Teachers' Perceptions Of High-Quality Instructional Materials In Tennessee Urban Elementary Schools, Christa D. Stewart
Teachers' Perceptions Of High-Quality Instructional Materials In Tennessee Urban Elementary Schools, Christa D. Stewart
Ed.D. Dissertations
Urban schools faced challenges that included limited resources, diverse student populations, and varying levels of student preparedness. I designed this study to better understand the perceptions of urban elementary teachers regarding their perceptions related to the implementation of high-quality instructional materials. For this study, I used a qualitative, interpretive method and collected data through questionnaires and interviews from urban elementary teachers in Tennessee. 24 participants provided data for this research. Due to a gap in existing research related to high-quality instructional materials implementation and support, especially at the foundational elementary level, the purpose of this qualitative, interpretive study was to …

’We Didn’T Think It Would Be Well Received’: The Gay Alliance Of Students’ Legal Victory Over Virginia Commonwealth University, 1974–1976, Michael S. Hevel, Timothy Reese Cain
Rehabilitation, Human Resources and Communication Disorders Faculty Publications and Presentations
In 1974, a group of college students attempted to undertake the simple act of registering an official student organization at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). In contrast to every other student group that had sought such status, the group, the Gay Alliance of Students (GAS), was denied registration. They were denied because the group was composed of LGBTQI+ students who wanted to promote the well-being and understanding of themselves and other LGBTQI+ individuals on campus. This article examines the founding, experience, and legal battles of GAS, an important organization in both the history of LGBTQI+ students and the history of LGBTQI+ …
Portland State And The Downtown Portland Plan - 50 Years Later With Ethan Seltzer, Ethan Seltzer
Portland State And The Downtown Portland Plan - 50 Years Later With Ethan Seltzer, Ethan Seltzer
PDXPLORES Podcast
Fifty years ago, the City of Portland developed a plan for the downtown corridor with a radical vision of what a central city could be. The downtown we know today is the result of that plan. In this episode of PDXPLORES, Professor Emeritus Ethan Seltzer discusses the 1972 downtown plan and how Portland State evolved into an urban-serving university alongside the downtown corridor.

Exploring School Psychologists' Perceived Preparedness, Self-Efficacy, And Motivations For Practice In Urban Schools, Kiley Callahan
Exploring School Psychologists' Perceived Preparedness, Self-Efficacy, And Motivations For Practice In Urban Schools, Kiley Callahan
Dissertations
The fundamental goal of school psychological service delivery is to enhance the learning and mental health of all students, regardless of their school setting. However, there is evidence to suggest that school psychologists' professional needs and experiences may differ based on the context in which they work. The urban school context, in particular, is associated with several challenges that may impact school psychology practice, including the impact of systemic barriers, systematic marginalization of children and families, and limited resources. To better prepare school psychologists to support urban learners, efforts to understand their training needs must be prioritized. Still, the views …

Service-Learning In Catholic Higher Education And Alternative Approaches Facing The Covid-19 Pandemic, Qianhui Tian, Thomas Noel Jr.
COVID-19 and Catholic Schools
Drawing on a review of the literature on service-learning in Catholic higher education and the development of online service-learning, as well as an empirical case study of 2020 Vincentian Service Day at DePaul University, this article examines an alternative way to develop service-learning in Catholic schools in response to the reality and needs of the world in front of us. Service-learning is widely practiced in higher education institutions and plays an essential role in Catholic schools as it integrates students’ faith, morals, and spiritual growth with social justice commitments. School closures due to COVID-19 significantly impede service-learning. However, a successful …

Motivational Factors Leading To Exceptional Student Education As A Career Choice, Annissa Brockington
Motivational Factors Leading To Exceptional Student Education As A Career Choice, Annissa Brockington
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
Districts nationwide continue to face the challenge of recruiting and retaining quality teachers for the classroom. The teacher shortage issue is bleaker when seeking teachers to fill some of the most critical subject areas needed such as math, science, and exceptional student education. The purpose of this study was to understand the motivational factors that contribute to an ESE teacher’s decision to remain in the teaching field. Over 600 ESE teachers were surveyed and asked to rate their satisfaction level over a range of multiple factors, and 247 teachers responded to the survey. Using quantitative methodology, a one-sample t test …
Homelessness And Hospitality On The Ground, A Methodological Proposal For Catholic Social Teaching, Daniel Pilario
Homelessness And Hospitality On The Ground, A Methodological Proposal For Catholic Social Teaching, Daniel Pilario
Journal of Vincentian Social Action
What resources, perspectives and experiences can we draw from formal Catholic Social Teaching and broader Catholic social thought to help us understand and interpret street homelessness in a global context? This article is intended to be an invitation to share narratives of hospitality on the ground vis-à-vis the problem of homelessness in the global world. Unlike top-down approaches, there are no clear principles to be applied; only concrete stories with all their frictions, ambiguities and difficulties hoping that God’s inspiration can reveal itself on the rough grounds where people walk in fidelity to the Gospel.
Collaborative Research For Justice And Multi-Issue Movement Building: Challenging Discriminatory Policing, School Closures, And Youth Unemployment, Ronald David Glass, Brett G. Stoudt
Collaborative Research For Justice And Multi-Issue Movement Building: Challenging Discriminatory Policing, School Closures, And Youth Unemployment, Ronald David Glass, Brett G. Stoudt
Publications and Research
This special issue engages ethical, epistemic, political, and institutional issues in projects of collaborative research for justice that were designed with movements contesting policing, school closures, and youth disinvestment and unemployment. Three of the articles were collaboratively written by activists and scholars who drew from movements that deployed research for community-driven progressive change. The movements and the research are thus situated at the intersection of struggles against a resurgent anti-immigrant white supremacy, gentrification, a punitive carceral state, low pay and lack of meaningful employment opportunities, and the privatization of the public sector. These articles build upon and are in conversation …

