Should Courts Trial Juveniles As Adults, Dylan Velasco Mar 2025

Should Courts Trial Juveniles As Adults, Dylan Velasco

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

The question of whether juveniles should be charged as adults in the criminal justice system is a controversial issue. Some scholars argue that charging juveniles as adults for serious offenses, such as violent crimes, is necessary for ensuring accountability, protecting public safety, and deterring future crimes. Charging juveniles as adults sends a clear message about severity of criminal actions, regardless of the perpetrator's age, and provide a means to safeguard communities by incarcerating dangerous individuals on adult facilities. However, other scholars highlight that developmental differences exist between juveniles and adults. For instance, adolescent brains are still maturing, particularly in areas …

Is There A Relationship Between Drug Addiction And Incarceration?, Lindsey M. Lopez

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

The connection between drug addiction and incarceration has been widely debated. Many individuals who struggle with substance abuse will end up in the criminal justice system, mainly due to drug-related crimes or offenses committed under the influence like DUI’s. This study examines whether incarceration is effective in solving substance abuse issues or if alternative approaches such as rehabilitation, offer better results. The analysis explores the balance between punishment and treatment programs to determine what the most effective strategy is in reducing recidivism and addressing why drug addiction is high in the justice system.

Ai Meets Advocacy: A Pilot Study On Teaching Victim Advocacy Using Boodlebox Chatbot, Ziwei Qi

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in the criminal justice system, including crime prediction, sentencing, and victim services. While AI tools offer benefits—such as identifying intimate partner violence and child abuse—scholars caution against bias, lack of transparency, and victim-blaming, particularly in apps and risk assessment models. Building on these insights, a new pedagogical model was developed to train future victim advocates using AI simulations. Through platforms like Boodlebox, students engage in structured, trauma-informed dialogues with AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and “Ruth” from the National Domestic Violence Hotline. The curriculum focuses on experiential learning, client-centered practice, and ethical engagement with …

The Moderating Effect Of Emotional Intelligence On Teacher Self-Efficacy And Burnout, Ronda L. Kutcherman

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The number of teachers who are leaving the profession is exponentially increasing. Teachers are emotionally exhausted. In addition to the professional description and the job demands of teaching are the psychological stresses and emotional strains experienced by many teachers. These stresses and strains are linked to the professional workload that teachers manage daily. Excessive paperwork, attendance at meetings, participation in professional development after school hours, carrying work home, and the expectation to provide instruction for diverse student ability levels or academic needs are part of the workload. This study aimed to measure the moderating effect that emotional intelligence (EI) has …

Forensic Evidence And Its Effect On The Criminal Legal System, Kelsie L. Winter, April Terry

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

The use of forensic evidence is a relatively new initiative, gaining momentum and popularity in the 1980s and 1990s, for its role in addressing wrongful convictions. Yet, with advancements still being achieved, mistakes have been uncovered. In the criminal legal system, inaccurate evidence and/or information can be a barrier for seeking justice. Collectively, estimates suggest forensic errors occur in anywhere between 46-100% of forensic cases, with varying errors occurring based on the type of evidence (e.g., forensic pathology vs. seized drug analysis). As such, this literature review outlines the unreliable aspects of forensic evidence, the misinterpretation of such findings, and …

Guardians Or Bystanders? Examining School Shooting Responses In The Southern United States, Andre L. Tompkins Ed.D.

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

School shootings challenge educational safety, demanding effective leadership strategies. The Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas, which claimed the lives of 19 children and 2 teachers, heightened concerns about campus vulnerabilities, urging administrators to prioritize student protection. I performed a qualitative study interviewing principals, teachers, parents, and community leaders to examine their experiences addressing campus threats. The findings revealed three themes: (1) ineffective leadership affects campus safety, (2) prompt actions enhance trust in leadership, and (3) connecting with others enhances safety. In this study, I spotlight the crucial role that proactive leadership plays in building the coalitions needed to …

A Review Of The Ripple Effect Of Parental Incarceration: Suggestions For System Improvement From Neonatal Development Through Adolescence, Karen Thew, April Terry

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

Parental incarceration has the potential to drastically affect the social, behavioral, and physical lives of children. Such negative impacts include prenatal and chronic health conditions, behavioral and mental health issues, developmental delays, juvenile and criminal legal system involvement, and overall declines in well-being. These damaging outcomes occur for babies delivered during their mothers’ incarceration with negative lingering effects seen throughout the lifespan. Due to the stigmatization of incarceration, these children may experience bullying, engage in isolating behaviors, and struggle within the school, which may lead to the school-to-prison pipeline. While prevention and intervention services directed at these youth could not …

Previous scholars in counselor education and supervision have conducted content analysis studies that uncover interesting trends and patterns about topics important to the field. In this study, we conducted a content analysis of Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) national conference session descriptions (N = 8,395) from 1988 to 2021. Values, trends, and topics relevant to multicultural training, counselor education, supervision, professional orientation and ethics, and counselor training were most prominent while career and rehabilitation related topics were featured significantly less. Implications for ways ACES leadership and conference planners can improve national conferences and areas for future research …
