Exogenous Shocks And Teachers’ Motivation To Learn: Pandemic And Professional Development In The United States, Justin J. West Phd, Ann Marie Stanley, Aina K. Appova
International Journal for Research in Education
Abstract
In this article, we examine how the COVID-19 pandemic, an exogenous shock to the United States education system, shaped teachers’ readiness and willingness to engage in professional development (PD). We borrow the concept of exogenous shocks from economics and sociology to illustrate how education practice can be driven as much by factors outside the field (e.g., viral outbreaks) as by those within it (e.g., policy and scholarship). Using the four substantive domains in Appova and Arbaugh’s (2018) framework on teachers' motivation to learn in PD—teacher education and PD, educational psychology, andragogy and adult learning, and policy and accountability—we argue …

A Mixed-Methods Exploration Study On Trauma-Informed Practices Used To Dismantle The School-To-Prison Pipeline In Public And Private Schools In The City Of St. Louis, Jennifer Lauren Gabrian
Dissertations
Since the release of the Missouri Model for Trauma-Informed Schools approved by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) in 2019, school leaders were given the opportunity to start the process of meeting the emotional and fundamental needs of students. With the effects of trauma reaching all diverse groups of race, gender, economic status, and community surroundings, there is an increased need to use the education system to reach students emotionally. Though the model is a blueprint for schools, school districts are not required to adopt this model and implement it within their districts. Due to the recent pandemic, …

Three Boys, Three Murders: Children’S Rights, State Violence And The Open Wound Of The U.S.-Mexico Border, Genevieve M. Negrón-Gonzales
International Journal of Human Rights Education
This article examines the killing of three teenage boys at the U.S.-Mexico border between 2010 and 2013. Through an examination of these murders at the hands of U.S. Border Patrol and Customs and Border Enforcement agents, the article argues that the murders of Sergio Adrían Hernández Guereca, José Antonio Elena Rodríguez and Cruz Marcelino Velasquez Acevedo at the U.S.-Mexico border exemplify the reality that not all children are afforded the so-called universal protection of childhood as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and other international human rights law. We can see how the state …

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
The value of academic advising has been increasingly emphasized in higher education. In this study, attention is given to the most significant types of advice that a sample of cybersecurity faculty and advisors from the Commonwealth of Virginia recommend giving to cybersecurity students. The results show that faculty and advisors recommended that students be aware of six different aspects of cybersecurity education including the value of experience, the need for lifelong learning, the importance of hard work, the need to develop technical skills, the interdisciplinary nature of cybersecurity, and the need to develop liberal arts or professional/soft skills. Implications of …

280 Characters To § 230 Immunity: Protecting Individual Sexual Assault Allegations On Twitter From Defamation Liability, Elizabeth Profaci
280 Characters To § 230 Immunity: Protecting Individual Sexual Assault Allegations On Twitter From Defamation Liability, Elizabeth Profaci
William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice
One in four female undergraduate students has been sexually assaulted. These students are three times more likely to experience sexual violence than any other group. Frustrated with the Title IX process on their campuses and the lack of discipline for their assailants, these students are unlikely to report their assault. Instead, they quietly tell their friends and other students, and in some cases, anonymously share their stories online. But instead of receiving support, these survivors are often faced with lawsuits. Accused assailants are using, or threatening to use, defamation lawsuits in an attempt to silence survivors who speak out, even …
The College Experience Podcast: Connecting Student Services For College Success, Lucila Sanchez
The College Experience Podcast: Connecting Student Services For College Success, Lucila Sanchez
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
What do we know about orienting college students on how to successfully manage the college experience? With this podcast, I aim to answer that question. The podcast aims to serve two purposes. The first purpose is to transmit the information to the students. The secondary purpose is to support student development by increasing knowledge about a wide range of topics as well as available services and resources. The goal is for students to become more aware of how they can access and use these services most effectively and how to manage their time to access essential services that support their …

Andragogy: The Common Thread In The Teaching Of Adults In Colleges Of Education, Criminal Justice, And Health Management, Grant J. Shostak, Larry Acker, Vanessa Vandergraaf
Faculty Scholarship
The Covid-19 pandemic has brought dramatic changes to higher education. Students and educators face challenges never anticipated, including switching classes from on-ground to online and back again, mental fatigue, stress, and burnout. Faculty across disciplines may turn to Andragogy to best teach college students to inform their teaching practices. This paper demonstrates how professors from education, criminal justice, and healthcare management have used andragogical techniques in their classrooms.