Prestige-Seeking Across Urban-Serving Research Universities, Desiree Zerquera
Prestige-Seeking Across Urban-Serving Research Universities, Desiree Zerquera
International Journal of Leadership and Change
This manuscript seeks to better understand the extent to which urban universities have pursued prestige over time. I situate the institution-level decisions made by campus leaders over time and within the higher education context to better understand how these efforts collectively reflect broader forces within the higher education environment towards prestige that aligns with standards of excellence misaligned with the equity-serving mission of urban-serving universities. Findings demonstrate widespread engagement in prestige seeking among urban universities, with greater engagement in areas of enhancing research revenue, graduate enrollment and completions, and enhancing incoming student SAT scores. Implications for administrators at these institutions …
University Studies Leadership: Vision And Challenge, Maurice Hamington, Judith A. Ramaley
University Studies Leadership: Vision And Challenge, Maurice Hamington, Judith A. Ramaley
University Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Although University Studies at Portland State University often receives attention for its signature curricular structure of year-long thematic mentored Freshman Inquiry, thematic mentored Sophomore Inquiry, thematic departmental Cluster courses, and community-based Capstone courses, it is the underlying pedagogical values and philosophy that represent the real revolution in higher education—a revolution that is ongoing at Portland State. Few large state universities can claim to offer a quarter-century of experience with general education change of this magnitude. This article addresses how a shared purpose evolved over the course of University Studies' history and was impacted by what various leaders emphasized during their …

Sparked by the 50th anniversary of the founding of the University of Massachusetts Boston in June 1964, University Archives and Special Collections (UASC) staff in the Joseph P. Healey Library collaborated with departments across campus to carry out a wide range of initiatives, all focused on locating, accessioning, preserving, and sharing the physical evidence of the university’s history. This poster outlines the various collecting activities, outreach methods, digitization projects, and dogged detective work that resulted in the addition of more than 2,500 linear feet of unique historic materials to the University Archives, as well as a number of well-received public …

An Evaluation Of Wayne State University's Educational Evaluation And Research Program, Willie L. White Ii
Wayne State University Dissertations
This is a mixed-methods evaluation of the Educational Evaluation and Research program at Wayne State University. The process of evaluation involved determining the efficacy of triangulating qualitative and quantitative methods of evaluation in order to access the EER program's goal acquisition. The process of evaluation commenced with a qualitative method of interviewing faculty members and was triangulated quantitatively with a likert scale survey that was modified from Wayne State University's Student Evaluation of Teaching Survey (SETS). The Student Evaluation of the Educational Evaluation and Research Program (SEEERP) was designed to measure graduate students' perspectives of EER goals and objectives acquisition. …
Grounding Student Affairs In A Catholic Charism: The Journey Of One Faculty Member In Connecting Curriculum With Mission, Rich Whitney Phd, Mark Laboe
Grounding Student Affairs In A Catholic Charism: The Journey Of One Faculty Member In Connecting Curriculum With Mission, Rich Whitney Phd, Mark Laboe
Journal of Catholic Education
The institutional mission of a university guides interactions among faculty, staff, students, and others and is instrumental in shaping the campus culture. As such, it is important that all members of a campus community not only understand the mission, but also have a sense of agency in determining how to live the mission through their work. This article presents a case study of one faculty member’s journey to deeper mission understanding, identification, and agency. The article explores commonalities between Vincentian Personalism and the basic tenets of the field of Student Affairs and highlights experiences and formation needed by lay faculty …

Undocumented Students In Christian Higher Education: Theological And Legal Ramifications For Financing Student Leaders, Nathanael P. Austin, Maddie Deegan, Leah N. Fulton, Keartsten Karrick
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
Private institutions in the United States of America are being forced to confront an increasing number of undocumented persons who seek employment, education, healthcare, and personal development. In this case study we considered the options which Christian colleges must weigh when interested in allowing undocumented students to serve in (traditionally) paid leadership roles on campus. Through research, interviews with student development professionals, and conversations with formerly undocumented students, this study provides a unique solution for Christian colleges to consider when faced with the consideration of undocumented students in leadership roles. The scope of our research is focused in three primary …
Boundary Spanner Role Conflict In Public Urban Universities, Joseph Gauntner
Boundary Spanner Role Conflict In Public Urban Universities, Joseph Gauntner
ETD Archive
Universities are increasingly seeking partnerships with external organizations for student learning and inter-organizational access to resources (Austin, 2010 Sandmann, 2006). The focus of such partnerships includes employee training, business development, affordable housing, community schools, community health centers, and other projects of reciprocal value to both the universities and community partners. Such work is frequently labeled university-community engagement (Carnegie Foundation, 2007). University staff members who build and sustain partnerships between their institutions and the broader community are referred to as boundary spanners (AASCU, 2004). Working as agents of the institution, a boundary spanner must be capable of working both sides of …
