Making Ai Interesting And Safe For K-6 Students, Anshi Moreno Jimenez, Fred Klein, Mason Dong, Kunal Jain, Jasmine Gu, Yuanheng Mao

Paul English Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) Institute Publications

This group project explores strategies for making artificial intelligence engaging, educational, and safe for K-6 students. The project addresses concerns associated with irresponsible AI use, including risks to children, unnecessary use of natural resources and computing power, and the development of unproductive AI habits. It presents classroom activities designed to help young students understand AI as a technology rather than simply a toy. One activity uses AI-generated images to encourage creativity, clear communication, critical analysis, collaboration, and reflection on the computational costs and limitations of generative AI. A second activity, “AI Detective,” teaches students to critically evaluate AI-generated responses for …

Confidenceai: A Wearable And Predictive Ai Ecosystem, Denzil Paul, Xuejun Kong, Raymond Wang, Flora Fleith Lopes, Zhengjia Yang, Brain Chu, Weijian Wang, Leo Chen

Paul English Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) Institute Publications

This group project presents ConfidenceAI, a conceptual wearable and predictive artificial intelligence ecosystem designed to help teenagers build confidence and manage stress in high-pressure situations such as classroom participation and public speaking. The system combines wrist-based biosensing with a personalized machine-learning model that uses physiological signals, including heart rate and heart rate variability, electrodermal activity, skin temperature, and movement, to learn an individual's baseline patterns and anticipate heightened stress responses. Rather than relying on universal thresholds, ConfidenceAI is designed to personalize the timing, method, and delivery of interventions based on each user's physiological patterns and prior responses. The proposed ecosystem …

Examining The Relationship Between Trauma-Informed Safety Drill Practices And School-Level Chronic Absenteeism In Maine Secondary Schools, Tina Nightingale

Dissertations

School safety practices can influence students' perceptions of safety, emotional well-being, and engagement in the educational environment; however, limited research has examined whether trauma-informed safety drill practices are associated with measurable educational outcomes. The purpose of this quantitative, non-experimental, correlational study was to examine the relationship between trauma-informed safety drill practices and school-level chronic absenteeism in Maine middle and high schools. Guided by trauma-informed care, adolescent neurodevelopment, and Protection Motivation Theory, the study investigated whether higher levels of trauma-informed implementation of safety drills, as measured by the Trauma-Informed Safety Drill Practices Index (TISDPI), were associated with lower rates of chronic …

Centering Culture, Language, And Identity In A History Of Mathematics Course For Preservice Teachers, Luis Miguel Fernández, Tenchita Alzaga Elizondo

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

This article presents the redesign of an undergraduate History of Mathematics course for preservice teachers at a Hispanic-Serving Institution. Grounded in Community- and Family-Centered Pedagogy (CFCP) and Marshall’s framework for culturally sustaining mathematics teaching, the course intentionally moved beyond Eurocentric narratives to center students’ linguistic, familial, and cultural resources as integral to mathematical meaning-making. Two core assignments anchored the redesign: (1) evolving Padlet reflections that connected global mathematical histories to students’ family and community practices, and (2) bilingual Cuentos Matemáticos that wove mathematical concepts with personal and cultural narratives in English and Spanish. Selected student reflections illustrate how these experiences …

Why Are Western Australian Girls Less Motivated Than Boys To Study Senior Secondary Higher-Level Mathematics Courses? Relationships Between Gender, Prior Achievement, And Mathematics Course Aspirations, Jane Kirkham, Elaine Chapman

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Secondary school students, and particularly girls, may avoid enrolling in higher-level mathematics courses despite having the competence to succeed in these courses. Understanding the reasons behind these choices is essential to addressing this concern. In this study, the teachers of Western Australian Year 10 students (n=886) nominated the mathematics course in which they believed each participating student could succeed in Year 11 with participants grouped into four achievement cohorts on this basis. Then each teacher course nomination was compared to participants’ own course selection with participants classified as either aspiring below or at/above their judged potential achievement level. We then …

Professional Dispositions In Coaching Education: Icf-Credentialed Coaches’ Perspectives On Development And Assessment, Michelle Renee Thompson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative phenomenological study examined how professional dispositions were defined, experienced, and assessed in coaching education within the rapidly expanding field of professional coaching. The problem addressed was the lack of a clear understanding of professional dispositions in coaching and the absence of a systematic dispositional assessment comparable to that in counselor education. The researcher’s purpose was to explore how credentialed professional-level coaches defined and identified professional dispositions for effective coaching engagements and how these dispositions aligned with constructs in other helping professions. The researcher collected data through semistructured videoconference interviews. Purposeful and snowball sampling yielded 16 U.S.-based coaches who …

Regional Homeschool Children’S Experience With Arts-Based Digital Literacy Workshops, Kimberly Maslin, Karen Murcia, Jane Mulcock

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The number of children engaged in homeschool education is increasing, particularly in regional areas of Australia. Homeschool families currently access community-based activities such as theatre productions and sports programs, as well as public library services, to enrich their children’s learning. However, access to quality programs that support digital literacy skills remains limited and the benefits of these programs to home schoolers remain largely unexplored. This study examined the experiences of homeschool families with children aged 6–12 who participated in a series of stop-motion animation workshops held in a regional Western Australian public library. Data were collected from both participating parents …
