children, Danita Duhart

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 set forth guidelines for inclusionary practices to ensure that students with disabilities were educated with their nondisabled peers. In early childhood education, there was a paucity of information that addressed, in quantifiable terms, the effect of inclusion on the developmental skills of typically developing children. The purpose of this quantitative, quasi-experimental, nonequivalent study was to examine to what extent the prekindergarten program delivery setting, inclusion versus noninclusion, effects the developmental domains of typically developing children. The theoretical framework was based on Arnold Gesell’s maturational theory of development. The developmental domains for typically …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Cortisol (CORT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) are two indicators of stress and are linked to tissue inflammation and illness. Increased stress and inflammation have been shown to decrease cognitive functioning, leading to diminished performance for athletes. Subjectively, athletes indicate fluctuations in stress, but few studies have assessed the physiological response of training and competition in elite female athletes. PURPOSE: The primary aim was to assess the acute response of CORT and CRP in Division I female lacrosse athletes during a high-stress week, including two games and three practices during the competitive season. The secondary aim was to assess the …
