The 2011 Vision & Change report outlined several recommendations for transforming undergraduate biology education, sparking multiple pedagogical reform efforts. Among these was the Promoting Active Learning and Mentoring (PALM) network, an NSF-funded program that provided mentorship and training to instructors on implementing active learning in the classroom. Here, we provide a perspective on how members of the biology education community in PALM view the recommendations of Vision & Change, drawing upon our experiences both as members of PALM and as leaders of an associated project funded by another NSF grant that hosted PALM alumni at various conferences. Today, there is a decline in creativity scores among U.S. students. This is concerning since many of these students will be the future leaders of organizations and communities. For this reason, this dissertation explores the creative process of visual artists to better understand how creativity can be cultivated. Curated undergraduate research experiences have been widely used at colleges and universities for decades to build student interest, technical preparation, and confidence in the pursuit of scientific careers. Educators often employ standardized survey instruments to evaluate learning outcomes for research experiences, but many of these assessments consider only technical skill development and career interests and are not rooted in discrete pedagogical theories. As higher education aims to create inclusive and equitable learning experiences for students, we argue that pedagogical assessment tools for undergraduate research experiences need to expand to consider outcomes such as increased science literacy, confidence in relational “soft” …

Childhood trauma is prevalent in epidemic proportions, with data showing 40%-90% of individuals experiencing one or more childhood traumatic events that permanently changes neurobiology and stress response. These stress responses can manifest in behaviors that lead to problems in schools, including behavior issues, special education referrals, suspensions or expulsions, and decreased academic achievement. In adulthood, these traumatic stressors increase the odds of engaging in risky behaviors and developing chronic health conditions. Schools can be places of healing, promoting resilience and utilizing trauma-informed practices to help children and educators. Black males comprise approximately 3% to 5% of the overall K-12 teaching workforce. The science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields are overrepresented in this shortage. This research project aimed to shed light on the experiences of Black male STEM educators to better understand what garnered their interests in STEM, and what ultimately led them to step into the STEM classroom. This study used a critical anti-deficit framework and hermeneutic phenomenological philosophy to understand the experiences of 10 Black male STEM educators in Alabama ranging from three to 30 years of teaching experience. Postpartum mental health is a critical, yet both clinically and socially underrecognized, component of maternal care. Postpartum depression (PPD) affects up to 1 in 7 mothers and significantly impacts both maternal and family well-being. The Postpartum Wellness Survey (PWS) was developed to assess the interconnected relationships among dietary quality and nutrition knowledge, postpartum mood and emotional health, and social determinants of health (SDOH). Twenty-four participants within 12 months of delivery completed the survey, which integrated validated psychological and dietary assessment tools to capture community-level patterns in postpartum wellness. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of young adults and recent high school graduates to gather information about their experience in K-12 educational environments to determine if their developmental needs were met. This study focused on youth who attended K-12 schools in a specific district in Southeast Michigan and participated in out-of-school time programs at a local teen center. Purpose: The purpose of this explanatory mixed methods study was to identify and describe the perceived impact of Johnson and Mohr’s (2013) five disruptive career skills on female medical education executives on their advancement to executive leadership positions.

Methodology: This study employed a sequential explanatory mixed methods approach to explore the career advancement strategies of female leaders in academic medicine. This research study investigated, analyzed, and compared stress, depression, and anxiety levels between parents who are long-term meditation practitioners and those who are not. By exploring questions related to the impact of mindfulness on parental stress levels, parent-child interactions, emotional awareness, self-regulation, and nonjudgmental acceptance, the research sheds light on the transformative potential of long-term meditation practices for mindful parenting. The study adopted a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative survey data with qualitative insights to provide a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. Researchers identified a gap in literature and suggested the need for further study by parents from all ethnic groups regarding their perceptions of their children’s school readiness. The participants in this qualitative study were Hmong female primary caregivers with low socioeconomic status. The purpose of the study was to gain insights into their beliefs about the significance of the kindergarten transition, assess their children’s readiness to transition to kindergarten, and determine their children’s preparedness for the kindergarten transition. Despite growing diversity in the U.S. population, Black women remain underrepresented in healthcare leadership roles. Barriers including limited access to mentorship, systemic bias, and financial constraints, contribute to disparities in career advancement. This research examines the role of culturally competent mentorship programs in addressing these barriers and fostering a diverse healthcare workforce. Drawing from peer-reviewed literature, workforce development models, and Critical Race Theory, this review highlights the impact of mentorship on professional retention, leadership development, and the quality of healthcare delivery in marginalized communities. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) as defined by Drs. Felitti and Anda are prevalent in the general population of the United States. These childhood traumas have a profound and lasting impact on emotional, psychological, and social development, often disrupting academic trajectories and life outcomes. This qualitative phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of six college graduates in a suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota, who endured high levels of ACEs yet succeeded in overcoming adversity to achieve academic and personal success. Adolescents around the world were impacted by social isolation resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Students experienced sudden school closures and isolation from classmates resulting in increased screen time, the erosion of social skills, lower academic motivation, and a period of unstructured and unfamiliar learning (Hong et al., 2022; Kannan & Veazie, 2023; Leventhal & Morishta, 2024; Menzies et al., 2024; Warford, 2019). Current research is working to measure the impact and severity of these factors.
