Reflections On Being A Historian And Teaching History In The Midst Of Historic Times, Bonnie Laughlin-Schultz Mar 2021

Reflections On Being A Historian And Teaching History In The Midst Of Historic Times, Bonnie Laughlin-Schultz

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

As a historian and coordinator of a secondary social studies licensure program, I have spent the last few months working with teachers and others to gather documentary evidence about the experience of COVID-19 in my state. I felt compelled to gather documents as a historian. Collecting written and digital materials made me think (and talk with teachers and their students) about the nature of historical documentary evidence, past and present. The sources that document a community’s experience of this global pandemic are diverse: video of a birthday parade, a photo of a yard sign recognizing that a high school graduate, …

Developing Community-Based Learning In An Action Model Framework: Faculty Reflect On Their Development As Teachers And Scholars, Kathleen M. Cain, Amy Dailey, Kim Davidson, Gretchen Natter, Megan Adamson Sijapati, Divonna M. Stebick

Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Faculty reflect on their participation in a Community-Based Learning (CBL) Fellowship designed to create a community of teachers and scholars immersed in an integrated model of academic-community engagement at a small liberal arts college. The program created a space to grapple with CBL principles together, provided accountability and encouragement, and became a source of support through isolation and tensions. Traditional philosophies of teaching and scholarship were challenged and faculty embraced their roles as partners in advancing social justice.

An Autoethnographic Study Of Online Class Size And Instructor Participation In Discussions, Danielle M. Philipson Mar 2021

An Autoethnographic Study Of Online Class Size And Instructor Participation In Discussions, Danielle M. Philipson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research provided a detailed description of the researcher’s experience as an online instructor who faced increasing demands while trying to maintain instructional effectiveness. This account provided online program directors who sought to balance instructor satisfaction, accreditation standards, and financial pressures with insight into the impact of class size choices on instructor behavior in the online classroom. A qualitative autoethnographic method was used to understand the nature of the connection between class size and instructor use of instructional posts and to identify factors that influence the way instructors participate in online discussions. The autoethnographic genre of qualitative research allowed the …

Konstruksi Religiositas Tubuh Dalam Puisi Indonesia, Tengsoe Tjahjono, Made Oktavia Vidiyanti

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

The body is an integral part of being human. It is physical as well as spiritual, not only natural but also supernatural. In this regards, proper treatment of the body may indicate the level of one’s religiosity. The purpose of this study was to find the religiosity of the human body in poems written by Indonesian poets. Adopting Küçükcan’s (2005) religiosity dimension framework, we examine the body's religiosity from the following dimensions: belief, practice, and spirituality. Our data were a collection of language units in lines and stanzas taken from poems written by Mashuri and Alek Subairi. They were analyzed …

Reimagining Post-Secondary Training, Community College, And Welfare Supports, Aaron Azerad

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This paper seeks to study the income patterns at the sub-bachelorette level through community colleges and workforce training programs. Using 2018 U.S. Census PUMA microdata, this thesis not only explores which fields of study, industries, and occupations have a sufficient number of observations to determine whether they provide incomes which are commensurate with a middle class livelihood but, also whether these jobs are plentiful in number.

The second goal is to evaluate the effects of the 1996 Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (the Clinton era welfare reform) and how it has influenced Giuliani era ‘work requirement’ initiatives tied …

Defending The Humanities: Making A Case For Eighteenth-Century Studies, Katherine Gustafson, Heather King, Scott R. St. Louis, Linda Zionkowski Jan 2021

Defending The Humanities: Making A Case For Eighteenth-Century Studies, Katherine Gustafson, Heather King, Scott R. St. Louis, Linda Zionkowski

Peer Reviewed Articles

While the percentage of humanities majors has long been on the decline, the more recent experiences of the Great Recession, its aftermath, and the outbreak of Covid-19 have introduced a variety of daunting and intertwined challenges to scholars in these disciplines. Financial and occupational anxieties surrounding higher education threaten not only to crowd out humanities departments but also to alter the very understanding of what higher education is. While some students attend college to prepare themselves for engaged citizenship or to learn in a community, many also attend as a pathway to employment and expect a prompt return on investment. …