Beyond The School Walls: Collective Impact In Micropolitan School-Community Partnerships, Sarah Zuckerman
Beyond The School Walls: Collective Impact In Micropolitan School-Community Partnerships, Sarah Zuckerman
Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications
Research suggests that the time students spend outside of school, as well as the communities in which they spend it, impact educational outcomes. Inequitable educational outcomes are the result of complex, interdependent problems in the public and private sector, suggesting the need for approaches that bring together schools with other organizations to address problems in the ecological and developmental systems of family, school, out-of-school programs, and communities. Collective impact has gained prominence as a strategy for such cross-sector partnerships. This qualitative study uses a comparative approach to extend knowledge of collective impact into rural and micropolitan communities using civic capacity …

Bringing our collective experiences of past collaborations through a virtual connection, we created an international research team of 16 multidiscipline, multicultural, and multilingual academic women called “COVID GAP” (Gendered Academic Productivity) to explore the ongoing challenges and effects of COVID-19. Identifying as insider researchers, we engaged in a two-phase, primarily qualitative research project to better understand the lived experiences of academics during the pandemic. Our past individual experiences with cooperative research informed our roles and responsibilities and how we organized and communicated. This article is a reflection of how COVID GAP has refined our collaborative process in response to an …

Healing Racial Injustice With Mindfulness Research, Training, & Practice, Danielle "Danae" Laura
Mindfulness Studies Theses
This thesis offers a collection of authors and studies in support of improved research, training, and practice connecting mindfulness with racial justice through intergroup applications. The paper identifies barriers at work (e.g., colorblindness, spiritual bypass, white fragility, and implicit bias) in contemplative science, Western Buddhist communities, and secular mindfulness centers, which block the sizeable contributions possible in studying the intergroup application of mindfulness practice—specifically Lovingkindness Meditation, among others—when used as an intervention with anti-racist aims. Through secondary qualitative research, I reviewed six key works from Black authors on mindfulness and race, as well as six sample studies on the prosocial …

A Narrative Study Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Formerly Incarcerated Youth And Their Motivation For Re-Entering The Public Education System, Dominique Ramos
Theses and Dissertations
Nearly 34% of students who drop out of high school do so due to being incarcerated. Research has shown that students of color and those receiving special education services are at an increased risk of transitioning from the public education system to the criminal justice system in what is referred to as the School-to-Prison-Pipeline (Annamma, 2015; Barnes & Motz, 2018; Hart & Mueller, 2012; Pyle, Flower, Fall, & Williams, 2016). A bigger issue than the graduation rate is understanding what motivates students to return to public education, post-incarceration, to complete their high school requirements as told by the students. For …

The Influence Of Restorative Practice On School Climate, Kay E. Lister
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The impact of restorative practices on school climate is affirmed as the fostering of teacher-student relationship impacts connection, empathy, and social skills. Bullying decreased, self-advocacy increased, and school communities became both more present and calmer comparatively. Communication increased with an acquisition of restorative language, learning outcomes increased when students were in the classroom, and authenticity was formed. The mode of restorative intervention was interchangeable to best meet the needs of the proactive or reactive approach. The impact of school climate and the longevity of restorative practice was dependent upon the process of implementation, the culture of the school, and investment …

A Study On Formerly Incarcerated Women From Appalachia Pursuing Higher Education, Marcie Simms
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The pursuit of higher education is a goal that is embedded in secondary education and often correlated with the American dream. This study concentrated on the barriers that women with a felony conviction face when pursuing higher education after incarceration. Based on the identified barriers, current best practices for admission to higher education institutions and individual resources available for the ex-offender population were assessed. Using a questionnaire and interviews, a qualitative research approach helped identify the barriers that women with a felony conviction face when pursuing education and best practice solutions for institutions of higher education when working with the …

Stigmatized Discretion: A Survey Of The Impact Of Stigma Associated With Substance Use Disorder On The Hiring Of Teachers In Recovery, Nick Hoskins Roberts
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of stigma associated with substance use disorder (SUD) on the hiring of teacher-applicants in recovery. The ongoing opioid epidemic has dealt many disastrous blows to the United States, particularly in the Appalachian region of the country. As the coal industry was declining in the 1990s and 2000s, prescription opioids flooded the state of West Virginia, bringing with them a dwindling economy and a rise in crime rates, unemployment, and overdoses. Recent legislation has helped in pharmaceutical accountability/regulation and recovery options for individuals suffering from SUD. As more people in recovery …
Disciplinary Policies And Practices: Dismantling The School To Prison Pipeline, Ricky Johnson
Disciplinary Policies And Practices: Dismantling The School To Prison Pipeline, Ricky Johnson
Education Projects
Dismantling the school-to-prison pipeline has been a problem for decades that seems to have come to no answer. This project aims to analyze the current conditions and create ways to dismantle the pipeline through new policy, leadership, alternative practices, and school/ community programs. The disproportionate rates of suspension and expulsion and their ties to the juvenile justice system, along with everything dealing with education, should be alarming to most. However, far too often, these alarming numbers are swept under the rug. It is beyond time for disciplinary policy and practice change on a micro and macro level; something must be …
